Game 104: Throwback Day! 415

On July 27, 1969, the top of the Billboard Hot 100 featured:

1. “In the Year 2525”, Zager & Evans
2. “Crystal Blue Persuasion”, Tommy James and the Shondells
3. “Spinning Wheel”, Blood, Sweat & Tears
4. “My Cherie Amour”, Stevie Wonder
5. “What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)”, Jr. Walker & The All Stars

And the A’s beat the Washington Senators 7-2 before 13,779 at the Coliseum in a game that took 1 hour, 57 minutes.

Jose Tartabull LF, Ted Kubiak SS, Reggie Jackson RF, Sal Bando 3B, Danny Cater 1B, Rick Monday CF, Dick Green 2B, Phil Roof C, Lew Krausse P.

The uniform look is one of my least favorite in Oakland history. I didn’t care for the pullovers with OAKLAND in BLOCK letters they wore for a few years in the 80s. Listening to the radio pregame show, Bob Melvin seems lukewarm on the look too. Today these guys wear those unis.

Crisp CF, Lowrie SS, Donaldson 3B, Moss 1B, Cespedes DH, Reddick RF, Young LF, Vogt C, Sogard 2B. Milone P. Seth Smith is on the bench against RHP Garrett Richards.

Thom Brennaman and Eric Byrnes call the game for Fox; it will be shown on the West Coast and in most of Texas.

    Next time anyone complains about modern popular music and the kids these days, I am going to point out to them that “In the Year 2525” went #1. That song is the absolute worst.

        I never see the appeal of putting a good starter in the bull pen to bring them back earlier. or be less stressful.

        Exactly. Unless they have some strategy to stretch him in the bullpen during August so hes starting in Sept.

        The A’s already have 3 very good relievers taking all the high leverage innings so taking Harden and putting him in the Jerry Blevins role is just a waste of value until he inevitably gets injured again.

        I also find the media to be generally far too concerned with relief pitching.

        • Glorious Mundy Jul 27,2013 12:06 pm || Up

          Brett Anderson became Rich Harden so gradually that I barely noticed.

      Arte must have insisted they wear “LA” on the caps, which is historically wrong. I think the caps should have an interlocking “CA”.

    I think these uniforms are beautiful myself. Think of what they must have looked like in the context of the times, oh myyyyyy. They might have looked outrageous but they inspired a whole seismic shift in what was permissible in ballfield attire, undeniable.

    The halos on the Angels’ hats, did the old “CA” caps really have that? It looks drawn on. They should have gone with the CA and not the revisionist “LA” they are using.

    Other than that this is a big game where if you win you ensure the Slegs leave town at least 11 back and their season is really circling the drain. Lets get 6 more outs, boys!!!! It’s REALLY hard not to love this team and believe that it can shoot the shot in October.

        On the subject, what are people’s views on review sites like yelp? On the one hand most internet reviews aren’t worth the electrons they’re written with, but on the other hand I’ve had a couple of shocking hotel experiences recently (stolen property, inflated bills, etc) and it seems like one way to take a stand.

          I almost always use yelp or tripadvisor before booking, but I read the review carefully for signs that the writer is a nitwit, a shill, a dopey college kid, or a grudge holder. A review like yours would carry a lot of weight for me.

          A lot of reputable establishments will respond to negative reviews on yelp these days, so that alone makes it worth a try.

          Yelp / Trip Advisor are usually my starting places, just be careful not to sound like the whiny “the doctor’s office has shitty decor, he seemed knowledgeable, 2 stars” idiots.

          I think yelp is great, but it needs a critical mass of reviews before it becomes reliable. So yelp in major cities = good, but yelp out in the middle of nowhere is generally useless.

              There is some combination of average rating and number of times that it has been rated that can be pretty reliable.

            Even at 10 y.o. I had enough sartorial taste to hate those. I think 1969 was the only year they wore the all-gold frequently. In 1970 and 1971 they still had the vest style but mostly went with white at home and I think gray on the road (we still had B&W TV so can’t swear to that), with the golds being used mainly for the second game of a doubleheader. The white and gray vest style still reminded me too much of a farmer’s overalls though. In 1972 the vests were chucked and the softball-style pullovers arrived; that was a huge improvement.

      I love them, but once a year or so is about right.

    LLama sister and I sat in the ptbnl seats today. They were fantastic! I kept dodging non-existent foul balls as they were caught by the screens. Milone did not seem impressive from our vantage point. Donaldson’s defense, on the other hand was sublime from up close. Reddick is really tall. Norris’s homer looked like a rocket off the bat but didn’t have anywhere near the height to go out…or so we thought. But it got out before it could get down. Coco is really fast.

      I saw a group of 8-10 year old boys today walking slowly up the horseshoe road by the oracle, there chaperone/ handler was getting annoyed at the pace and gave them a hearty hurry it up.
      Most responded eventually, but 10 paces back was the lone kid in Giants gear proclaiming something, at first I couldn’t hear, but as he came closer he just kept repeating “World Champions” smugly.

            This appears to be that AB with the first two pitches prior to the ejection:

            I don’t know what Cabrera said to warrant the ejection, but I can only assume there was a magic word or two. The pitches themselves…I don’t know what the problem was with them. On the video they seemed decent, and this supports that.

            • dmoas Jul 29,2013 8:13 am || Up

                It finished with Tuiasosopo taking two pitches for balls then a called strike three. I don’t think there’s a differentiation on the site that separates the pitches to Cabrera and Tuiasosopo.

    I am pretty ambivalent about Peavy. On the one hand, he could well be the missing piece, or a replacement for a missing or suspended starter.

    On the other hand, he may just be not much better than the starters they have, at a very high price.

      The price is certainly a factor, but he would likely be an upgrade over any A’s starter outside of Colon and possibly Anderson.

      • brian.only Jul 28,2013 12:06 pm || Up

        IDK, I think we should go for it, I think we are paying league min to all of our starters aside from a $2M Colon.
        Now that we are actually in contention I think it warrants spending, our ownership does has money, it’s just not going into the team for whatever reason.

        Peavy has been pretty damn good this year- 23% K/ 5% BB, 69.1 FStr, xFIP a full run below ERA.
        LOB% and Babip are both slightly under league avg, throw in the Coliseum’s great ‘track’s of land’ and I think he could be a very valuable asset.

        Only downside is the 13.1 HR/FB, but its an outlier, career is 9.7 (10.1 in 10′, 7.6 in 11′, 9.7 in 12′) and again the Coli should help.

        • mother pucker Jul 28,2013 12:38 pm || Up

          I tend to agree. My biggest concern would be that last year his fly-ball percentage increased considerably, the yet the home-run rate did not. This year his fly-ball percentage increased again (though not as much), and the homers rate has really gone up. I do not know if this season’s home-run % is “average” given his fly-ball% or if he is getting a tad unlucky. Beyond that though, nothing in his stats indicates a big drop from the 4 WAR pitcher of yester-year.

    Over his last two starts, Chris Sale pitched 17 innings, allowed 3 runs, struck out 18, walked 4 and has an 0:2 record. In seven of his 19 starts this season, White Sox have scored one or fewer runs.

    Beltre may have broken himself.

        They were running to catch a fly ball in LF foul territory, Andrus ducked and tumbled to get out of the way, but Beltre stepped on his midsection anyway and then landed on his ass very hard dropping the ball as he rolled over violently. Beltre was down for a bit but they both seem to be fine.

          Amazing. Will look for it in the replays.

    Phillies are well on their way to losing their 8th in a row…give us Utley already.

      On a side note, I am all-in on the “acquire Morse” bandwagon.

        He would be an interesting August waiver wire pickup. I like him better than Freiman.

          Is he still a Mariner?

          Probably blocked by the time the A’s can put the claim, right?

            Maybe but he has a lot of salary left. The Rangers might do it but hopefully they’re so far out of it by then that they won’t.

              If the Rangers are out perhaps, but it is ~$2MM, that shouldn’t be a factor for them if they are in it.

                You’re right. I was mistakenly under the impression that he was making a lot more than he actually is.

        FWIW, Rollins is saying he wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause

    Before the complaint pops up (the A’s equipment manager) explained during the pregame that he tried to get batting helmets, but when MLB changed to the new helmets right before the season. He was told there wasn’t enough time to get throwbacks helmets even though he requested it 6 months ago.

    Programming note: Fox does its second straight Saturday game from the Coliseum this week, Rangers vs. A’s. Buck and McCarver are coming to an A’s home game for the first time since the 2000 ALCS ALDS and are doing any A’s game for the first time since 2006 (@NYY).
