On July 27, 1969, the top of the Billboard Hot 100 featured:
1. “In the Year 2525”, Zager & Evans
2. “Crystal Blue Persuasion”, Tommy James and the Shondells
3. “Spinning Wheel”, Blood, Sweat & Tears
4. “My Cherie Amour”, Stevie Wonder
5. “What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)”, Jr. Walker & The All Stars
And the A’s beat the Washington Senators 7-2 before 13,779 at the Coliseum in a game that took 1 hour, 57 minutes.
Jose Tartabull LF, Ted Kubiak SS, Reggie Jackson RF, Sal Bando 3B, Danny Cater 1B, Rick Monday CF, Dick Green 2B, Phil Roof C, Lew Krausse P.
The uniform look is one of my least favorite in Oakland history. I didn’t care for the pullovers with OAKLAND in BLOCK letters they wore for a few years in the 80s. Listening to the radio pregame show, Bob Melvin seems lukewarm on the look too. Today these guys wear those unis.
Crisp CF, Lowrie SS, Donaldson 3B, Moss 1B, Cespedes DH, Reddick RF, Young LF, Vogt C, Sogard 2B. Milone P. Seth Smith is on the bench against RHP Garrett Richards.
Thom Brennaman and Eric Byrnes call the game for Fox; it will be shown on the West Coast and in most of Texas.
Next time anyone complains about modern popular music and the kids these days, I am going to point out to them that “In the Year 2525” went #1. That song is the absolute worst.
No no no no no no no
Yeah, I can see the appeal of the idea, but I really want him starting games in September and October.
I never see the appeal of putting a good starter in the bull pen to bring them back earlier. or be less stressful.
Exactly. Unless they have some strategy to stretch him in the bullpen during August so hes starting in Sept.
The A’s already have 3 very good relievers taking all the high leverage innings so taking Harden and putting him in the Jerry Blevins role is just a waste of value until he inevitably gets injured again.
I also find the media to be generally far too concerned with relief pitching.
Brett Anderson became Rich Harden so gradually that I barely noticed.
and why do professional media (including our broadcast team) think the starting pitching is so good?
too old
Byrnes needs to fire his hair stylist.
I have never known what to think about the slegnA caps with the halo on the top. I think it is awful, but I also friggin love it.
Arte must have insisted they wear “LA” on the caps, which is historically wrong. I think the caps should have an interlocking “CA”.
By 69 you have to be right. That means I now hate these as a tribute to $$$rather than a fun look back in time.
That’s what I thought too!
Looks like seagull poop.
Humbly disagree about the uniforms. Two thumbs up.
The vests are a little too loose.
Showing off the colors is always good.
I mean, just for the socks alone.
They’re great.
Big time. Head to toe this ensemble is exquisite.
Looks like DFA has hacked FSU’s account.
Nope. All the words are spelled correctly.
ascd
I like them
i love it.
helmets arev distracting
With you 100%. I remember this cover when I was a kid, and though I was in Minnesota and a Twins fan this look was just so badass I couldn’t help but love the A’s. Whenever they came to play in MN I had to go see them, and definitely loved seeing Vida pitch. Loved the look today.
Me too. Awesome.
Cheaping out on the batting helmets on throwback day is so lame.
Yeah, the hideous lime (oops, sorry batgirl, “Kelly”) green helmets are an essential part of this uniform.
kelly is go!
So depressed I had to work a trade show today and miss these glorious unis. Must catch highlights!
I missed Cowgill becoming a Slegna!
Wow, those unis are even more hideous than I thought from the pictures. It’s like what clown inmates wear would wear in clown prison.
That’s a clown simile, bro.
Hated wearing the vest style in high school. Still hate it now.
The Joker wore a dress shirt and some nice slacks in that softball game, but I guess that was normal prison.
“The devil, he’s sprung himself!”
What’s the deal with the giant mlb logo on the vests? Was that on the originals?
Yes. 1969 was the 100th anniversary of professional baseball so all teams wore that.
Godawful pitch
wow
In a manger?
A man, a plan, a canal, Puerto Rico
I expect Thom Brennaman to make dumb mistakes about the A’s, but he said Mariano Rivera was born in Puerto Rico. Ummm, no.
He is so bad. His is the only voice I’ve ever wanted to punch.
I also just learned that the Angels win more games when Hamilton hits well than when he hits terribly.
Didn’t see that coming, did you.
Also, when Weaver gets a W
All right, c’mon, let’s throttle Garrett.
Groundhog Day for Yoenis Cespedes.
Yo just wants the A’s to be able to afford him in 3 years.
Gotta love Byrnes logic. It’s a good thing that Reddick’s batting line sucks because law of averages.
I wanted to go to today’s game to get pictures of these uniforms but I’m working instead.
Milone must not have wanted Anderson on the mic very long.
Anderson has been prone to some foot in mouth disease so I was glad that didn’t last long.
Yeah, “showcasing his humor/sarcasm” is precisely what I was afraid of.
Asking fans to wave a finger in anticipation of Fox Sports 1 seems dangerous.
Chris Archer posted a Maddux today against the Yankees.
Would not want to face the Rays in the playoffs.
they have had a soft schedule lately, but yeah
Billy Beane in Lew’s seat.
National broadcast. Maybe Billy’s showcasing himself for trade offers.
heh
Obviously all pitchers could benefit from a catcher who’s good at pitch framing but someone like Milone seems especially prone to this.
Shut. The. Fuck. Up. Brennaman. You. Idiot.
As you were posting that I was fleeing into the arms of Vince and Ray.
Compared to Thom Brennaman, Eric Byrnes starts to seem like a deep thinker.
Imagine what Brennaman’s base-running would look like
Nice grab by CY25. Now need to see something from 52YC.
(hat tip to lil Miss Aces for noticing what was in front of my face all season…)
Whoa!
asvd lil Miss Aces
The student has become the master.
This.
she just blew my mind!
good on her
That was me last night. We were crossing the bridge and she said look dad, its a 52YC shirt. I had to have her tell me twice, then gave her the “mind blown” expression and a big smile.
So Country Joe is there and sung the national anthem today? If Neil Diamond could sing at the All-Star Game, maybe Oakland’s response could be Country Joe leading the Cheer.
Come on, all you big strong men!
“Gimme an F! Gimme a U! Gimme a U! Gimme another U! …”
And now, for a lecture on “playing the game the right way” by the esteemed Eric Byrnes.
ALWAYS GO BACK ON THE BALL FIRST! then dive for the pop up
Yes Byrnes. ..run out ground balls. OBTW Touch home plate too ASSHOLE.
FUCK YOU ERIC BYRNES
Sample size of approx 4: the announcers’ spoken count has not yet matched the on-screen count while I’ve been paying attention.
Angel Hernandez would have called it a strike
Would’ve been nice if Cupcakes made this start.
Hey, Lew Wolff showed up and is sitting in someone else’s seat. Kick him out!
He’s just upgrading.
Good job, Tommy.
RIP, JJ Cale. Obit.
bummer
Cool, 4 innings against the slegna pen.
yup
Hackfest.
stop.swinging.at.high.fastballs.
Ugh…see the ball, miss the ball.
I wonder if he’s seeing the ball. Maybe he needs glasses and is too proud to get his eyes checked?
I was wondering the same thing.
cosa salvaje, haces que mi corazón canta…
Cespedes, A mi no me gusta.
Randomly, by my best estimate I’ve been in 46 of the 58 counties in California.
(calls PBS programming executive.)
(pitches “California’s New Gold with James Venes”)
Heh.
There are a few around the Sierras and out along the SE part of the state I’ve yet to roam.
Not being able to hit fastballs down the middle is a much bigger problem than swinging at bad pitches.
How to get Eric Byrnes to shut up about PEDs? Just have Josh Donaldson make a couple nice plays.
How do we get him to shut up about everything else?
Muzzle/mute/cut out tongue.
Put a miniature home plate by the mic…he’ll never get there.
Win
Ugggggggh wtf was the point of that?
I hate CY25 so much.
I now just feel bad. I hate him and I dont like that I do…
Terrible.
To make up for that terrible bunt, watch Young try to steal 2B and get thrown out next.
4 balls in a row? BUNT THE FIRST PITCH.
Unreal.
DINO!
Holy shit.
Meh. He should have bunted
Mullet power.
Either the Fox graphics guy is drunk, or Keebs just struck out on an 0-1 pitch.
Vokuhila!
(Vorne kurz, hinten lang [short in front, long in the back] – what they call Noriss’ haircut around here)
Geschäft in der Front, Partei in den Rücken
Literally soda out the nose…omg.
And that’s 4 games in a row with a homer by a catcher.
I love our catching cadre.
I have always thought Byrnes sounds so unnecessarily bitter when discussing his playing career.
The shot of Coco racing around third to score gave me a great Campy Campaneris flashback.
I think these uniforms are beautiful myself. Think of what they must have looked like in the context of the times, oh myyyyyy. They might have looked outrageous but they inspired a whole seismic shift in what was permissible in ballfield attire, undeniable.
The halos on the Angels’ hats, did the old “CA” caps really have that? It looks drawn on. They should have gone with the CA and not the revisionist “LA” they are using.
Other than that this is a big game where if you win you ensure the Slegs leave town at least 11 back and their season is really circling the drain. Lets get 6 more outs, boys!!!! It’s REALLY hard not to love this team and believe that it can shoot the shot in October.
I think they are awesome as well.
The revisionist LA on the caps says it all about the Slegna – LAME.
they were LA befor CA. but not at the time.
Apart from the halos, those are much better looking than their current gear. Slightly knocked off from the Red Sox though.
Those halos were godawful. Not a good look at all.
I like the lowercase ’71-’72 kit myself…
although the 1970 uniform set had the blue and red striped stirrups, which went better with the blue undershirt than the full clash of the red ones.
1966-1970 California Angels cap
They are primo, Dial C was wondering if one could purchase socks like that, I’m curious as well.
i want them on my feet
Whole collection here, though the kelly green ones haven’t been in stock for at least a year.
Oooooooh, awesome, thx!
Good stuff! Thanks for the link!
Where did that miss?
Bad framing again.
We may need a shortstop.
Lowrie is just not a good defensive shortstop.
That should be an error.
I want Rollins included in the cliff lee deal.
This, we can throw in Andy Parrino.
OK – I’ve got to go and argue the hotel bill which suddenly jumped from £125 per night when I booked it to £200 a night now. When I get back this had better be a W.
Nice. Where are you?
Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire, for my older sister’s wedding.
On to Trieste tomorrow for a week’s lecture series, while the rest of the family returns via New York.
Ah, Trieste. Where one used to go to buy jeans…
On the subject, what are people’s views on review sites like yelp? On the one hand most internet reviews aren’t worth the electrons they’re written with, but on the other hand I’ve had a couple of shocking hotel experiences recently (stolen property, inflated bills, etc) and it seems like one way to take a stand.
A story like yours, articulately written, would resonate, because it would stand apart from the “OMG cockroaches and dried semen on the sheets!” garbage.
I almost always use yelp or tripadvisor before booking, but I read the review carefully for signs that the writer is a nitwit, a shill, a dopey college kid, or a grudge holder. A review like yours would carry a lot of weight for me.
A lot of reputable establishments will respond to negative reviews on yelp these days, so that alone makes it worth a try.
Yelp / Trip Advisor are usually my starting places, just be careful not to sound like the whiny “the doctor’s office has shitty decor, he seemed knowledgeable, 2 stars” idiots.
Or “What kind of a restaurant is closed on Wednesdays!?!?” 1 star.
I think yelp is great, but it needs a critical mass of reviews before it becomes reliable. So yelp in major cities = good, but yelp out in the middle of nowhere is generally useless.
It does take some scrutiny to sift through some BS but I think in general it’s a good enough resource.
There is some combination of average rating and number of times that it has been rated that can be pretty reliable.
I usually check number of ratings, the breakdown of each level, and look for any consistency from one rating to the next.
except they sell businesses the option of burring less favorable reviews.
My best information is that that is a false rumor. I’d be interested in seeing proof.
I dunno. I can’t provide proof but I’ve heard too many stories to think it’s made up.
The girlfriend works in SEO sales and deals with them all the time. Says the algorithm for showing Yelp advertisers and non advertisers reviews is different.
I like Yelp for lots of things, despite my utter distrust/dislike of any individual Yelp review. You do need to reach a large enough sample of reviews to determine if they are signal or noise though.
There were no washcloths.
£ some heads.
£cake
If CY didn’t make that play, I would’ve advocated for an outright release.
Helloooooo Cucpcakes!
I think he needs to put the 30 pounds back on.
Cupcakes!
Yoenis, they brought in a batting practice pitcher. Let’s go!
The A’s just singlehandedly normalized Cupcakes’ HR/FB ratio.
LOL
Err
Your move, Tixiss.
Victory!
I hope the Rev is enjoying watching the Angels’ season end this weekend.
A’s win, Yankees lose. Orioles, Indians and Cubs, your turn
Shout out to Scioscia, by the way, for setting it up so that Weaver faces Texas instead of us this week. That means a lot, big guy.
fist bump scioscia
Nice win, and a much cleaner game than we’ve seen. The A’s look good in methodical.
An A’s win tomorrow would just about do it for the slegna season — and it’s July.
Those unis look just fine in the postgame celebration line, but please let me not see them again for 15 or 20 years.
Boo.
This.
boo
(of course, soaker was closer to actually living with them than the rest of us)
Even at 10 y.o. I had enough sartorial taste to hate those. I think 1969 was the only year they wore the all-gold frequently. In 1970 and 1971 they still had the vest style but mostly went with white at home and I think gray on the road (we still had B&W TV so can’t swear to that), with the golds being used mainly for the second game of a doubleheader. The white and gray vest style still reminded me too much of a farmer’s overalls though. In 1972 the vests were chucked and the softball-style pullovers arrived; that was a huge improvement.
I love them, but once a year or so is about right.
Fosse’s guest on pregame radio was Steve Vucinich, who said he was lobbying hard to get a vest jersey added as an full-season alternate one of these years.
Sorry, Vuce, but no thanks on permanent vests. That way lies Colorado Rockiedom.
They’re ugly, but I like them. Once a year or every few years is good. They’d need a lot of updates to make that work as a full time thing.
Rays have the best record in AL
I remember saying after we went there that they are the 1 team I dont want to see in Oct. Still true.
I don’t want to face either the Rays nor the Tigers in October. I don’t like how we match up with either of them.
I want to face the Astros. Can that happen?
CY225
Tigers would be harsh, 3rd times a charm though?
An A’s-Rays ALCS would still be all kinds of awesome though.
Price and Moore against our weaker lineup? Not quite as awesome.
Rays are my #2 AL team but I’d be ok w/ it.
If there’s any team I’d be okay with losing to it would be them.
I would not like losing to them. too many talking heads think they are the Anti A’s
Huh, never heard that, but I avoid SC/ SI/ ESPN mostly.
I suppose, not so much “anti-A’s” but pointing to their success as the way to run a franchise, ignoring the total suckages for the first 10 years
Ah, I gotcha.
IMHO, I feel it’s more that they have taken a few (poss. more) cues/ strategies from the A’s.
I think they are viewed as a less uppity version of the A’s, who rely on good ol’ fashioned scouting rather than nerdy nerd stuff. Plus they play on the East Coast and zomg they beat the Yankees and stuff.
Rays are plenty nerdy nerd.
But understand you’re talking about ‘perception’.
GM is more articulate than me, yes, what he said
They’ve also gained some attention from all the fightin and feudin with the Red Sox over the past few years, which of course is a mighty feather in their caps as far as I’m concerned.
Yup.
There isn’t any team I’d be okay with losing to.
They all must fall.
This.
And tomorrow, we finish them.
we have come to bury Slegna!
Well sure as hell not to praise them.
When was the last time the A’s lost a game to Texas in the standings? The Seattle series?
That’s right, it was Sunday, June 23.
I think it was actually June 27 when they had a day off. They went from tied to back half a game. Stayed that way until July 2 when they went back alone in first.
I meant a full game.
Another win, coming from behind, without much offense.
Not sure if serious.
As a 1994 Niners fan, I support this.
WOO!
Other comments I saw lead me to believe he was joking.
I kinda figured, but one can hope!!
Amazing fangraphs fact: Both the Astros pitchers and their hitters have been cumulatively below replacement level this season.
Pitchers: -0.1 WAR
Hitters: -0.4 WAR
(The hitters aren’t really that bad at hitting — it’s just that they have put up a -43.8 UZR.)
We are seriously talking about a AAA level team here.
And yet……..they swept a four game series in Anaheim.
Sure, but who hasn’t.
European soccer leagues’ system would be fun here. Marlins and Astros versus IL and PCL champion in a relegation round
Leadoff homers are such rally-killers.
And yet.
Rangers broadcast just noted that this is the farthest they have been out of first place since 2009.
Wow, huh.
Indians up 1-0 mid 3rd!
Yahoo, Wahoo!
Man, Giambi looks like a troll nowadays, heh.
It’s incredible how old he looks.
He just missed a monster shot by 15 ft.
I would so love to see him make the bigs in a year or two.
I only had to see him once in Sacramento to know that was as far as his bat would ever take him…
and I know he probably won’t make it with his arm either, but I wants me some Double Doolittle!
Not like he has anything to lose by trying this instead.
Wouldn’t that be awesome if in 2015 the A’s have 2 lefties who were both former position players? He might have to change is twitter handle though.
Read his recent tweets. ;-)
Har
Jeeeeeziz Beltre is freaking amazing.
But probably the biggest waste of flesh in baseball in the personality/ humility dept.
I don’t understand?
He’s a whiny narcissistic asshole w/ no sense of humor?
Are you sure you’re not thinking of C.J. Wilson?
Nope, he’s a dick too though.
Case in point, Asdrubal Cabrera steals third base w/out a throw, as Beltre is walking back to third he roughly pushes Cabrera back onto the base from behind. What the shit is that?
they are friends?
5 game lead yo.
most undeserved 5 game lead ever,
Hey! You complaining?
it gives me hope
5 games ahead!
clevland wins on a lead off HR.
5!!!
Bwahahahaha
Three 1-0 games in the AL today, plus a 2-0 one in the NL.
Six shutouts in MLB today, with another game 0-0 in the bottom of the 8th.
1-0 in the top of the ninth!
Pedro Strop vs. the Giants’ offense was quite the battle of suck, with the Giants eventually succumbing ignominiously.
francour leads off.
world champs everyone
Heh, we’ll always have Bacon Tuesday…
I’d love to see Francouer be the Matt Carson-esque hero of the RiverCats next year, with a cup of coffee or three in the Michael Taylor role.
Michael Taylor needs to be in the booth somewhere… He’s smooth.
Cubs’ll probably Cubs this though.
well….
I’d enjoy watching the Royals, except Rex Hudler.
Last year after 104 games:
Tex 61-43
Oak 56-48
This year after 104 games:
Oak 61-43
Tex 56-48
Mind. Blown.
we need an upgrade at pitcher and ss/2b
Didn’t Sabean come out recently and basically say anyone aside from the obvious candidates, is available for trade? I cannot see the Gi**ts looking to move him, but I wonder what it would cost to acquire Crawford?
Not that he’s worth the money, but I wonder if Scutaro is going to age like wine, cheese, and Omar Vizquel…
A “Marco clap clap Scutaro clap clap” redux would be kinda brilliant, plus we’d give the band-wagoners something familiar.
STEAL MORE FANS
went to a baseball themed bday party. ther was a girl (about 9) in a childs giants ross shirsey.
BEST.GIANT.EVER.
WTB Buster Posey. Offering any two players.
Mmm symmetry … yrtemmys mmM
it scares me
What we did last year won’t happen again for a long while, they don’t have enough Brandon’s.
i’m sure hicks is available
He’s playing 3B against the Rivercats right at this very moment, as it happens.
Oh, and Texas’s 103rd game last year was this one. LOLOLOLAngels.
The Baseball Prospectus playoff odds coming into today had the Tigers at 20% to win the World Series. That’s insane.
I don’t quite get it either…
Looking much better in the AL West though!
The Tigers… They’re mine. They shall not pass.
OK y’all, the Jays are coming, and per the terms of Rajai’s restraining order against me I have to leave town. I’ll catch back up when the Rangers come to town, as Ross Wolf’s restraining order has lapsed. Please obtain at least four wins, one great pitcher and one great hitter while I’m gone, KTHXBYE.
have fun
But there’s only three games while you are gone. Unless you count tomorrow. Also, did you ru n this vacation by me first? I don’t remember approving this.
LLama sister and I sat in the ptbnl seats today. They were fantastic! I kept dodging non-existent foul balls as they were caught by the screens. Milone did not seem impressive from our vantage point. Donaldson’s defense, on the other hand was sublime from up close. Reddick is really tall. Norris’s homer looked like a rocket off the bat but didn’t have anywhere near the height to go out…or so we thought. But it got out before it could get down. Coco is really fast.
Thanks ptbnl! Next year I’ll take two!
did you say hi to billy?
Just because there are nets doesn’t mean you’re safe.
Ooo. I forgot about the ptbnl seats for this ti me around.
Sadly not available during your trip.
Damn. Thanks, though.
I’d say part of me feels sorry for the Giants but that would be a blatant lie.
I saw a group of 8-10 year old boys today walking slowly up the horseshoe road by the oracle, there chaperone/ handler was getting annoyed at the pace and gave them a hearty hurry it up.
Most responded eventually, but 10 paces back was the lone kid in Giants gear proclaiming something, at first I couldn’t hear, but as he came closer he just kept repeating “World Champions” smugly.
Fittingly he was, 10 paces behind, and none of the other boys wanted anything to do w/ him.
lolGiants
Yesterday was great: Red Sox, Yankees, Giants, Rangers all lost.
Today wasn’t too shabby either.
A’s and Rays riding high!
That’s also four 1-0 games today in MLB.
Also: those throwbacks are even more glorious up close. Just gorgeous.
Best giveaway ever imo, love Coco lean, but I’ll get way more use out of the tee.
Most other runners up have some big ugly Cache Creek, Pepsi, Chevy, etc.. logo that ruins it for me.
I missed the throwback tee…was referring to the bright yellow unis.
Whoops, I was just looking at the giveaway…
Man, David Ortiz. Clearly a case of ‘roid rage.
Whoa. That was crazy.
Biggest crybaby in baseball, after Mike Scioscia.
Whoa, what a beast, Pedroia’s cower and ‘WTF face’ are pretty priceless.
Guy in blue at the end- not sure how anyone can calmly lean on the fence w/ that madness happening 3 ft away…
Watching the whole video, Pedroia is pretty pissed off and who can blame him.
What a jackass. If you’re out of the box the ball just needs to cross the plate for it to be a strike.
he is paying for that and getting misdemeanor vandalism charge too, right?
I would sure hope so.
What a fucking jerk.
All of that because he got a high strike called. On a 3:0 count. While stepping out of the box. With his team up 7:2 in the 7th inning.
Pay attention how he shows the ball was right at his forehead height. Napoing at its best.
Of course he doesn’t get suspended and hits a HR today.
Even if he did get suspended it wouldn’t have been today’s game.
I know. I just hate that kind of behavior, and feel pretty certain that he will not get reprimanded at all
Me too.
He pretended to smash the phone again after the HR. Just making violent behavior funny!
What an idiot
OH BIG PAPI YOU SO FUNNY
Here’s one place that doesn’t mind making it all into a big funny joke (and nice grammar fail on the shirt):
*YOU’RE
Now in this one, I say Fuck Fairchild
Wow.
Once more, an arrogant ump detracts from the game. The second pitch could’ve cleared the backstop and been called a strike.
That was a Hernandez call, bro.
They continue overplaying their hands and maybe we’ll finally get a technological solution. The umps can become the firemen on diesel trains.
I think both were legitimate calls and am perfectly fine with it. You don’t get to bitch about every call, where is the complaining about the arrogant player detracting from the game?
I’m with you on this one. They seemed to be good pitches, so Cabrera should have probably kept his mouth shut.
I don’t care who the player is – you don’t get to argue balls and strikes nonstop, swearing or not.
That’s also what Fairchild’s explanation was in his postgame comments – the arguing.
They look like balls to me — that said, I will defer to your expertise in pointless argumentation.
Do you disagree with the chart below? Did you take into account the camera angle?
You’re right! I should have deferred to your expertise in repetitive, pointless argumentation.
They were legitimate questions based on whether or not you still thought they were balls with Pitch f(x) data and angle considered or whether they initially looked like balls and you don’t care.
….
This appears to be that AB with the first two pitches prior to the ejection:
I don’t know what Cabrera said to warrant the ejection, but I can only assume there was a magic word or two. The pitches themselves…I don’t know what the problem was with them. On the video they seemed decent, and this supports that.
Not sure how that could be the AB given that only two pitches were thrown to him.
It finished with Tuiasosopo taking two pitches for balls then a called strike three. I don’t think there’s a differentiation on the site that separates the pitches to Cabrera and Tuiasosopo.
Gotcha, I see what’s up now. That data seems off though. Those show the pitches inside, but both pitches were on the outside corner.
It is from the catcher’s perspective, so that would match. However they did seem much further outside – could be the camera angle was teasing us.
Even on the broadcast they seemed close enough that they could have been strikes. I’d say in this case my expert eyes were in line with the result.
/end-you-know-who-imitation
heh
Dude its the camera angle look at the dirt stripe. You are like 30 degrees off.
Memo to David Ortiz: next time, when the operator says she cannot complete your call as dialed, PLEASE TRY AGAIN. DO NOT SMASH THE PHONE.
MOAR COWGILL!
Trouble is, the A’s had to deal with Pujols, except for yesterday and today. The Rangers won’t.
But they’re going to have to cope with COWGILL!
Let Jeter fellating begin
I am pretty ambivalent about Peavy. On the one hand, he could well be the missing piece, or a replacement for a missing or suspended starter.
On the other hand, he may just be not much better than the starters they have, at a very high price.
I hear you
This. And when I think about our games, it has felt like we have had many more where we couldnt hit than we couldnt keep up. If we have to do a 5 game series where we get say Scherzer twice plus Verlander, I want another bat in my corner first.
NO TWINS PLEASE.
The price is certainly a factor, but he would likely be an upgrade over any A’s starter outside of Colon and possibly Anderson.
IDK, I think we should go for it, I think we are paying league min to all of our starters aside from a $2M Colon.
Now that we are actually in contention I think it warrants spending, our ownership does has money, it’s just not going into the team for whatever reason.
Peavy has been pretty damn good this year- 23% K/ 5% BB, 69.1 FStr, xFIP a full run below ERA.
LOB% and Babip are both slightly under league avg, throw in the Coliseum’s great ‘track’s of land’ and I think he could be a very valuable asset.
Only downside is the 13.1 HR/FB, but its an outlier, career is 9.7 (10.1 in 10′, 7.6 in 11′, 9.7 in 12′) and again the Coli should help.
I tend to agree. My biggest concern would be that last year his fly-ball percentage increased considerably, the yet the home-run rate did not. This year his fly-ball percentage increased again (though not as much), and the homers rate has really gone up. I do not know if this season’s home-run % is “average” given his fly-ball% or if he is getting a tad unlucky. Beyond that though, nothing in his stats indicates a big drop from the 4 WAR pitcher of yester-year.
That’s an interesting point – is there any study tying the FB% with HR/FB%?
Doesn’t US Cellular have an exceptionally high HR park factor?
FWIW, I think Peavy has higher HR/FB on the road over last two years
I think of it as ‘HR friendly’ but haven’t looked it up.
So yeah in 13′ -CHI 1.040 ( Coliseum 0.835), half his games there, then TOR, CLE…
Fangraphs has their park factors broken down year-by-year. For 2013, they only have an overall park factor number, but for 2012 US Cellular is second only to Coors Field for HR park factor.
Pretty much
Wil Myers is pretty good.
And somewhere in Kansas City, a fan is groaning right now
Joe Posnanski is writing another 2000 word blog post…
Better than Brett Anderson…(partially by virtue of not being hurt all the time)
Also, white men can jump. Timing, on the other hand…
Boy, am I grateful for his injury riddled 2011 that allowed me to pry him off a competitor in my dynasty league.
Ok, but your league is hardly competitive if Dayton Moore is in it.
win
I hate Dayton Moore.
Also, Jose Fernandez. My fantasy future looks bright.
8 innings, 13 K, 0 BB, 0 HR, 8:1 GB/FB
$4 keeper baby!
$1, still in my minors, can promote him next year and have him for 2014 and 2015 under that salary
Huge, I’m getting a lot of offers, but damn, I think I have to hold on, he’s special.
Yeah, I was being offered Kershaw for him ($31, contract running out this year), but I balked
Cleveland up 1-0 Top 6. :)
2-0, bottom 6!
4-0 Top 7
Over his last two starts, Chris Sale pitched 17 innings, allowed 3 runs, struck out 18, walked 4 and has an 0:2 record. In seven of his 19 starts this season, White Sox have scored one or fewer runs.
doesn’t have twtw
yeah, no
girthgritBeltre may have broken himself.
After stepping on Andrus.
what happened?
They were running to catch a fly ball in LF foul territory, Andrus ducked and tumbled to get out of the way, but Beltre stepped on his midsection anyway and then landed on his ass very hard dropping the ball as he rolled over violently. Beltre was down for a bit but they both seem to be fine.
Amazing. Will look for it in the replays.
Phillies are well on their way to losing their 8th in a row…give us Utley already.
On a side note, I am all-in on the “acquire Morse” bandwagon.
He would be an interesting August waiver wire pickup. I like him better than Freiman.
Is he still a Mariner?
Probably blocked by the time the A’s can put the claim, right?
Maybe but he has a lot of salary left. The Rangers might do it but hopefully they’re so far out of it by then that they won’t.
If the Rangers are out perhaps, but it is ~$2MM, that shouldn’t be a factor for them if they are in it.
You’re right. I was mistakenly under the impression that he was making a lot more than he actually is.
rollins. philly fans (admittedly dumb)think its a bad contract
FWIW, Rollins is saying he wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause

Programming note: Fox does its second straight Saturday game from the Coliseum this week, Rangers vs. A’s. Buck and McCarver are coming to an A’s home game for the first time since the 2000
ALCSALDS and are doing any A’s game for the first time since 2006 (@NYY).Ew. That’s worse than the sewage!
