high shin, under knee, outside edge. probably takes more to reach the pain threshold there than with a true shin shot, but i bet once you do reach pain there it’s one of those real thorough kinds of pain.
*i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
For this spot in the rotation, Anderson has maybe 15 starts in him with the rest of the time on the DL, and Straily just isn’t ready for prime time. If you have other suggestions, please present them.
So at the end of May 15th, the A’s will be 7 games back, sitting at two games under .500. I think it’s time to make some moves.
For Friday, assuming Young comes back, I’d like to see
1. Barton DFA’d for Young
2. Sogard down for Weeks. Green would be an acceptable choice but a Weeks/Rosales platoon is probably better right now, considering Rosales is hitting relatively well. Plus, it’s good to get Lowrie off shortstop 1/4 of the time.
3. Chavez sent down for Dan Otero. Otero throws strikes and keeps the ball in the yard, two things the back of the bullpen can’t currently do.
4. DFA Resop for Okajima
He has the ability to get that occasional hit right when you’re on the verge of getting rid of him, thereby continuing to keep him up. It’s a maddening attribute.
You can make the exact same statement for Rosales. I’d almost want to see a Weeks/Green platoon instead if we could find someplace for someone with the ability to play defense on the bench.
Resop was acquired for minor league filler so I don’t think they’ll have any qualms about getting rid of him if that’s what they want to do. I can support keeping Resop because if you DFA him, someone probably would pick him up and that’s a slight loss in the depth department. Okajima’s opt out is in June I believe.
87 pitch 1-2-3 ish inning.
Gameday made that first pitch fastball to Beltre look terrifyingly fat, giving me the sense that we’re very lucky it was caught for an out.
Straily gets out of the second inning throwing only six pitches. Perhaps fat pitches and desperate prayers are a viable pitching strategy.
shocking as he had all three ball counts in the first
Josh Donaldson: Walkier than we thought!
Dan Dan the plunking man
It was pretty clear that Straily would succumb one way or another.
at least he was creative with the back to back HBP.
Of course the two outs bases empty to loaded is tired, as is the get a head 0-2 and serve up a single.
yawn. Call me when you bring out a tee for Adrian Beltre
I always heard Strailly had a hittable fastball. I guess Kinsler and Andrus can now attest to that.
When people say Straily is hittable, they mean they literally want to hit him.
I can’t decide if it’s less enjoyable to watch Parker or Erik Hiljus part deux pitch.
Hang down your head Dan Strailly
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head Dan Strailly
Poor boy you’re bound for Sacramento
34 strikes, 33 balls.
Average stuff with no consistency of execution does not an MLB pitcher make.
For those of you without a broadcast. Jaso hit in foot and appears to be hobbled to a degree.
Still being tended to
Not the foot, it was a direct shot to the shin bone. You can let somebody kick you there and see how it feels.
Hurts a lot, but the shin bone is a pretty good choice for a spot where an HBP is unlikely to cause more lasting damage.
Are we thinking this was retaliatory?
No, both of Straily’s were off-speed pitches. Plus if you wanted to retaliate over anything you wouldn’t hit a leadoff batter.
high shin, under knee, outside edge. probably takes more to reach the pain threshold there than with a true shin shot, but i bet once you do reach pain there it’s one of those real thorough kinds of pain.
I’ve had someone do that to me. It’s not nearly as bad as people make it sound. Their foot hurt far more than my shin.
Paging Miss Oakland.
Thanks, and go As.
hit in shin. stays in game
How awesome was it to see a catcher stay in the game after being hit in the shin with a fastball, Ed?
he should catch without shin guards now
You can see here in the top of the 5th that Jaso’s thought bubble is a lot of Fuck! Shit! Crap!
Ogando is better than any A’s starting pitcher and Ray still thinks he’s better suited for the bullpen.
HE PITCHED IN THE BULLPEN THEREFORE HE IS A RELIEVER!
Just make an out, Brandon. I can’t take any more Vince right now.
That’s the kind of request these A’s can answer.
The infield defense has been a little squirrelly the last couple of games.
yeah, I am missing mark Ellis. Dammit
Venus de Jaso allows yet another stolen base, but it’s immediately rendered irrelevant when Straily issues another walk to the batter.
You were saying.
Time to plunk someone again, Dan?
0-2 to Beltre? Keep calling fastballs.
donaldson with a little extra on that tag. is that a thing? trying to hit the guy with the ball in your glove? or am i over-reading again?
Jeebus … why don’t we just start each inning with runners on the corners and be done with it.
Jesse Chavez probably is auditioning for the #5 spot in the rotation.
…and it’s over.
I am not sure it is
The only consideration ever given to Jesse Chavez should be how quickly one can be rid of him, certainly not whether or not he should start games.
is there such a thing as a “Mop up starting pitcher?”
For this spot in the rotation, Anderson has maybe 15 starts in him with the rest of the time on the DL, and Straily just isn’t ready for prime time. If you have other suggestions, please present them.
I think Sonny Gray should be given a shot. He has command problems like Straily but he keeps the ball on the ground and in the yard.
There aren’t any clear cut good options but if you only have bad options, you might as well go with one that has a chance to be good.
At this point, I’ll settle for new.
Ha ha ha. Barf.
keep going… but now say the opposite of what you want.
Don’t call us, we’ll call you.
How have I never seen Jesse Chavez’s Gameday photo before now, and how can I unsee it?
Chavez being chavez
Now all that’s left is breaking up the no-hitter.
Yeah, I have the DVR running on the Tour of California but live viewing is sounding appealing.
at least we don’t have to depend of a julio lugo error to turn the line up over one more time to get to the leadoff batter.
Jesus, I listen to that game at work, in this chair. what have i done with my life?
Geez, this game is bad enough to make a person existential.
Does that count as a shut down inning?
Did it inspire confidence?
So at the end of May 15th, the A’s will be 7 games back, sitting at two games under .500. I think it’s time to make some moves.
For Friday, assuming Young comes back, I’d like to see

3. Chavez sent down for Dan Otero. Otero throws strikes and keeps the ball in the yard, two things the back of the bullpen can’t currently do.
4. DFA Resop for Okajima
Please continue to suggest that we send Sogard down when he comes up to bat…but really, I have no argument against any of this.
Rosales is actually hitting well instead of just getting enough hits to stay alive.
Yeah, but only after I’ve complained about him.
I forgot about okajima.
those sound fine to me. Quesions:
1 Does okajima have an opt out in his contract?
2) since resop came in a trade, don’t you think they won’t move him?
Resop was acquired for minor league filler so I don’t think they’ll have any qualms about getting rid of him if that’s what they want to do. I can support keeping Resop because if you DFA him, someone probably would pick him up and that’s a slight loss in the depth department. Okajima’s opt out is in June I believe.
How’s he doing in AAA?
Okajima
Otero
Thanks. And yes please.
I’m not ready to give up on Resop; I doubt the A’s are either.
where was that last night?
No hitter broken up, complete with obligatory “you couldn’t do that last night?” thoughts.
see above
It was appropriate to say this multiple times. That’s how inconvenient it was.
well look at that.
THEY SHOULD DFA LOWRIE
Well done.
i was ready yesterday. then i remembered, all my friends know the lowrie-der. beep beep beep beep beep. beep beep beep. boop boop.
THEY SHOULD DFA CESPEDES
On a roll…
Bravo
THEY SHOULD DFA MOSS
dammit Nelson, why couldn’t you be more like nelson cruz?
Since when can Cruz play defense?
gah. cruzified.
Should’ve kept it shallow like the previous two.
That’s 7 free bases so far today.
maybe they were the 1000th customer
Woo hoo!!! Free icecream!!!
Is he incarcerated? Send for Future Ed!
I say we go for a baker’s dozen.
yep. here we are. mired in the middle of a VC reading of minutiae out of some lucky ranger’s CV.
KK just called this a teA’se.
I think Josh Donaldson has cemented his place as a high-quality defensive 3B.
And Fosse, please stop with the “former catcher” reminders.
How about Fosse just please stop.
If only we had another former catcher waiting in the wings…
Heh.
Yeah, but it takes a while before they get as annoying as Fosse.
That works too.
This one is pretty much on Straily, who seemed determined to pitch badly enough to guarantee a loss no matter what the offense did in his support.
The Rangers were on Cruz control.
