No Vince Cotroneo tonight, so we won’t have to listen to him denigrate the achievement when Tommy Milone hits for the cycle.

          A few weeks ago, I went camping with some of my buddies from high school. They were never really into baseball, but they are all Giants fans now, with just one exception (who lives in Oakland).

          • Glorious Mundy May 30,2013 10:07 am || Up

            I felt really good in 2010 for all of my HS friends who were huge Giants fans back in the day, who used to take me to games at the Stick and would go with me to games at the Coli, and who were heartbroken in 1989. They deserved it.

            It’s the rest of them, who couldn’t tell Will Clark from Kevin Mitchell, but who are now constantly FBing pictures of themselves eating garlic fries in the expensive seats at ATundT, wearing far too much orange, and claiming that they were waiting soooooo long for that championship that piss me off to no end.

            • 5Aces May 30,2013 10:39 am || Up

              Exactly. One of my best friends and another former co-wrker are like this: telling Jeffrey Leonard stories, saying Hmmm baby, etc. I hate on them as I would any fan of the opposing team. But at the same time we can be respectful (in fact my friend will be with me at the good seats in a couple of weks, hopefully wearing the green and gold Giants hat I got him for Christmas a coupl of years ago.)

              But all of these folks who know nothing past Brian Wilson and think they are Yankees West can get slow acting food poisoning for ll I care.

                • vignette17 May 30,2013 12:53 pm || Up

                  I never had people who were even happy to see the A’s do well. It was 5-1 Giants territory throughout my Marin childhood and, even if I am younger than a few of you, it was certainly pre-2010.

                • Glorious Mundy May 30,2013 12:58 pm || Up

                  They weren’t happy to see the A’s do well back then either. They just weren’t asses about it. They could appreciate that a day at the Coliseum was a day well spent and that rooting for the A’s was as legitimate as rooting for Giants.

                • dmoas May 30,2013 2:07 pm || Up

                  That’s it exactly. They really didn’t give a shit about the A’s in general. Mostly dismissive about the team without being antagonistic about it.

  5. bear88 May 29,2013 7:08 pm

    As I ponder Chris Young, my rational self says he’s not playing every day, is having trouble adjusting to a new league, hits in streaks, and has had trouble defensively because he’s not a corner outfielder.

    The fan in me doesn’t want to see him play at all, except against Houston.

    • FreeSeatUpgrade May 29,2013 7:17 pm || Up

      The defensive struggles are weird, I could understand a few weeks of adjusting back to the corner spots, but not 53+ games. That gaffe last night was ugly.

          • Soaker May 30,2013 8:56 am || Up

            The rule is 6.10(b) and clearly states that the DH may be used for the pitcher only.

            In re-reading the rule, it reminded me that somebody the other day was wondering why you don’t more often see, say, a left-handed reliever who’s already in the game go to the outfield for one batter while a right-hander replaces him, then come back to the mound. If the pitcher takes another defensive position, the designated hitter is lost for the remainder of the game.

            The only reason I thought that was because back in 1998 I used to have season tickets in 129, right behind the bullpen. One day Rickey came over and was chatting with us and I asked him that question and he told me that the DH could be used for any position, I guess he didnt know either, LOL!

              Yeah, I’m with you on that. There was no ruling on the field to suggest that was the call.

              You and dmoas could be right; we’ll see after the game. For now I’d prefer not to believe that all the umpires missed the interference. Batter to second, runner scoring from first is allowed under the interference ruling.

                It’s exceptionally rare for them to give more than 2 bases. And I seriously doubt they’d make a special case here for that.

                • JamesV May 29,2013 10:07 pm || Up

                  There’s just no conceivable way to say Blanco would have undoubtedly scored on that.

                • dmoas May 29,2013 10:11 pm || Up

                  Yeah, to make that call, they’d have to be able to justify it, which you just can’t so it should be 2 bases. They didn’t call it interfere, it’s the only thing that makes sense as idiotically incompetent as that sounds.

            • ptbnl May 29,2013 10:02 pm || Up

              That’s what the Gnat’s TV announcers said happened, after analyzing it.

              I didn’t see the 3rd base umpire, but even if he did tell Melvin there was no interference I doubt that’s what they’ll say after the game.

    • Soaker May 29,2013 9:51 pm || Up

      Runner on first, ball hit fair over third, rolls into Giants bullpen, fan interferes before Cespedes can get there. Umpire rules that runner would have scored all the way from first had the interference not occurred; it looked much more likely he would have stopped at third.

      What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
      • dmoas May 29,2013 9:53 pm || Up

        No, the ruling was there was no interference.

    • JamesV May 29,2013 9:52 pm || Up

      Blanco at first. Torres hits one that was apparently barely fair over the 3B bag. It skips up as a fan reaches out near the bullpen mound and it clearly rolls up his arm before dropping back onto the track. Figure ground rule double, Blanco at 3B, Torres at 2B, but they counted Blanco’s run. Torres went back to 2B after reaching 3B, fans in front who reached over for the ball were ejected or at least removed.

    • FreeSeatUpgrade May 29,2013 9:53 pm || Up

      Fair ball down the third baseline, clearly and obviously touched by a fan, everyone on the field stopped…fielders, runners…yet the umps ruled either that no interference occurred, or that the runner Blanco who had started on first would have scored anyway. Either explanation is preposterous.

      • lenscrafters May 29,2013 9:55 pm || Up

        I don’t get it…if interference was ruled and the umpire justified that the runner would’ve scored anyways, shouldn’t they also justify that Torres go to third?

        • FreeSeatUpgrade May 29,2013 9:59 pm || Up

          Torres retreated to second of his own accord, apparently.

          That ruling (runner scores, batter to second) is theoretically possible, like if the runner were running on the pitch and was already halfway home when the interference occurred. It just doesn’t seem like that was the case here.

          I also still haven’t seen anything definitive on what the actual ruling was.

    • doctorK May 29,2013 9:53 pm || Up

      Ground ball down the LF line, with runner at 1B. Fan interferes with ball, which falls dead along the wall. Runner from 1B scores. Umpires either ruled no fan interference, or judged that the runner would’ve scored from 1B anyway (which is BS). Note that Cespedes just left the ball laying in place along the wall, and the batter ended up walking himself back to 2B. Security also ejected the fan.

    • ptbnl May 29,2013 9:54 pm || Up

      Fan interference with a runner on 1st, so everyone assumes an automatic double, runners 2nd & 3rd.

      Everyone on both teams took their positions accordingly, the scoreboard showed 2&3, the fan was ejected, and the umps decided to award the run as well.

                  It used to be that for ASGs in NL parks, teh ballot had no DH listed, so AL teams had to force fit their usual DHs into position slots to appear on the ballot. If one looked back I’m sure you could find guys like David Ortiz or Prince Fielder listed on the ballot at 1B.

                  Recently, maybe even for teh first time this year, the AL lists its DH candidates as DHs. Whichever one gets elected will presumably be limited to pinch hitting duties.

          Donaldson passed Longoria in WAR and is higher in all triple slash categories now. Machado is good defensively, but he’s playing at ~35 UZR/150, and he’s probably not THAT good. Regress the UZR and Donaldson MIGHT pass him in WAR. Cabrera is the only one you can’t make an argument that Donaldson couldn’t make the team over.

          That said, it’s an ASG, it’s fine if he doesn’t make it. Chavvy never did. It would be nice recognition for him but we all know Josh is BTYT.

  255. dmoas May 29,2013 11:20 pm

    Wow. They really did rule that he’d have scored. How fucking dumb can you be?

    • FreeSeatUpgrade May 29,2013 11:56 pm || Up

      Holy shit, that’s awful. Really, I’d rather the answer was they just somehow missed the interference entirely, because at least that’ll be a replay-correctable matter some day.

      But as you said before, it almost never happens that umps award more than two bases, under any circumstances. It’s almost a cliche…”and that fan is gonna cost his team a sure run as the umps send the runner back to third.” So in order to award three bags it would have to be not just a marginal judgement call, but super-extra-clear. There is no fucking way that can be construed as an obvious judgement to award three bags. Just a horrible call.

      "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
    • JamesV May 30,2013 7:15 am || Up

      That’s absolutely insane and there’s no defense for it. Much as I hate Sulia, I clicked the link to get what John Shea wrote:

      Crew chief Gerry Davis on the sixth-inning grounder by Andres Torres that went up the third-base line: “The ball went over the bag, I called it fair. There was spectator interference. Whenever there is spectator interference, you award the runners the bases you feel they would have had had there not been interference.”
      Was the decision based on input from other umpires?
      “Brian (Knight) basically made the decision because he’s the home plate ump, and he has the whole field in his perspective, so he made the decision as to whether the runners would score. And if any of the other umpires have anything different on the field, then we would get together if we need to. But we were all pretty sure that was the case. . . . We don’t believe he (runner held at second) would have made it to third.”
      Davis confirmed Bob Melvin’s first argument was about whether the ball was fair or foul and the second regarded “placement of the runners.”
      Knight was asked about his ejection of A’s bench coach Chip Hale: “I warned him a couple times to stop yelling at me, and he did not heed my warning and he was ejected.”
      The pool reporter was the Chronicle’s Scott Ostler.

          • dmoas May 30,2013 9:12 am || Up

            Yeah, Cespedes was there and would have had the ball in hand barely 100 feet past the bag before the runner would have touched 3rd. No way in hell he’s safe at home there.

            • MikeV May 30,2013 9:25 am || Up

              Would have been a really dumb decision to even send the runner

            i’ve been thinking about a non-computer, non-replay way to help umps “get it right” and i think a colored light, like a laser, but much wider, that falls exactly over the plate might work. if any part of the ball crosses over the plate, it would turn that color momentarily. and i realize it’s only a blink of an eye, but, hence the color. a camera flash is just as quick, but you can tell if you had your eyes open when someone was taking your pic depending on whether you saw the flash as red or as blue. (i’m still working on how to get a light to show she height of the zone without flashing a light in the batters’ eyes.)

                • dmoas May 30,2013 12:35 pm || Up

                  We definitely need a computerized ball/strike system. There’s just no good reason not to.

                • AV May 30,2013 1:02 pm || Up

                  the reason is that my system could actually be better. it’s direct evidence. you’re not asking a third party to see something you can’t, that relies on technology that is under the hood and arguable, and then show it to you in a side monitor. you’re seeing it yourself, everyone in the ballpark is, live, and as true as it comes. and if MLB’s resistance against computers is the human factor, umps making the calls and gavelling them in with their attention-seeking pirouettes, this kind of erases that opposition.

                  *i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
                • dmoas May 30,2013 2:10 pm || Up

                  No, I’m not asking someone to look at anything. It’s an electronic system that on the fly calls it a ball or strike with a signal to the plate ump. No hood or subjectiveness. That’s what we’re trying to eliminate.

                • AV May 30,2013 2:26 pm || Up

                  the signal to the plate ump. that’s what i’m saying is the extraneous thing to look at/receive info from. i’m saying, quite literally, shine a light on the thing itself to see it better. you’re saying, have a better instrument see it better and tell you what it sees. still feeling like mine’s better. except i didn’t account for day games. which is when you can try your system if you let me try mine at night.

                  did you read my 11:31 ¶ above? when i read it, it seems to mention both how and why.

                  and my 1:02 says let’s not make the ump look at something extraneous to the play because that seems extraneous. to which you say you’re not asking them to look at something extraneous, just to look at a signal shown somewhere else than the play, coming from somewhere else on the field than were the play happened, that tells them whether the play right in front of them was a ball or a strike. to which i say in my 2:26 that this very signal is the extraneous thing they’d be looking at. to you respond that… you’re talking about balls and strikes. (which we already covered in my 12:28.)

                  in other words, i’m not seeing any evidence that you’re participating with me in this conversation with the same degree of interest or attention i’m putting into it and it behooves me to discontinue it. sorry.
