Game 51: getaway day 186

Our boys try to get the sweep behind probably the only pitcher in baseball that I am younger and in better shape than.

      7.05 Each runner including the batter-runner may, without liability to be put out, advance—

      f) Two bases, if a fair ball bounces or is deflected into the stands outside the first or
      third base foul lines; or if it goes through or under a field fence, or through or under
      a scoreboard, or through or under shrubbery or vines on the fence; or if it sticks in
      such fence, scoreboard, shrubbery or vines;

      • andeux May 26,2013 12:08 pm || Up

        7.05 g) Two bases when, with no spectators on the playing field, a thrown ball goes into the
        stands, or into a bench (whether or not the ball rebounds into the field), or over or
        under or through a field fence, or on a slanting part of the screen above the back-
        stop, or remains in the meshes of a wire screen protecting spectators. The ball is
        dead. When such wild throw is the first play by an infielder, the umpire, in award-
        ing such bases, shall be governed by the position of the runners at the time the ball
        was pitched; in all other cases the umpire shall be governed by the position of the
        runners at the time the wild throw was made;

        • Soaker May 26,2013 12:13 pm || Up

          7.05 (g) has extensive comments. This one seems like it applies:

          If an unusual play arises where a first throw by an infielder goes into stands or dugout but the
          batter did not become a runner (such as catcher throwing ball into stands in attempt to get runner from
          third trying to score on passed ball or wild pitch) award of two bases shall be from the position of the
          runners at the time of the throw. (For the purpose of Rule 7.05 (g) a catcher is considered an infielder.)

          What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
          • Soaker May 26,2013 12:16 pm || Up

            The thrown ball didn’t actually go into the stands, but based on the cumulative evidence in these rules, two bases from where the runner started seems like the right ruling. The specific issue might be covered in the Minute Maid Park ground rules.

          It’s two bases from the time the ball was thrown. So catcher throws it, first to second, second to third.

      Perhaps Sergio Garcia would like to prepare a Sunday brunch menu for him.

    I hope the batting practice the A’s have taken the last two games have prepared them for a competent (and very lucky) Gnats team.

    Oh yeah, FK the Giants.

  58. Soaker May 26,2013 2:24 pm

    The only thing is, now the other 3 teams in the AL West each have 3 games in hand vs. Houston.

      I get the concept of a AAAA player; real good in AAA but not quiet good enough for MLB, but Taylor is something else. He seems to be Pujols in Sacto, but I could hit as good as he has when he gets up to the show.

          I think you mean Dan and Jarrod. AJ has been fine.

        9 Ks in 6 innings with 9 groundouts to 1 flyout. Even better is that it’s his second consecutive start with that kind of groundout to flyout ratio. He should be up sooner than later. I’m tired of seeing the starters on this team give up so many homers.

        Gray’s been the lone bright spot in a, thus far, very disappointing year for the notable prospects in the system.

    That third period was the best the Sharks have played in this series.

    • nevermoor May 27,2013 6:43 pm || Up

      I LOVED the end of the 6-5 when the sharks were basically attacking.

        Much more satisfying than game 4. Then, it seemed like the entire 3rd period was played in the Sharks’ end, and I had the impression that the Sharks were lucky to have won.

        • nevermoor May 27,2013 7:03 pm || Up

          Agreed. Now they need to go to LA and play like they did in games 1/2. Both of those they played well enough to win, and Quick is no longer immortal.

              I’m really hopeful. The Sharks certainly CAN win tonight. I just have no idea whether they will.

      The Chron should really just let some cub reporter take over for SuSlu on her off days instead of turning over the A’s beat to Shea. It’s pretty clear that he finds it beneath him to do.
