        Im not certain either way. If there are 3-4 more fights where one person decides to leave each time it will end up being a blog of me just screaming about random CY25 ABs.

        But I love all you guys and gals and damn well will enjoy every last post.

          A while ago I decided that the next one that Im is going to be when I pack it in. It seemed like they were all about me last winter and that I am bordering on the point where my presence is more a detractor than a positive for the community. I still go back and read the Kay leaving fight on a fairly irregular basis and try to figure out if there was something that I could have done to prevent that. Its not like fighting with Nico where I wanted to fight and cared about being right and showing him as the idiot he is; I really hate fighting with people here.

          Anyway, I figure after that, people won’t have the necessary fights to make kraut nonfunctional.

            I dont think there was anything you could have done. And really this has to be expected. We are isolated and have no rules. Eventually everyone gets a nerve bent and we have little chances to bring in the legendary “new gen of ** writers”.

            I hope if/when the next fight comes you dont just up and leave. You are a net positive to the group.

              Agreed on all accounts. Kay was fairly well set on leaving regardless; my own impression is that her priorities had changed and she needed a clean break from what she felt was holding her back. Whatever squabbles she had with DFA were minor compared to everything else she is/was going through.

              Also, I miss Bloom regardless of everything.

            I don’t see a problem. People are free here to participate or not in any discussion, debate, whatever. It’s up to them. You can say what you want, I can say what I want, and if it bothers someone enough to leave then that’s on them.

            I don’t always agree with how far you might push some things but obviously you feel strongly enough about them to do so (and no, I don’t have any specific examples handy). It’s up to me if I want to engage you in it or just go on to another thing. Nothing forces me to argue with you or any other random selection of people here. That’s no different than it is with anybody else.

            • dmoas Jun 27,2013 10:44 am || Up

              We don’t exactly have a steady stream of new people coming in so anything that results in someone wanting/needing to leave is a true loss to the community on the whole. It’s not really about any sort of freedom and any wrongs per se. Just that each loss *is* genuinely felt.

                I get that, but I know this place was set up more because of the problems on the old place that led to people leaving a couple times. Nobody specifically recruits or really expects any rules to be followed and I’m sure others quietly disappear from time to time too. Every place has drama from time to time and if it’s enough that someone leaves I don’t know if that can be helped.

          • dmoas Jun 27,2013 10:42 am || Up

            Kay was gone before it even started. Her leaving was the impetus of the fight itself. She wanted to get a few things off her chest before she left and things snowballed from there. Whether I said anything or not, she was gone either way so there was nothing anyone could have done to stop that one short of asking her to be someone she’s not. And that in itself wouldn’t be fair to her. Still, she has a unique perspective on the world that’s sorely missed.

        Yeah, I suspect this will be our last season. We’ll go out more White Dwarf than Supernova. Natural evolution of a small internet group without a regular recruiting mechanism. And as important as people think various personal eruptions are in the moment, ultimately I don’t think any of those have meaningfully changed what I would call the pre-ordained arc of a site like this.

            There are things I post here – pictures especially – that I don’t want showing up on search engines even for a week or two at a time, even were it possible to restrict it to that (which it isn’t – once they’re out, they’re out).

              Yeah, seconded (not re: pictures specifically, but the essential “keep the shields up”). I know I don’t check in much any more, but when I do, it’s because I’m familiar & comfortable with the crowd that’s here. Kind of like AN before that all started going to shit 5-6 years ago. I like that we can bring our friends to the pub and introduce them if they haven’t already been here, but… call me unfriendly, I guess, but I don’t want strangers around.

                  I get that with my three cats. If I’m ready for it, they get their attention and walk away. If not, they sit back, watch, and wait until I’m ready. Occasionally they take a bath while they wait.

                • oblique Jun 28,2013 11:11 am || Up

                  One of my cats actually seems to sense when I need a hug, and approaches me then. Yesterday we’d both had shitty days – mine due to work, his due to a vet visit – so he didn’t come to the door to meow at me like he does other times; he was too wiped out, but when I approached him on his ottoman, he was totally there for me. Not really sure how to describe it; nothing totally outward, but the pattern of purring and expressions was very expressive: “I’m glad to see you; you OK? I am too.” He’s a FKing emotional savant.

                  The other one lacks such sensitivity; she’s sweet and funny but not connected in that way at all.

                  Not at the Coliseum or anywhere in MLB that I know of, but the minors are pioneering:

                  even though you might have envisioned a scenario where the furry friends were roaming free, the team is mandating that participating cats are required to be kept inside a carrier at all times.
                  Recognizing that some cats may tend to be a bit anti-social, the Blue Rocks recommend that fans should “take into consideration potential weather conditions (heat or rain) before bringing their cat to the game.

            Assuming 20% down, you’re looking at roughly 1750 per month with the way rates have just jumped up to over 4% the last week or so.

              and if you DON’T have 20% down, then you’re paying PMI as well which is I think 1.3% — so to use myself as an example since I don’t have 70 grand laying around to use as a down payment…

              350K sale price MINUS
              3.5% down (FHA) – 12250
              3377500 financed PLUS
              UFMPI (up front mortgage insurance) 6000
              343500 financed total

              $1640 mortgage payment PLUS
              1.35% PMI – $380

              $2020 grand total monthly payment

                  That’s about what I’m hoping to be at each month after I get full-time again. At least, it’d be enough extra to allow me some more options.

      Is it inappropriate? HELL FUCKING NO.

      • JamesV Jun 28,2013 10:10 am || Up

        Thing is, Children’s Television Workshop has flat out said there’s nothing more to Bert and Ernie than them being close friends. It’s others who are trying to force there to be more to it than that.

      • PDXAthleticsfan Jun 28,2013 10:14 am || Up

        At first I was going to argue that there shouldn’t be gay characters on SS, much less straight characters and that SS just doesn’t delve into those topics. But Susan and Gordon still exist in a very limited role on the show, adopted a son in the 80s who apparently graduated from high school.

        So, yeah, I’m all for having a gay couple on SS, whether muppets or people, although I’m guessing that they aren’t going to do that anytime soon, since PBS worries about getting funding cuts annually. And given what happened to Kevin Clash (Elmo) after he was forced to come out.

        While the magazine makes a good point and, as FSU says, it’s an adult magazine, if Spawn1 ever saw the cover, it would be tricky to explain it. Much more tricky that explaining the SCOTUS rulings, which we already have done. So that’s my main concern.

        Regardless, I’m happy that my kids can live in a world (at least my part of it) where having same-sex parents is just a fact of life. And my son can make my step-father horribly uncomfortable by saying that kids can have a mom and a dad, or two dads, or two moms. And hopefully, sometime soon, Oregon will go the way of its neighbors and reverse the idiotic ballot measure that was passed nine years ago. And attend a same-sex wedding ceremony.

        A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.
        • JamesV Jun 28,2013 10:17 am || Up

          That would be an interesting conversation. Since there are no words on that cover, I wonder how many kids will get the implication. Maybe it depends on how well-educated they are in current events and stuff like that.

          And don’t get me wrong – I wouldn’t have a problem with Sesame Street having gay characters, though I definitely agree with you on why they’d steer clear of it. But to me, Bert and Ernie are not gay no matter what people on the internet have tried to claim.

          However, Bert IS fucking evil.

              To be clear, I have absolutely NO problem with telling my kids about gay couples getting married in real life and hope that I will be able to attend a gay ceremony at some point. (I was hoping to be able to in April when my cousin got married in Santa Cruz, but kids weren’t invited, so I didn’t go).

              The difficulty is in explaining why two Sesame Street characters who have no supposed sexual orientation per their creators are cuddling up on a couch watching a Supreme Court decision regarding gay marriage.

        • PDXAthleticsfan Jun 28,2013 3:14 pm || Up

          My children are not old enough to read the New Yorker. They are, however, plenty old enough to see the New Yorker sitting on someone’s coffee table and comment. Spawn2 would simply say “Ernie” and “Bert” in her adorable voice and maybe say “watching TV”. Spawn1 would ask enough questions to figure out exactly why Bert and Erne are sitting together and watching the TV and what are the people on the TV and why are they watching the Supreme Court and then, when he isn’t fully satisfied or understanding of our answer, even if we’ve made every effort to answer as fully and completely as possible (i.e., some people like to say that Ernie and Bert love each other like mommy and daddy (or gay friends Michael and Ben do) and the magazine is showing that even if they don’t really love each other on the TV show to make a point), ask us the same questions again maybe slightly differently. And we will answer him again. Then he will share every last bit of that information with a stranger in line at the ice cream store.

      The business of giving bobbleheads to the first 15,000 through the gates bothers me because it seems like you promote the hell out of that then leave 20,000 people disappointed. How much more would it cost to make 35,000 bobbleheads to make sure everybody gets one? If you plan that before the season and then the A’s go 20-61 in the first half and only draw 22,000 to the game, then you have a bunch of Grab Bag Nights for the meaningless September games, when customers get their choice of the leftover Coco bobbleheads, the leftover Adam Rosales Jersey Day shirts, etc.

        Eh, I dunno. Bobbleheads are more costly than any other giveaway I can think of, so the sponsorship tab to Pepsi or Cache Creek or Wells Fargo is heftier than, say, Pet Calendar day. I assume it’s done this way in most MLB parks, don’t really know.

          Giants give out 40K. Maybe not the best comparison, though.
          Rays are giving out 20K Longoria bobbleheads, other ones (mascot type things) say “while supplies last.”
          Marlins give out 15K.
          Mariners give out 20K.
          I’m not checking every team, but clearly (and not surprisingly) Oakland is on the low end.

          I agree with Ed’s point below, it’s another one of those things that saves a few bucks for the team now, but costs them casual fans in the long term.

          Also when there is too much scarcity it drives up the aftermarket price, and gives even more incentive to the ebay scalpers.

          Admittedly there is a long lead time on these items, and it can be hard to know several months in advance how the team will be drawing. The A’s are doing better on the field and at the gate than any of us would have predicted, even after last year’s division championship. But still, it seems like doing say 25K for a popular item like this at a summer weekend series would be better for the fans, and in the long run smarter for the team.

          TINSTAAFK
          • FreeSeatUpgrade Jun 29,2013 9:17 am || Up

            Agreed throughout, except I suspect they way it works is that before the season, the team markets Giveaway Sponsorships to companies with fixed parameters. Pay a certain fixed sum and produce 15,000 items. $100K, maybe more? It’s possible that there’s a price point the A’s can’t exceed and still fill the many Giveaway Sponsorships they schedule.

            In a place like NYY, of course, they can charge much more, and still the value of the exposure for Pepsi or Wells Fargo makes the actual item production cost incidental. The exposure value from an Oakland (or Miami or Tampa etc) deal is much less, so cost of entry is more meaningful to them.

            Of course, this all depends on proper value and pricing analysis by the team marketing department, which I certainly don’t assume.

                that is outrageous. Basically, you had to queue up before the gates opened.

                  Suite and season ticket holder lines are always best. I got to the Coliseum about 8:15, and there were maybe 30 people in the season ticket holder line already. I heard of people who arrived as late as 9:45 who got them.

                • Poppy Jun 30,2013 1:24 pm || Up

                  My friend who joined me in the ST line at the last minute said the line at the south gate (C? D? I can never remember the letter on that gate) was only just starting to go into the parking lot — so that line was probably okay until about 10:30 or so, because the first 3-4 “layers” of that line generally get the 15K giveaways. The ST line, though, was all the way down the hill and wrapped around the base of the arena at that point.

                  My buddy got there a little after 10 and got one (admittedly with very few left) because I told him of the secret of the suite line.

                  Yes, but now you’ve figured that out we’ll have to kill you. (Also, the suite or STH entrances are the best even on non-giveaway days, since you can immediately get on an elevator and ride up to the West Side Club.)

            I think it was FSU mentioning a few years ago or maybe “gonealookin” that it was always sad when the A’s would finally get a good crown and have a terrible game. not encouraging the casual fan to come again. give aways like th ebobbles are perfect for bringing those people out. getting shafted on the giveaway doesn’t encourage people to comeback. Especially when you see 40 or so bobbles crossing the BART bridge as you are racing through the crowd to get one.

              I don’t see the average casual fan that misses out caring that much. And the rabid fan comes back regardless. I’m not saying you’re necessarily wrong in that some people will be disappointed, but it’s also possible that someone who misses out this time will show up earlier next time to beat the crowd. And there’s something about standing around in a large crowd waiting for something with the excitement it brings that’s either addictive or enhances the overall experience.

            Yeah, I have no idea how this is going to go but I need it to at least be authorized to have certain discussions with potential clients on the corporate side. I could end up doing some deals at some point, though. At the least, having a license will make for a lot more options than I have now.
