It has been quite a summer here. And yet, despite everything, this is the first thing that has really made me consider auto-trepanation.

To whomever made that video:
Pretty damn funny.
I would have given him a point or two, except Cabrera likely initiated the hug, and we can’t see Holliday’s face … good stuff.
Aww, thanks. Not quite as funny as this, though.
“They did by letting you be involved.”
OH SNAP!
When do they all take off their clothes and start fucking?

Christ, what a brain hole.

… release?
Geez. RIP, Bill Safire.
No matter where Milton goes, I suspect he’ll still get fan letters. And Jack Marshall will find off-field reasons to vote against him 5 years after he retires (not that Milton’s on-field numbers would justify it anyway).
At what point is Milton just not worth the trouble?
This says that as long as he’s good (2008 good), someone will put up with him (I could’ve told you that, but the article has charts and stuff). It also says:
2006?
No.
Awesome
Ex-A’s management updates: 1, 2, 3
1. Weird. I heard that Peterson left because he and Macha were basically not on speaking terms during his last year here.
2. I think Krukow accused the A’s of doing that during a Giants/A’s broadcast a few years ago, and then retracted it a couple of days later.
What was his deal with Jason Kendall? I can’t remember.
He was being paid through intermediaries by the tobacco industry to molest him
Whoa. Did I read that right? Joe Posnanski was arrested in Switzerland?
13 year olds, dude.
I had thought the Swiss maintained a studied neutrality on that issue.
Your legal opinion is full of holes.
Your joke is a little cheesy.
Have you seen this? I tried, but I kept falling asleep.
No, I haven’t. One of the guys at LG&M made a pretty sweeping dismissal of the docu that I find convincing. I’m a huge Polanski fan, but I also think what he did in Jack’s house was reprehensible. I’m basically agnostic on whether at this point it’s worth pursuing prosecution.
Now that’s Change I can believe in!
Um, wow.
Polanski studied under Woody Allen at the Manhattan Institute. I didn’t know it was involved in this type of stuff.
nitwit Chuck Grassley
Ugh. God, do I loathe Ken Burns.
Why?
Buckets and buckets of sanctimony, cooked narratives with stock villains, ignorance of counterfactuals (or even possibilities of counternarratives), “tastefulness” … he’s Thomas Kincaid for NPR listeners.
But mostly it’s the fucking sanctimony.
I don’t know. He gives good documentary, at a time when documentaries almost universally suck. I liked Baseball and The War. I imagine I’ll like the new one if I ever watch it.
To the extent you’re mad about the “America’s Best Idea” tag, I will say that TR makes my top-5 in significant part because of the Parks.
I have nothing against the NPS, conservation, or the celebration/promotion thereof.
I don’t particularly care for simple-minded sanctimony that spends inordinate amounts of time congratulating its audience for their preconceived notions.
When conservatives complain about “the liberal media,” this crap is the sort of thing that gives them ammunition.
I think there are lots of good documentaries these days. In a weak moment, I might say that we are in the midst of a docussaince.
It’s easier (and cheaper) to put together a good docu than a good narrative feature-length — and a better proposition on ROI for investors/distributors. I’d agree.
Has anybody seen Food, Inc? I’m inclined to invest the time on the strength of Michael Pollan’s association with it, but would be interested in any reactions.
Mostly stuff you probably already know, but well-presented. Some interesting stuff with a woman chicken “farmer” who was willing to go on record about how bad it is despite knowing she’d get her contract with the distributor cancelled. Stuff about the revolving door between big agra and FDA. A very cool farmer in the south (Tennessee, I think).
Block that metaphor!
They’re goin’ to the chapel…
link related to Baseball
The problem is that he is more propagandist than documentarian. I thought Baseball was worth watching, despite having way too much bloviating from the likes of Will and Goodwin, but Jazz actually made me angry. He clearly had no interest in or appreciation for anything from the last 50 years or so, but purported to cover those years anyway in his highly slanted and not terribly accurate way. And even in the parts about the Swing era, he seemed far more interested in his cultural narratives than in the music itself.
I take no position on Jazz.
I thought Woody Allen made Jazz, on a sub rosa assignment for the Manhattan Institute.
This is correct. He is an appalling failure by any standard other than enabling people who are 1)gauzily liberal; and 2) over the age of 80, to feel good about themselves.
That’s too strong (and I think you know it).
Having not seen the new one, I don’t know about (1), but I know it is not a fair criticism of The War or Baseball. As to (2), his ratings are way too high to be limited to seniors.
2 is of course an exaggeration. My parents are big fans… I think 1 is definitely a fair and accurate criticism of The War and Baseball. A further criticism is that they are just not very interesting, although that is not exactly the point.
burbling fatuousness is a nice turn of phrase.
Which would much more accurately describe the review.
It basically lists a whole lot of positives and ends with “but Ken Burns is a jerk, so I hated the documentary.”
I also think there could be a worthwhile debate over whether the assertion “in extraordinary times there are no ordinary lives” is true.
Ken Burns is **** with a big budget.
Good lord.
I didn’t realize Ken Burns was FK’s irrational-hatred boogeyman.
The chief administrator is a talentless hack who thinks he’s funny. Burns is a successful director who has made significant contributions to his profession. He may be a little bit full of himself, but the justification for that is non-zero.
“Irrational” = disagrees with nm. Got it.
Irrational = equates Ken Burns with the chief administrator (among other admitted hyperbole). That’s a flame more than an opinion.
Isn’t The Civil War universally considered to be awesome? (I’ve never seen anything he’s done)
I don’t consider it to be awesome, so apparently not. It has a nice soundtrack. You would be amazed at how little you would learn about the Civil War from watching it. Or maybe you wouldn’t, but I was.
Sanctimony is a wonderful, satisfying term to use. But like NM, I’m having trouble squaring its proximity to “Ken Burns.”
So — in which of its several shades are we seeking to dress Mr. B?
that is a bad definition…. m-w gives “affected or hypocritical holiness,” which is much better.
turn the pig loose
“Maybe even brilliant” is in my irritating phrases hall of fame, sandwiched between “virtually unparalleled” and “long road to hoe”.

1. This is a 16 year-old piece on Ricky Jay that is about 10 paragraphs too long, but is nevertheless kind of fascinating. It contains the phrase “serendipitous microbursts of legerdemain”, as well as the following exchange:
2. Revenue streams are for cowards:
16 year-old, Dude
His Eddie Sawyer was just one of the many reasons to love Deadwood.
Ricky Jay was just creepy wonderful before Deadwood. I’m fairly convinced he’s some sort of mythical creature.
They really should have cast him as Mr Tumnus in the Narnia films.
Here at FK!, we hide behind anonymity to protect us from Not-Coreyation.
It’s sad that the rantings of crazy people are this powerful.
I may need to change my sigline
That would be quite the honor.
I don’t know why those readers would expect coverage of this issue to be different than that of any other one.
In college, I played jester’s bells for the Mischief Candidates.
Rajai Davis is rapidly becoming one of my least favorite players to read about.
Ken Burns and Woody Allen have been paid by the Manhattan Institute to overhype him.
Cue a picture of Rajai Davis, slowly panning and zooming. Suddenly it stops, and Rajai Davis turns to the camera and laments about how little pleasure he receives from stealing a base
I prefer the old, funny Rajai.
