No game Thursday? What? Lazy bums! What do they want me to do at work tomorrow? Work? Pshaw.

I miss Bed.
I’m not certain FK survives the winter of 13-14 without him.
Where’s the Ginter tent pic when you need it?
Where’s $5000 when I need it?
If you find it can I have $5?
Im not certain either way. If there are 3-4 more fights where one person decides to leave each time it will end up being a blog of me just screaming about random CY25 ABs.
But I love all you guys and gals and damn well will enjoy every last post.
i still haven’t mailed you anything.
enjoy that m-fer
False promises..,feels like work without status meetings.
A while ago I decided that the next one that Im is going to be when I pack it in. It seemed like they were all about me last winter and that I am bordering on the point where my presence is more a detractor than a positive for the community. I still go back and read the Kay leaving fight on a fairly irregular basis and try to figure out if there was something that I could have done to prevent that. Its not like fighting with Nico where I wanted to fight and cared about being right and showing him as the idiot he is; I really hate fighting with people here.
Anyway, I figure after that, people won’t have the necessary fights to make kraut nonfunctional.
I dont think there was anything you could have done. And really this has to be expected. We are isolated and have no rules. Eventually everyone gets a nerve bent and we have little chances to bring in the legendary “new gen of ** writers”.
I hope if/when the next fight comes you dont just up and leave. You are a net positive to the group.
Agreed on all accounts. Kay was fairly well set on leaving regardless; my own impression is that her priorities had changed and she needed a clean break from what she felt was holding her back. Whatever squabbles she had with DFA were minor compared to everything else she is/was going through.
Also, I miss Bloom regardless of everything.
I don’t see a problem. People are free here to participate or not in any discussion, debate, whatever. It’s up to them. You can say what you want, I can say what I want, and if it bothers someone enough to leave then that’s on them.
I don’t always agree with how far you might push some things but obviously you feel strongly enough about them to do so (and no, I don’t have any specific examples handy). It’s up to me if I want to engage you in it or just go on to another thing. Nothing forces me to argue with you or any other random selection of people here. That’s no different than it is with anybody else.
We don’t exactly have a steady stream of new people coming in so anything that results in someone wanting/needing to leave is a true loss to the community on the whole. It’s not really about any sort of freedom and any wrongs per se. Just that each loss *is* genuinely felt.
When is the next ** exodus?
they have people to excise?
30 currently.
about half of Lookout Landing and a third of lonestarball
“traffic is down because the A’s aren’t winning my ass”
its because the stadium is a bad venue
And the owner is always badmouthing the fans.
Yeah, Nico’s a dipshit.
I get that, but I know this place was set up more because of the problems on the old place that led to people leaving a couple times. Nobody specifically recruits or really expects any rules to be followed and I’m sure others quietly disappear from time to time too. Every place has drama from time to time and if it’s enough that someone leaves I don’t know if that can be helped.
Kay was gone before it even started. Her leaving was the impetus of the fight itself. She wanted to get a few things off her chest before she left and things snowballed from there. Whether I said anything or not, she was gone either way so there was nothing anyone could have done to stop that one short of asking her to be someone she’s not. And that in itself wouldn’t be fair to her. Still, she has a unique perspective on the world that’s sorely missed.
I miss her here, and LB too, but that is tempered by my ability to talk to them elsewhere on the world wide waste of time.
Yeah, I suspect this will be our last season. We’ll go out more White Dwarf than Supernova. Natural evolution of a small internet group without a regular recruiting mechanism. And as important as people think various personal eruptions are in the moment, ultimately I don’t think any of those have meaningfully changed what I would call the pre-ordained arc of a site like this.
Go A’s.
No Eeyores!! You’re bANned!
I think as long as people still want to come here to chat and it’s feasible to keep the site up, it will remain.
yup. even if its me and you james
I will be here.
Smooches.
You forgot “Best wishes”…
Go A’s!
Might as well spend a week or two here and there with the shields down in a gone fishing sort of manner.
Please no.
There are things I post here – pictures especially – that I don’t want showing up on search engines even for a week or two at a time, even were it possible to restrict it to that (which it isn’t – once they’re out, they’re out).
Yeah, seconded (not re: pictures specifically, but the essential “keep the shields up”). I know I don’t check in much any more, but when I do, it’s because I’m familiar & comfortable with the crowd that’s here. Kind of like AN before that all started going to shit 5-6 years ago. I like that we can bring our friends to the pub and introduce them if they haven’t already been here, but… call me unfriendly, I guess, but I don’t want strangers around.
I think we need new blood around here. The google thing is more in jest, but you fkers with lives should do a better job of bring them in.
Well, don’t look at me… I’m surrounded by Giants fans (and “fans”) in real life…
I don’t have many friends IRL, and they’re either (a) already on here, (b) Giants fans, (c) not interested in sports at all, or (d) don’t have extra time to spend online.
I’m working on a girl in Alaska, but first I have to make her an A’s fan.
What the hell? I- I mean, he left too? Please come back, Bed.
He’s on vacation in Hawaii, where (as he has done before) he cuts off all contact with us and perhaps with technology altogether. I’m picturing a grass hut to tell the truth. I think he said he’d be back in late July maybe?
Ohhh, thank you. I thought he was going in August and the conversation made it sound like there had been another major argument here. Glad it wasn’t something like that.
Around the world, around the world.
You’re welcome.
Damn! Paula Deen was dumped by Wal-Mart? You know she’s really fucked up when that happens.
Jamie Foxx as the president? Um. No. HEEEEELLL no. He’s like the anti-Morgan Freeman. I sure as fk don’t want to hear that no talent jackass say titty sprinkles. But damn if that ain’t genius anytime Morgan says it.
Is Channing Tatum naked in that movoe? That’s the limit of his talent.
Hmm… if I were into guys I’d go with someone with more charisma and personality. Abs and a pretty face are a dime a dozen in Hollywood.
I only chose him because he’s in the movie.
I’m not one to criticize someone for enjoying pretty things.
The dog is going out of his mind; there is a fly in the room and he is hanging out in places that are JUST out of his reach.
Cats are better for that. They’ll find a way to get to said spot even if they have to jump straight up and fling themselves around.
Cats are better for everything.
If you mean making me sneeze and peeing on my pillow, I can agree with you.
also hairballs. don’t forget those.
Clawing at my feet under the blanket too…man this list never ends.
Not being needy attention-whores.
I would like to say I dont know what you mean, but the dog now wants me to walk around the house and guess why he is barking…
You’re right about that. There is nothing worse than coming home and having a loved one greet you with “OMG I missed you so much you are my favorite person in the whole world I love you!!!!” ;)
But enough about children …
+1
Feels like pressure I don’t need.
I get that with my three cats. If I’m ready for it, they get their attention and walk away. If not, they sit back, watch, and wait until I’m ready. Occasionally they take a bath while they wait.
One of my cats actually seems to sense when I need a hug, and approaches me then. Yesterday we’d both had shitty days – mine due to work, his due to a vet visit – so he didn’t come to the door to meow at me like he does other times; he was too wiped out, but when I approached him on his ottoman, he was totally there for me. Not really sure how to describe it; nothing totally outward, but the pattern of purring and expressions was very expressive: “I’m glad to see you; you OK? I am too.” He’s a FKing emotional savant.
The other one lacks such sensitivity; she’s sweet and funny but not connected in that way at all.
That wouldn’t be so bad. Too bad it’s more of “OH MY GOD YOU LEFT AND I THOUGHT YOU WERE NEVER COMING BACK IT’S BEEN AT LEAST 4 MINUTES SINCE I LAST SAW YOU PET ME LOVE ME DON’T EVER LEAVE ME AGAIN!!!!”
Too busy being sociopaths
My mom’s dog took out two or three cats, a deer, and at least one skunk over the course of his 13 years. Plus he bit the neighborhood goat badly enough that we needed a vet to stitch it up.
except dogs eat what they kill.
That’s considered “cute.”
Meh. Still nothing compared to humans. Cats ain’t got nothing on us.
Hey — they don’t have cat-day at the ol’ ballyard, now do they? DOG Day is this Friday night BTW, and marks the Official beginning of the A’s’ Drive for the Championship. Last year, it was the first game of the Yankee Sweeps we’ve come to expect at the Collieseum.
Not at the Coliseum or anywhere in MLB that I know of, but the minors are pioneering:
In a carrier?? What fun is that for the cats? I could understand having such a day at slegnA muidatS, but mostly to defend against vermin-not-named-CJ.
Can bring-your-goldfish be far behind?
Oh yes!
That’s a good note.
Indeed. And in fact there was enough room for him to try and jump on the nightstand, but I think he was afraid to/lazy.
I’ll be in KC next weekend and was hoping for a decent show on Sat. or Sun. evening, since A’s-Royals are afternoon games. But the best they can provide for the weekend seems to be Carly Rae Jepsen on Friday night? Grrrr… You are a bigger and better area than that.
hee
He looks like the hamburglar.
Robble robble.
Hey look! It’s Spy. From Spy vs Spy!
Daniel is travelin’ tonight on a plane…
can I have $2.15M?
Thanks, and go As.
hoo boy. That’s a big ‘un.
It’s next door to my grandparents house.
Thanks, and go As.
Tell grandpa to start sunbathing naked and see if that will drive the property value down a bit?
Wouldn’t matter. his place is literally the one next door that has the grass and trees surrounding it.
It’s quite private. I pretty much want to live there more than anything ever ever.
Thanks, and go As.
Best part of that place is you can see idiots like me pumping their little legs to get up the hill on that bike path. That’s how I get to Holdener park on my bike and I usually peter out right where the trail curves just south of that house.
Just in case you ever decide to move to the South Bay, here’s the street for you.
price/sqft: $692
sigh.
Thanks, and go As.
This one is way more affordable. What you might do with 2 bedrooms and 10(!) bathrooms is anyone’s guess.
I would imagine you pee a lot.
Thanks, and go As.
That’s the house for me!!!!
How about this for only $1.895 million.
The funny thing is there are currently 3 places in livermore (2 SFHs, 1 townhouse) under 350k.
The cheapest one is 305k for the townhouse.
That’s more than I can afford.
LOL.
Thanks, and go As.
What would be the monthly payment on a 350k home?
Assuming 20% down, you’re looking at roughly 1750 per month with the way rates have just jumped up to over 4% the last week or so.
Thanks, and go As.
How long of a mortgage?
30 year
Thanks, and go As.
The monthly payments on that 2.2M place I linked up above? $8,500
With 20% down. Who the fuck has 450 grand as a down payment just laying around
Thanks, and go As.
People who bought 20 years ago for nearly nothing and are selling now.
and if you DON’T have 20% down, then you’re paying PMI as well which is I think 1.3% — so to use myself as an example since I don’t have 70 grand laying around to use as a down payment…
350K sale price MINUS
3.5% down (FHA) – 12250
3377500 financed PLUS
UFMPI (up front mortgage insurance) 6000
343500 financed total
$1640 mortgage payment PLUS
1.35% PMI – $380
$2020 grand total monthly payment
and this is why I can’t afford a house. :)
Thanks, and go As.
however… rents are FKing sky high here as well.
“2 bed 2 bath $1600
“2 bed 1 bath apt $1625
:|
Thanks, and go As.
I don’t think I could even eek out the 2020 on what I make, and I got a raise
Yeah, trying to survive on a single income FKing sucks really.
Thanks, and go As.
After taxes i have about 3k of income (not counting car allowance) So Id have to cut my food and alcohol expenditure by at least 50% and that would barely make it work.
That’s about what I’m hoping to be at each month after I get full-time again. At least, it’d be enough extra to allow me some more options.
It’d also be much nicer since my mortgage and money held for taxes and insurance runs me around $920/mo now.
That’s right about where I’m at, but I cannot responsibly spend over 50% of my take home pay on rent/mortgage/whatever, especially considering I also have about 600 bucks worth of monthly costs that I can’t get rid of. I’d be left with a few hundred dollars per month to do stuff like eat and feed my kids.
Thanks, and go As.
Top Ramen and Kool-aid every night doesnt sound healthy and good?
No, it doesn’t.
To the kids it’s probably awesome.
Thanks, and go As.
Yeah. My daughter would eat cup of noodles at least once a day every day if I let her. And as much as it is a cheap alternative I have to say…uh nah, lets cook something.
I told you I’d be your roomie!
This place just came up on CL today
1800 bucks for a 3/1, 1000 sqft place in the dumpy ass part of town. Sure it’s renovated and stuff but… it doesn’t have AC, only wall units. It gets over 110 degrees in Livermore.
Thanks, and go As.
Area around Junction is a little, uh, dumpy.
Dude I grew up here. I’m well aware of the shithole area that house is in.
Thanks, and go As.
That first place will give you easy access to the Livermore Casino. “WINNER!”
Chase Utley?
Dave Cameron thinks it’s a good idea.
I think it’s a great idea assuming the cost is minimal. I don’t think Choice, Gray, or Green should be on the table.
Thanks, and go As.
not grey, i am soso on choice, they can have green
Um, do they want Michael Taylor back?
Thanks, and go As.
Sounds about right.
Same. I like Green and all, but it’s not like he’s a world beater in the making. Choice, I kind of still have hope for him, but meh. If it was necessary, I’d bite that bullet. Gray would be untouchable.
green doesn’t do it though, does he?
Expensive guys in the last year of their deals haven’t really yielded top talent in recent years, with the delicious exception of Carlos Beltran. I’m thinking Green plus another so-so prospect or two would get it done.
Beltran was also playing way way better than utley
Green and we’ll throw in some Suck Ass. Their choice!
I was disappointed that Cameron didn’t include *any* discussion of who the A’s might have to give up in return.
In the comments, we have the blockbuster suggestion of Choice, Gray, Muncy, and (maybe) Green for Utley and Lee, plus salary relief. Also, this comment:
I just can’t see the Phillies trading Lee. It’s a big contract, but he’s earning it.
What’s the scoop on Max Muncy, by the way? He’s putting up some pretty crazy numbers.
Yeah, and I walt to see at least one GG AB in Oakland before we throw him away. I still believe that some combo of Green and Weeks cant be worse than Sogales.
Apparently the A’s do.
I would rather have Utley than Green
2-3 months of Utley vs. 6 years of Green? Probably, but only because the fact that Green isn’t in Oakland right now tells me that the A’s don’t think he’s all that good.
I’m not giving them Choice or Gray, as much as I want Utley.
Green cant play defense and isn’t hitting well when you consider the likely BABIP luck hes getting and that hes actually striking out at a higher rate this year.
You might also cross your fingers he might be worth and willing to extend after spending time in Oakland as a result of his stay.
also since the Marlins are apparently trading dudes, can we please go and grab Kevin Slowey? Thanks.
Thanks, and go As.
Yes please.
Do something, you good for nothing Yankees.
At least the tigers are tied with the Angels. Although, I don’t want them to lose too many
I would give my left nut for the A’s to have Jurickson Profar
Yeah, but what would they do with it? Give it to Beltre?
win
It seems that Starlin Castro has fallen out of favor in Chicago…
Thanks, and go As.
Never been high on him. KG hated his ass
Holland maddox’s. (CG SO less than 100 pitches). Doens’t make up for the fact that he 1) went to a counting crows show on monday and 2) was kicked out
I like Holland. And I loved Counting Crows 20 years ago).
Their frontman Adam Duritz is a HUGE A’s fan though, so props for that.
Thanks, and go As.
round here, there aren’t many A’s fans
we all want to trade for big big stars
but we don’t know why and we don’t know how
So, isn’t there a way the real party in interest could challenge this.
Also, I though there had to be a controversy before you could be in court. My civ pro goes as far as Pennoyer.
So, are flights to Cabo expensive?
Thanks, and go As.
Depends when, how long for, and what counts as expensive. A cursory search turns up $300 1-week return trips from SFO off season.
That seems expensive to me. I’m a cheap bastard though.
Thanks, and go As.
wait. Today is the off day?
Any of you FKers know about special/supplemental needs trusts?
I trust that my children will grow up and take care of my special needs; that’s why I periodically bribe them with candy.
So that’s one “no” then.
From the financial or the legal side?
Both.
We set one up for little miss specialK. As I remember, the biggest benefit is that by putting her share of the estate in this type of trust, they can’t reduce her level of social services.
That’s the goal (only with the parents-in-laws’ estates passing to the brother-in-law, and mrs ptbnl likely being the trustee).
One question is that when you set the trust up each state seems to have its own specific wording requirements. But what happens if the beneficiary and/or trustee moves state?
that’s some anti-federalist bullshit is what that is.
What do you expect from a damforner who thinks that HMS Terror was an arctic exploration vessel.
So Cliff Pennington is a 3Bman now.
Pfft. He’s no Josh Donaldson.
Ahhhh!
You on vacation, baby?
Excuse you?
are you on vacation?
baby
No, sir. Two more shifts.
“Shit no, I’m on vacation, baby.”
I have to work 2 days on my vacatoin
Ouch, that’s the worst. I’m hopeful that my vacas this summer won’t include that. I might be asked to cross a picket line Monday though.
I hate that. I had to do it with interpreters a few years ago. THankfully, none of my clients that day needed the services.
fuck that shit
Yeah. My wife’s been on rolling strikes and lockouts for more than a year. I couldn’t look her in the eye or myself in the mirror.
I couldn’t figure out why your wife was on roller skates for a year.
She’s a roller derby girl on the side.
That woman is amazing.
On the side of what?
Patching her teammates up as a nurse.
I think I want to be her friend.
FSU can make that happen.
I did cross a picket line once in my life, at Candlestick when the umpires struck opening day one year. I still feel bad about it. And they’re umpires!
I tried in France when the rail workers were striking, but the police wouldn’t let us.
The lab has started refusing permission to telecommute, take vacation, or self-certify as sick, on days where there are picket lines. Unpaid leave is still allowed though.
that is super fucked up.
who should i write a sternly worded letter to?
Barbara Lee.
Who reads that shit?
CSNCA replaying the A’s-BoSox game from 7/3/12.
I don’t recall that game. I was out of town
We win!
woo hoo.
Gold ALts according to my magnet calendar
Where are the Brandons of yesteryear?
There, there. There, there.
az(dl), pitt(pieguy), first base, minor leagues (guess)(inf).
mets las vegas. having a decent year
Bottom of the ninth coming up next…
And Coco gets pied on the postgame by a fly-by Reddick. Good times.
I’m being paid to be here right now. Anybody need me to bring them anything? Copy edit anything?
Some dude named Bojan just got picked in the NBA draft.
Bad pick, his wife doesn’t want to move here.
They’ve reserved tomorrow for his Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
TV ad on A’s game for Sat 7/7 BBQ Championships event, 1000am-500p. Sounds appealing. Except it’s held in what they’re now calling “the Creekside Lot,” hard by the shores of the Damon Slough.
I’m watching this Phillies game so as to pine for Chase Utley. He hit a home run that Puig nearly killed himself trying to catch.
Eri Yoshida is coming back to pitch against the Pacifics in San Rafael on July 6, which is a week from Saturday. Get your tickets now!
Jennifer, are you still here in the evening or do you leave that morning? I know it was one of the weekend mornings….
EARLY on the 6th.
Bummer.
At this point I’m just hoping I make it out of the airport.
The “J.D.” in “J.D. Drew” stands for “David Jonathan.”
That makes no sense.
“D.J. Drew” sounds like a hip-hop therapist.
Jonathan Drew gets shorten to J. D. most likely. I can see how that would play out.
Ready for the heat today:
Red star Oakland?
Да, товарищ
It’s thermocoupled – I’m trying to get it back down to green.
Way to go, Rockhounds…
Best part: did you see that the NW Arkansas pitcher who threw that gem is named Brooks Pounders!!! That’s probably like 9 or 10 bNAR* right there.

NEVER MET HERS!
Am I the only one who thinks the New Yorker cover of Bert and Ernie is kind of inappropriate to suggest what it seems to? I say this because I know Bert and Ernie being lovers is a popular internet meme but they were never presented as such to kids. Ever.
That was my reaction, as well.
No, you’re not.
Is it inappropriate to have gay characters on seseme street? No. Is it a common thing for closeted people to say their partner is their “roommate”? Yes, Is it indicative of the idea that gay people normal human being who are from all walks of life, are our neighbors, our families, our friends, our muppets? Yes.
Is it inappropriate? HELL FUCKING NO.
Thing is, Children’s Television Workshop has flat out said there’s nothing more to Bert and Ernie than them being close friends. It’s others who are trying to force there to be more to it than that.
At first I was going to argue that there shouldn’t be gay characters on SS, much less straight characters and that SS just doesn’t delve into those topics. But Susan and Gordon still exist in a very limited role on the show, adopted a son in the 80s who apparently graduated from high school.
So, yeah, I’m all for having a gay couple on SS, whether muppets or people, although I’m guessing that they aren’t going to do that anytime soon, since PBS worries about getting funding cuts annually. And given what happened to Kevin Clash (Elmo) after he was forced to come out.
While the magazine makes a good point and, as FSU says, it’s an adult magazine, if Spawn1 ever saw the cover, it would be tricky to explain it. Much more tricky that explaining the SCOTUS rulings, which we already have done. So that’s my main concern.
Regardless, I’m happy that my kids can live in a world (at least my part of it) where having same-sex parents is just a fact of life. And my son can make my step-father horribly uncomfortable by saying that kids can have a mom and a dad, or two dads, or two moms. And hopefully, sometime soon, Oregon will go the way of its neighbors and reverse the idiotic ballot measure that was passed nine years ago. And attend a same-sex wedding ceremony.
That would be an interesting conversation. Since there are no words on that cover, I wonder how many kids will get the implication. Maybe it depends on how well-educated they are in current events and stuff like that.
And don’t get me wrong – I wouldn’t have a problem with Sesame Street having gay characters, though I definitely agree with you on why they’d steer clear of it. But to me, Bert and Ernie are not gay no matter what people on the internet have tried to claim.
However, Bert IS fucking evil.
1:15 or so
Heh. Well, it’s not like I’m against gay marriage.
To be clear, I have absolutely NO problem with telling my kids about gay couples getting married in real life and hope that I will be able to attend a gay ceremony at some point. (I was hoping to be able to in April when my cousin got married in Santa Cruz, but kids weren’t invited, so I didn’t go).
The difficulty is in explaining why two Sesame Street characters who have no supposed sexual orientation per their creators are cuddling up on a couch watching a Supreme Court decision regarding gay marriage.
May be its the growing up in SF thing, but it wouldn’t be a tough conversation with our kids if they understand the context.
its not for anyone other than CTW to say what they are
This.
I was unaware of it until your comment, here it is for anyone else who hadn’t seen it:
It doesn’t bother me at all, given that the New Yorker is a publication for adults (for the most part arrogent elitist adults, but that’s a differnet issue). I think it’s actually poignant and suitably understated.
I’ll agree the message sent is well done, subtle and tasteful, but I’d have gone for a different representation of the point.
If there are any children who do read the New Yorker on a regular basis…one can assume they are already well-equipped to process the message. (Also, I would like to meet these kids)
My children are not old enough to read the New Yorker. They are, however, plenty old enough to see the New Yorker sitting on someone’s coffee table and comment. Spawn2 would simply say “Ernie” and “Bert” in her adorable voice and maybe say “watching TV”. Spawn1 would ask enough questions to figure out exactly why Bert and Erne are sitting together and watching the TV and what are the people on the TV and why are they watching the Supreme Court and then, when he isn’t fully satisfied or understanding of our answer, even if we’ve made every effort to answer as fully and completely as possible (i.e., some people like to say that Ernie and Bert love each other like mommy and daddy (or gay friends Michael and Ben do) and the magazine is showing that even if they don’t really love each other on the TV show to make a point), ask us the same questions again maybe slightly differently. And we will answer him again. Then he will share every last bit of that information with a stranger in line at the ice cream store.
I was being facetious (as per usual), but I get what you’re saying — even though I don’t have kids myself (as far as I know). I also understand the beef some people have with co-opting characters from a kid’s TV show, regardless of what the message is.
Either way, Bert and Ernie really shouldn’t get married. Bert seems to kind of hate Ernie.
Well, if they do break up, Big Bird is ready to step in – after all, he always is on a Journey to Ernie.
Then Snuffy will start getting, um, snuffy.
From The Negotiator:
Danny Roman: I like westerns, like Shane.
Chris Sabian: It’s interesting that you pick one where the hero dies.
Danny Roman: What are you talking about? He doesn’t die. He rides off into the sunset, and that kid says “Come back, Shane!”
Chris Sabian: That’s a common misconception, in the last frame he’s slumped over on his horse.
Danny Roman: So he was slumped, slumped don’t mean dead.
Chris Sabian: Well I guess you think Butch and Sundance lived too.
I love Shane!
So, did he die? Was he gay?
I don’t think he dies.
I don’t think hes gay. I think a big part of it is that he has the hots for the wife
One interesting fact: Eck’s 40-save streak only included 6 one-run leads. Balfour’s streak (36 and counting) has already had 15.
That stood out to me too, yeah.
This guy.

DFA, another reason you need to come to Portland this summer.
In the process of moving stuff over to Flickr, I realized I had a couple of this guy from a game in Stockton:
Uno
Dos
FKing Coco bobble-lean. I can’t tell you how little I want to go to Oakland at the crack of dawn, get in line in the sun & heat, and then watch a game in the sun & heat from the front-row ptbnl seats. If I wasn’t having a friend come all the way down from Santa Rosa so I can get two bobbles (she’s a Giants fan), I would strongly consider just leaving after getting the fking things… :(
Speaking of: anyone have an extra?!? I hate buying things like this on eBay, but I can’t not have the A’s version of Mrs. N’s favorite player.
I may still have room for a negotiation, if we actually get there in time. Unfortunately linea alba isn’t going with me, but I’ll see if my friend is willing to sell.
Looks like we’re out of luck. I pitched it, but no go – it apparently has a special place designated for it in a man cave. So I can’t really argue with that.
Fair enough
Sorry to hear that. Weather.com says *only* 81°, but I know how miserable that can feel too. I like to soak a hat in a cooler of ice water for awhile, then put it on as I go into the blistering sun, allowing copious streams of ice water to pour down my neck back and chest. Really keeps a cool sensation going for a good while. Or you could do this with your shirt. If so please tell us so I can DVR the game.
We’re in the first of an expected five straight days around 105. Ahhh, AC.
Up to 111 here Monday. I was feeling bad til I heard an interview with soneone in Death Valley, where it is 120…
I plan to attach a 35-mile extension to our household garden hose, drag it to the ballpark with me, and set up a portable shower at my seat. Don’t bother with the DVR, I’m sure I’ll turn up in someone’s YouTube horror show.
The business of giving bobbleheads to the first 15,000 through the gates bothers me because it seems like you promote the hell out of that then leave 20,000 people disappointed. How much more would it cost to make 35,000 bobbleheads to make sure everybody gets one? If you plan that before the season and then the A’s go 20-61 in the first half and only draw 22,000 to the game, then you have a bunch of Grab Bag Nights for the meaningless September games, when customers get their choice of the leftover Coco bobbleheads, the leftover Adam Rosales Jersey Day shirts, etc.
I ended up with three Jason Giambi (part two) bobbleheads because they were in September “thank you” gift bags… and I think there had only been 10,000 of those to begin with.
They were also on sale for $5 on RBF day this year. I think the A’s will never, ever, ever be rid of them.
Eh, I dunno. Bobbleheads are more costly than any other giveaway I can think of, so the sponsorship tab to Pepsi or Cache Creek or Wells Fargo is heftier than, say, Pet Calendar day. I assume it’s done this way in most MLB parks, don’t really know.
but people actually display the advertising on the bobble, compared to say, the cereal bowl or the sweeney jersey, or the pom poms. so I bet there is a heaftier pay in.
Giants give out 40K. Maybe not the best comparison, though.
Rays are giving out 20K Longoria bobbleheads, other ones (mascot type things) say “while supplies last.”
Marlins give out 15K.
Mariners give out 20K.
I’m not checking every team, but clearly (and not surprisingly) Oakland is on the low end.
I agree with Ed’s point below, it’s another one of those things that saves a few bucks for the team now, but costs them casual fans in the long term.
Also when there is too much scarcity it drives up the aftermarket price, and gives even more incentive to the ebay scalpers.
Admittedly there is a long lead time on these items, and it can be hard to know several months in advance how the team will be drawing. The A’s are doing better on the field and at the gate than any of us would have predicted, even after last year’s division championship. But still, it seems like doing say 25K for a popular item like this at a summer weekend series would be better for the fans, and in the long run smarter for the team.
Agreed throughout, except I suspect they way it works is that before the season, the team markets Giveaway Sponsorships to companies with fixed parameters. Pay a certain fixed sum and produce 15,000 items. $100K, maybe more? It’s possible that there’s a price point the A’s can’t exceed and still fill the many Giveaway Sponsorships they schedule.
In a place like NYY, of course, they can charge much more, and still the value of the exposure for Pepsi or Wells Fargo makes the actual item production cost incidental. The exposure value from an Oakland (or Miami or Tampa etc) deal is much less, so cost of entry is more meaningful to them.
Of course, this all depends on proper value and pricing analysis by the team marketing department, which I certainly don’t assume.

AV: Drops knowledge, steps away.
A Free Kraut mic drop.
i always thought a mic drop was a fuck you. (not what i was doing. at all.)
Heh, let’s just say it’s for “dramatic effect.” (which is how I usually read it)
Nah. It’s more of an unspoken “Game. Set. Match.” with a little swagger thrown in.
My friend reports she got there two hours early and had to buy one off a cardinals fan :(
that is outrageous. Basically, you had to queue up before the gates opened.
And hope you lined up at the right gate. Im sure not all gates are equal.
Suite and season ticket holder lines are always best. I got to the Coliseum about 8:15, and there were maybe 30 people in the season ticket holder line already. I heard of people who arrived as late as 9:45 who got them.
My friend who joined me in the ST line at the last minute said the line at the south gate (C? D? I can never remember the letter on that gate) was only just starting to go into the parking lot — so that line was probably okay until about 10:30 or so, because the first 3-4 “layers” of that line generally get the 15K giveaways. The ST line, though, was all the way down the hill and wrapped around the base of the arena at that point.
My buddy got there a little after 10 and got one (admittedly with very few left) because I told him of the secret of the suite line.
He has promised me many beers in thanks.
Can you enter the suite line without suite tickets?
Yes, but now you’ve figured that out we’ll have to kill you. (Also, the suite or STH entrances are the best even on non-giveaway days, since you can immediately get on an elevator and ride up to the West Side Club.)
Ouch, that sucks.
If “two hours early” means gate-opening time of 11:05 (2 hrs before game time), that’s way too late for anything but a Chris Young bobblehead…
I might take a CY25 bobble bat doll if it came with free season tix…
Force people to get there early, while sitting around they’re more likely to buy inflated priced food items.
you can do that with 15000 or 20000.
Point being, the coco lean day, will get 30,000+. More people will go to the game and NOT get the give away than will. that is not right
I think it was FSU mentioning a few years ago or maybe “gonealookin” that it was always sad when the A’s would finally get a good crown and have a terrible game. not encouraging the casual fan to come again. give aways like th ebobbles are perfect for bringing those people out. getting shafted on the giveaway doesn’t encourage people to comeback. Especially when you see 40 or so bobbles crossing the BART bridge as you are racing through the crowd to get one.
I don’t see the average casual fan that misses out caring that much. And the rabid fan comes back regardless. I’m not saying you’re necessarily wrong in that some people will be disappointed, but it’s also possible that someone who misses out this time will show up earlier next time to beat the crowd. And there’s something about standing around in a large crowd waiting for something with the excitement it brings that’s either addictive or enhances the overall experience.
From WACs facebook:
Wow, that sounds way worse than any giveaway line I’ve ever seen.
{attempts, and fails, to stay quiet and protect her advantage as a natural south-lot-C-gate user}
I’ve said this before, but as much as I know virtually every part of the Coliseum complex, the southern parking lot might as well be on Mars for all I know of it. Seriously, they could have all-nude tailgate parties with unlimited free beer for all, and I’d be completely unaware.
They do. It ain’t pretty.
I had to park there last week when I arrived very late and they’d blocked off the 66th Street entrance for some stupid reason. It was weird.
The seismic work on the overpass?
Wait, I think they said they wouldn’t be doing that work during game-related stuff.
And indeed they weren’t doing any work, as far as I could tell, but they’d blocked it off anyway. I think it might have been a communications error. This was about the fourth inning, and everyone who arrived when they were supposed to got in with no issues.
Then you’re not drinking enough free beer.
An organization I’m in had a tailgate for one of the A’s/Giants last year. It was in the south lot.
I was unsurprised to find the tailgate organizers were Giants fans.
(I was lost before 20 minutes before finding them, it is strange and confusing down there)
Oh my god, you guys, it’s just a parking lot!
A mysterious and strange parking lot.
A parking lot WITH A MAYOR.
I had some friends organize a tailgate there once too. IIRC, there’s a fence along the south end that actually makes a pretty good spot to set up.
That being said, north side forever, yo.
A part of me wonders if they are just out of extra room for storing excessive bobblegiveaways, given that I am sure there is a giant basement full of Karros, Giambi, and Buck bobbleheads somewhere deep, deep under the Coliseum.
There was a Karros bobblehead?!
…I’m mixed up, I meant Piazza. My brain tends to mix them up as ‘vaguely useless vets from The Dark Times’.
You meant a huge basement, right? Not that word you used.
WE JUST ACCEPTED AN OFFER ON OUR CONDO! FK. YES.
Grats!
Good, that worked out well for you.
1. Is it all cash?
2. Where is it in relation to asking and to your expectations?
1. No
2. Higher than both
2. NICE!
Right on! You’re free of the real estate market for years to come! I want to be that.
Meanwhile, I’m going to be beginning my studies for a real estate license this weekend.
I don’t feel badly towards the real estate profession (unlike say bankers or politicians), I just feel out of my depth and thus uneasy.
Yeah, I have no idea how this is going to go but I need it to at least be authorized to have certain discussions with potential clients on the corporate side. I could end up doing some deals at some point, though. At the least, having a license will make for a lot more options than I have now.
Yeah. I think this could be a long-term solution
Awesome! Congrats!!
Yay!
Thanks all.
And speaking of bobblethings: Jennifer… what games are you planning to go to while you’re here, so I can finally give you BobbleHattie?
Um… I can’t remember. I’ll get back to you.
I think I’m just going Wednesday 7/3.
Just one game? Do you want to go with me Tuesday?
I already have plans for Tuesday night. Thanks, though. :(
Awbooo. I’m not going Wednesday… :(
I don’t have high hopes of me actually making it to CA anyway.
Why not? If you start walking now…
I just feel…weird.
You’ll be fine, you’ll enjoy yourself and set your own pace for most everything you do. You’d be mad at yourself later if you backed out, I bet.
It’s so much backing out I’m concerned about.
Former Athletic Casper Wells now making his pitching debut in that no-pitching first game of the doubleheader in Chicago.
Oh dear.
Casper Wells is having trouble locating his four-seam fastball, missing the strike zone with his last three.
He got out of the inning just issuing the one walk.
Not bad at all. We should re-acquire him after the next time Jesse Chavez goes 3+ innings. I bet he could be the emergency catcher too.
Nicely, Shrek.
Here’s my obligatory post-in-the-wrong-FKing-thread comment.
It wouldn’t be a doctorK game without one.
