    I think Bartolo’s goal, before each home start, is that the jog out to the mound be the hardest he runs all night.

      I also think he enjoys the big Coliseum foul territory more than any other A’s pitcher ever. The way he luxuriates his way off the field is downright sensual.

                  An out can tie the game in the first scenario. That’s a HUGE difference. Look, I’m a Barton supporter, but he didn’t come through there. And no one is supporting Sogard here or making broad judgments on Barton’s overall value, so stop creating strawmen to attack. If you can’t even admit that Barton can fuck up, then you’re not “being a fan,” you’re being blind.

                • JamesV May 15,2013 2:40 pm || Up

                  Of course Barton fails and fucks up, but he’s been dumped on a hell of a lot more than many other people for one reason or another. It’s reached the point where it seems some people actively root for him to fail just so they can rip him apart.

                • Soaker May 15,2013 3:02 pm || Up

                  Barton is in his 9th season in the organization. He should either be an established major leaguer at this point, or he should be trying to resurrect his career in another organization. It’s almost like a failed marriage with numerous attempts at reconciliation via counseling. At some point, you just need to give up and move on, and in Barton’s case that point has passed.

                  I wouldn’t point to individual AB’s; it’s a broader issue. People who get additional chances to succeed when they no longer deserve them, and then fail in those chances, shouldn’t be surprised when they get dumped on.

                  What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
                • dmoas May 15,2013 3:45 pm || Up

                  How about dumping on him when he gives you something realistic to dump on. Yeah, he’s gotten a lot of chances, but realistically, people are mostly dumping on him because he’s a first baseman without power. That’s really the primary thing people bitch about. While his numbers overall aren’t great, they’re not even the worst on the team nor is it like he’s taking ABs out of someone more worthy of them.

                  Really? You don’t think a K in that situation is fucking up? He battled and saw a good number of pitches, great, but he couldn’t put the ball in play. Yes, he could have had a worse AB, so he didn’t fail to the max, but it wasn’t good.

                  Sogard’s AB was also bad, but I guess I just believe in him less so I wasn’t expecting anything.

                • dmoas May 15,2013 3:42 pm || Up

                  He didn’t succeed, but I hardly see it as fucking up. It was a quality AB against a good pitcher. And yes, he struck out in an inopportune time, but it was on a nasty pitch. Had he swung at a shit ball in the dirt on the first pitch and grounded into a double play, THAT would have been fucking up.

                • Dial C for Concupiscence May 15,2013 3:58 pm || Up

                  I’m not sure that Sogard’s first pitch ground out wouldn’t have tied the game if there had been one out rather than two.

                  Anyway, fine, change the agency. Barton came to the plate trying to do something and got beat. I’m on the pro-Barton side here. Hell, I have a Barton-signed A’s pennant in my room! But I think he failed in that AB. Whether the cause of that failure lies more with the pitcher or with Barton, I don’t ultimately care.

                • JamesV May 15,2013 4:02 pm || Up

                  Yes, of course Barton failed in the AB, but not in the sense it was being claimed. It’s not like Nathan dominated him.

                • dmoas May 15,2013 6:32 pm || Up

                  No is saying he failed. We’re just saying he didn’t fuck up. Unless you’re defining fuck up as any sort of lack of success, in which case you have nothing to complain about because literally everyone fucked up at some point in that game including Donaldson.

                  I don’t want to kill him. He’s still my favorite not-good A. It just makes me sad. A sac fly there keeps us in pie range.

                  Indeed, Barton is not the worst human being in the world, but he is a bad baseball player. Other than the lunatic fringe, I reckon that’s how most people see it.

                • dmoas May 15,2013 3:23 pm || Up

                  That 2 out AB should have been easier given how wild he was and how many pitches had been thrown. He practically walked the bases loaded and nearly walked in a run. And you swing at the first pitch? At least Barton took the count deep and foul several pitches off.

                • Dial C for Concupiscence May 15,2013 3:31 pm || Up

                  Sogard was terrible too, no one is saying he wasn’t. Although, if the order of his AB and Barton’s there were reversed, I wonder if Sogard’s ground out would have been deep enough in the hole to score the run. It looked like Kinsler had to range fairly far to his left to field it if I remember right.

                  It would’ve got a run home, maybe even got through if the Rangers were at double play depth.

                  i don’t know man. seems like if he protects a little more on 2 strikes rather than waiting for a HR pitch every time or thinking he’s better at reading close pitches than the ump, he’d have waaaay fewer Ks.

                It wasn’t “failed miserably” as much as it was a good battle that Nathan won with a nasty slider he got Barton to chase.

                  Which is why I’m not flipping out over Barton not getting a run home there. Sure, we’d have all loved him to tie it up or win it, but he got beat on a quality pitch. That’s going to happen. Another time, he’ll win that battle.

  125. bear88 May 14,2013 10:43 pm

    Excellent way to hit a good pitch. And yep, the no-doubles defense backfired there.

    Downside: It takes the bat out of Moss’ hands.

              This reminds me of a classic recap Jeff had after one of the Mariners games. It went something like: “The first guy the A’s sent to the plate with the bases loaded struck out on a pitch that hit him. The second one wore glasses”

    Well that sucked. Actually a fun game to attend, was moving with alacrity for the first six innings, Bartolo seemed in great command until his one rough spot. And the rally in the bottom of the 11th was exciting too. I so much wanted Daric to succeed, for himself as much as for us fans. Alas.
