Game 83: Don’t feed the birds 277

dead bird

After doing the Lew Wolff Pocket-Lining Marathon in horrendous heat yesterday, I’m trying to decide between watching the game with my feet in a soothing bath or listening to the game in bed. But remembering that some of my companions from yesterday are working at the Alameda County Fair and others are at Pride, I feel compelled to at least throw up a thread before I relax.

            This BART shit has me scared.

            • Englishmajor Jun 30,2013 1:48 pm || Up

              BART and its unions have a long history of settling at the last minute. But if it happens, on a week when a lot of people were already going to take some days off, I think it won’t be quite the Carmageddon some people have feared. If you’re a dishwasher for a restaurant in SF who lives in Richmond and commutes on BART, and leaving two hours early is screwing with your childcare arrangements, that’s going to suck. For most of us, it’s going to be a bad traffic day but not necessarily worse than any other bad traffic day. I am going to clean out my car so I can offer people rides…once I get dressed and get my feet out of this massaging footpath.

                Here’s the difference between Santa Clara County and the rest of the Bay Area. If VTA has a strike, I doubt anybody would notice the difference.

                  I’m referring mainly to VTA light rail, which (I believe) is the worst LR system in the country, with abysmal ridership. I’m sure SamTrans has it’s own issues.

                • Poppy Jun 30,2013 2:03 pm || Up

                  Oh god, yeah, light rail SUCKS. More than an hour to get from Mountain View to downtown SJ? That’s longer than driving at rush hour.

                  There's a wild thing in the woolshed and it's keeping me awake at night.
                • doctorK Jun 30,2013 2:12 pm || Up

                  I remember reading someone’s story recently where he rode his bike to work one day, and took light rail the next, and it took THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME.

                • oblique Jul 1,2013 7:00 am || Up

                  It would take me about the same amount of time, if I had the energy, from Willow Glen to just outside Moffett.

                  I hate to stick up for VTA light rail, because it does suck, for all the reasons stated. But, for my use case, since it has relatively comfortable seats and relatively reliable wi-fi, and no workplace interruptions, it is sometimes the most productive time I have.

              Knowing Jennifer doesn’t want to rent a car, but checking anyway, Dollar.com has a rate of $146.10 (including all taxes/fees) for a compact for a rental at OAK from this afternoon through Saturday morning. I don’t know what the parking situation is where she’s staying, but I’d give it some thought.

                If she’s staying at Ed’s in SF then parking is likely to be problematic. Some kind of super-shuttle may be her best bet, though I’m guessing they’re pretty heavily booked now.

                  Yes, since I’m honoring the picket line I have time today. And dragging luggage on two buses, with a presumably massive line at Eastmont Mall for a Transbay bus, seemed really unpleasant for anyone, much less someone just in from Missouri.

    Ever find yourself wishing that when you had an opinion about someone that might not have been widely shared, you’d said something about it anyway at the time you had that opinion… so that a couple of years later when you were more justified in saying it, people wouldn’t think “Oh, you’re just saying that NOW because it’s obvious.”?

    I got to the beach early today, set up and was reading when a young blonde lady and her professional photographer and crew set up right next to me. Apparently she is creating a portfolio for her nascent modeling career. She was quite attractive, not quite Kate Upton although she shares a couple of Kate’s better features as she displayed during several bikini, wet blouse and topless segments. Seriously, they were there for hours (and were still going when I left) and it mostly looked like a very long day of tough work, not all fun and games as you might think from viewing a short “Inside the Kate Upton SI Photo Shoot” video.

    Ken and Vince talked in my ears for three hours or so and I guess the A’s did OK.

        It’s likely I’ll fully regain my senses tomorrow, when a plumber explains to the new homeowner why it is that when the shower runs in the hallway bathroom, water drips down into his garage.

        • Soaker Jul 2,2013 11:09 am || Up

          Whew, easy fix, now I just need a drywall person to patch the resulting hole in the garage ceiling. I had the plumber replace the kitchen sink faucet too and that was costlier than the leak repair.

          The gas fireplace insert installation is the $$$ project upcoming in a couple weeks, but that will become a major winter heat source and will take a huge amount of strain off the old but functional furnace.

            I read a tidbit in The Nooner, a daily email on California politics, to the effect that there’s a shortage of both drywall and installers in Sacramento, which is probably a good economic indicator. Hope it doesn’t extend over into your neck of the woods.

            Meanwhile, at my ramshackle shack, the transfer of the property from my old landlord to my neighbors in the front house has been delayed because the sewer failed inspection. There’s currently a trench from my yard into the front yard and our common driveway out to the street, and when I left the house an hour ago the sewer guy was down in the trench saying to someone on his cell phone, “I’ve never seen anything like it. I don’t know what to do.” Apparently there are multiple pipes that don’t connect with each other. Fun!

              • Future Ed Jul 2,2013 1:13 pm || Up

                we had a pipe burst in front of our three unit building. Raw sewage was being flushed onto the sidewalk.

                fortunately it was the cities problem. THey dug a giant trench on the street in front. down about 7 feet was a lake of raw sewage.

                WHen the workers were here, theo threw a football in the lake.

    So the missus and I drove down to Monterey and went whale watching today. Good fun, though I did not get to see a blue whale which was my biggest hope. Saw some humpbacks though, quite close for a good stretch of time.

    But the thing that by far will stick with me most vividly happened on the highway en route. On 101 between San Jose and Morgan Hill, I was just starting to pass a bus when Nurse Upgrade said “what’s that thing” in an alarmed voice. Milliseconds later, a fucking king size box spring tumbles end over end across the freeway, in front of the bus and into my lane. I jammed the brakes into a tire smoking screech and swerved towards the bus right next to me, and managed to just barely miss the boxspring and not send our car into a high speed rollover crash. It happened too fast to be terrifying, until it was over, and I looked back in the rear view to see that all the traffic behind me had stopped cold. I have no idea where that fucking thing came from, but I sure am glad that my 48-year-old reflexes are still reasonably sharp.

      Part of any full life is a full-speed NASCAR-style freeway crash. I had something similar happen back when the center divider on 880 was steel guardrail instead of the present concrete Jersey barrier, and was able to admire the dent I put in that thing for a while thereafter.
