Our boys try to get the sweep behind probably the only pitcher in baseball that I am younger and in better shape than.

ANybody else’s mind go somewhere else when they hear “lefthander Dallas…”
Any word on that guy?
that is yesterday? at 2 am?
Looks like without a MLB contract he can medicate as he wishes
I think IIRC he is in hawaii right now, so may have been earier.
But that being said…yeah.
Actually, Vince, I prefer the organ music to your attempts to kill time.
This is my favorite part of a 3 day weekend. On a normal weekend this is about when the first thoughts of Monday start to creep in. But when they do today, they will be thoughts of making a big breakfast for the kids tomorrow and beginning BBQ prep.
Oh, nice, we get the hilarity of Chris Carter attempting to play left field this afternoon. I see he’s even started two games in right field this year.
Full field utility player, just like we always thought
Chris wisely waited until Cespedes’ ball stopped rolling before trying to pick it up.
A veteran’s understanding of the battlefield
just plug him in anywhere, doesn’t lose any defensive value
Might as well play him at SS.
My god those are awful unis for the Lastros. This looks like a spring training game.
All of them are awful. Orange is just a really bad color.
See Ive liked the Astro Orange. But god, the side panels, the H star, it clearly is a BP uni that should not be on the field.
agree. (although I have not seen the uni’s today, I think I remember them)
The problem is, the H star as the only thing on the front isn’t very big, and without the colored side panels you don’t have much more than a solid blue shirt. Which is fine for BP, where these belong.
Instead of an H star, I prefer ħ.
woot!!
Not into dual Hilbert spaces?
ok, that was pretty good
I really like them. I specifically loged on to post that I liked them.
They would look better from the loge seats.
Im waiting for the day we see Sexy steal home. With his balls it will be a walkoff in the ALCS or something.
I may have a gearhead for a son. Just turned on the Indy 500 with the lilest Ace in the room. First time he has seen it. He stopped in his tracks and his eyes got HUGE.
My sis & BIL were at the GP of Monaco today. He was super excited about it.
ca’t blame colon for this situation
Looks like he got tired of letting the defense try to do things there
He has decided not to allow any more balls in play.
CY needs to make a throw to third on that play
He seems exceptionally weak when it comes to charging the ball.
Wait, are you saying CY has areas he can improve in?
AMIGO!
I have 10 hours left in my uploading pictures from “Dropbox” to see the kids end of the year performance
now one hour left
The days of the 56k AOL dial-up account are unlamented.
9 minutes
Colon’s high this year is 7 Ks. This has already matched his second highest.
Lowrie bobble it because he forgot what to do with a ball in play
Well, they are hitting the ball well, right?
LOLstros
Well of course that’s the ruling. Stupid umps.
This umpiring crew needs to avoid houston
Worst 3 scoreless innings pitched ever.
Is that a ground rule? ANyone? Is the ball dead?
I don’t know the rule off hand, but intuitively that seems like the right ruling.
7.05 Each runner including the batter-runner may, without liability to be put out, advance—
f) Two bases, if a fair ball bounces or is deflected into the stands outside the first or
third base foul lines; or if it goes through or under a field fence, or through or under
a scoreboard, or through or under shrubbery or vines on the fence; or if it sticks in
such fence, scoreboard, shrubbery or vines;
7.05 g) Two bases when, with no spectators on the playing field, a thrown ball goes into the
stands, or into a bench (whether or not the ball rebounds into the field), or over or
under or through a field fence, or on a slanting part of the screen above the back-
stop, or remains in the meshes of a wire screen protecting spectators. The ball is
dead. When such wild throw is the first play by an infielder, the umpire, in award-
ing such bases, shall be governed by the position of the runners at the time the ball
was pitched; in all other cases the umpire shall be governed by the position of the
runners at the time the wild throw was made;
Yeah, that’s actually the one that governs thrown balls.
is it two bases from the last safe base, or the base achieved as eh ball becomes dead?
7.05 (g) has extensive comments. This one seems like it applies:
If an unusual play arises where a first throw by an infielder goes into stands or dugout but the
batter did not become a runner (such as catcher throwing ball into stands in attempt to get runner from
third trying to score on passed ball or wild pitch) award of two bases shall be from the position of the
runners at the time of the throw. (For the purpose of Rule 7.05 (g) a catcher is considered an infielder.)
The thrown ball didn’t actually go into the stands, but based on the cumulative evidence in these rules, two bases from where the runner started seems like the right ruling. The specific issue might be covered in the Minute Maid Park ground rules.
It’s two bases from the time the ball was thrown. So catcher throws it, first to second, second to third.
stupid ex angel
A cleanly fielded ball!
Donaldson, Donaldson, Donaldson
La Potencia needs to take 3rd again.
This guy needs to just throw the FK’ing ball already. He takes 75 years between pitches and when a guy gets on it triples.
RAWR!
Picked the right time to join the broadcast, I guess
Freiman stakes his claim to continued presence on the roster for another few days.
I must say, crooked numbers next to the “OAK” on the scoreboard go better with lunch than scoreless innings do.
Nate Freiman will be one of those guys everybody forgets when they take those “name A’s players over the last 10 years” quizzes.
Rosales 0-16 till then. huh
oh, that was coco, I have been in and out, I don’t know what happened to Rosales
Are they going to be pissed Coco stole third there?
(edit: reply fail)
After that strong start coming off the DL, Rosales’ OBP is rapidly approaching .300.
I can’t even feign surprise.
I have to give the Astros fans who are there credit. Granted there’s not a lot of them, but this can’t be fun to watch in any way.
is the A’s fan in the crawford box’s there? he is great, goes nuts for an A’s HR
Castro is good. He will be a problem once the Astros stop being horrible.
he’ll be a rockie by then
The full Chris Carter article referenced by Vince is behind the Houston Chronicle’s paywall but can be accessed through the writer’s Twitter link:
Yes. If he could do that, he would be a very good hitter. Here’s the thing, though: He can’t.
And if I could lose 100 lbs, grow half a foot taller, I could be in real good shape…
Because we all know once you’re 26, you are DONE.
Thanks, and go As.
You’re not DONE, but I think it is very unlikely that he will “turn pitch recognition and plate discipline into advantages during the next four months.” I like Carter, but I wouldn’t invest much hope in those things suddenly becoming strengths for him.
Everybody wears camouflage tomorrow?
should be wearing black, as it is a holiday for the dead, not the living
I guess camo sells better
Hey! I liked the black unis back in the day.
as it should have been
The original blacks were great. The later blacks they used weren’t so good.
I was really surprised how many people had bought those stupid hats at the Dodgers game.
I was scoffing at the umpires wearing camo hats and the MLB shop actually selling them too, because of course they’ll try to sell them.
Ew.
Umps too?
They’d be too visible.
Now that we are about halfway through I have to come clean…I was mistaken; Im older than Colon. But I still think I am in better shape (though I wouldnt have 7 ks right now…)
Colon knows there is no need to hustle today. Needs to train Reddick about this.
Can you think of any other 40 year old starting pitchers who consistently hit 94, 95?
Ever? Nolan Ryan?
clemens?
He’s basically it right? I don’t remember Randy Johnson or Clemens throwing that hard by the time they got to that age.
I know Bartolo’s always been a hard thrower but I never thought him to be on the level of those guys and certainly not Ryan.
Fangraphs has Colon’s average fastball velocity at 90 these last two years, and Clemens and Johnson still averaging 92-93 around the same age.
Cool, I must have misremembered.
Johnson was 40 in 2003 and had a average FB velocity of > 92 until he was 44
I saw those radar gun numbers and got a little suspicious. Colon may have found some new drugs.
BOOM
Goes the dynamite.
Give Freiman credit. He’s a young player from AA who doesn’t get regular playing time. Those have been 2 powerful hits.
I was bitching at Fosse (again) when he was talking about how excited Freiman is to be in the majors. Well duh – for one thing, he’s making (I’d guess) at least 8x in the majors than he would be at AAA.
He’s out-earned his wife this year by quite a bit.
She seems to miss a lot of cuts.
so does he
Rimshot!
Would you like Freis with that?
Garlic Freis.
Those Freis are supersized.
In other news, Rosie still sucks.
yup
In other news Chris Carter still sucks.
yup
He’s doing ok, but Carter can still look silly on a good offspeed pitch.
In other news, the Royals still suck.
Now that really is news. It seemed like things were finally starting to point in a positive direction.
They are kinda like the Mariners in how a highly touted farm system keeps producing duds
Huh, Roxy Bernstein sits in with Korach on Wednesday and Thursday. I suggested trying that a while back.
VInce at Dom’s graduation? is that what they were talking about earlier?
That sounds like a pretty significant upgrade, but we’ll see.
I am excite.
I can’t even hate on those Astros fans trying to start the Wave. (Just don’t come to the Coliseum and try it.)
The Royals and Mariners are starting to irritate me.
The Angels aren’t really that far behind the A’s (closer to our team than we are to the Rangers).
yeah, the Angels have won 7 in a row
I wonder if the A’s could get Morse and Brendan Ryan for cheap in a package deal at the deadline.
I wish the promotions department had done the Bartolo Colon Laughing Buddha to go with the Grant Balfour Raging Gnome.
This is a genius idea.
I would buy a shirt…
I don’t like Bumgardner v straily
Yeah, me neither.
So, Nakajima for rosales and Montz for reddick?
And once again Suck Ass tosses the salad.
Down to .306 now on the OBPometer.
what is going on? what is the argument
Just the out/safe call at first base. Porter couldn’t believe the umpire got one right (which he did).
With a kick-save like that, maybe the Sharks should give Cook a try at goalie.
The A’s going 5-2 over the next seven games seems like a realistic goal.
What the hell is going on
We’re becoming over confident.
This is where we need that true outcome from Carter rather than that other true outcome.
Man, nothing like a Sunday afternoon ride on the rollerCookster to turn your stomach.
Young doesnt eat BBQ on Sunday morning appearantly.
Perhaps Sergio Garcia would like to prepare a Sunday brunch menu for him.
Hope he doesnt spit in his cup.
Were Chris Young’s parents not there today or something?
Outdated.
I hope the batting practice the A’s have taken the last two games have prepared them for a competent (and very lucky) Gnats team.
Oh yeah, FK the Giants.
The only thing is, now the other 3 teams in the AL West each have 3 games in hand vs. Houston.
But they can beat the other teams (sometimes)
After last night, presumably:
did he hit a home run last night?
Finishing off a back-to-back-to-back in extra innings down in Tucson.
where was this guy two weeks ago?
Sucking ass.
Rosales just tore a hammy
I get the concept of a AAAA player; real good in AAA but not quiet good enough for MLB, but Taylor is something else. He seems to be Pujols in Sacto, but I could hit as good as he has when he gets up to the show.
Another good start for Gray, too.
Good, something for AJ and Jarrod to think about
I think you mean Dan and Jarrod. AJ has been fine.
9 Ks in 6 innings with 9 groundouts to 1 flyout. Even better is that it’s his second consecutive start with that kind of groundout to flyout ratio. He should be up sooner than later. I’m tired of seeing the starters on this team give up so many homers.
Gray’s been the lone bright spot in a, thus far, very disappointing year for the notable prospects in the system.
That third period was the best the Sharks have played in this series.
I LOVED the end of the 6-5 when the sharks were basically attacking.
Much more satisfying than game 4. Then, it seemed like the entire 3rd period was played in the Sharks’ end, and I had the impression that the Sharks were lucky to have won.
Agreed. Now they need to go to LA and play like they did in games 1/2. Both of those they played well enough to win, and Quick is no longer immortal.
They need to start smelling the blood in the water.
I’m really hopeful. The Sharks certainly CAN win tonight. I just have no idea whether they will.
I hate being exhausted, then getting to bed and having an anxiety attack. I flop around like a fish and get a rash.
This is the Chronicle (John Shea written, of course) “recap” of today’s game…
That was all kinds of a predictable groan worthiness. The only thing surprising is it wasn’t behind a paywall.
COULDN’T HAVE SAID IT BETTER
oops all caps sorry
Terrible. More about the A’s and Giants than the actual game that was just played.
WTF
The Chron should really just let some cub reporter take over for SuSlu on her off days instead of turning over the A’s beat to Shea. It’s pretty clear that he finds it beneath him to do.
Or a fan.
Unpaid, of course.
A new gig for ****?
I mean he does have elite scouting skills.
it’s true. just
askemail him.Thanks, and go As.
Fixed.
Something tells me that what’s-his-name wouldn’t exactly “thrive” with editorial oversight. (they still have editors at the Chron, right?)
No.
This player has GOAT potential.
No, that one LOOKS like a GOAT!
Straily was Baaaaaaah today.
