I also think he enjoys the big Coliseum foul territory more than any other A’s pitcher ever. The way he luxuriates his way off the field is downright sensual.

Last night the witch told me that the Hamburger stand on the concourse near sec 127 now has super-yummy grilled cheese sandwiches. I did not know about these, which are sure to be a hit with some of my family.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
It reminds me of the days when Coco, Barton, Cust were the only ones expected to do much of anything so the innings when they weren’t hitting were a good excuse to go do something else.
Michael Taylor, ladies and gentlemen…. MICHAEL TAYLOR. Having Michael Taylor on a Major League roster is sort of like you’re ’70s KISS and you’ve got Peter Criss playing drums and singing… despite the fact that he can do neither with any degree of competence, he is still getting paid money to do these things.
Never suck on a Blow Pop with the microphone open.
radio is off, I am getting people to bed. But from the inning and the notes on MLB at bat on my phone I am assuming VInce’s head exploded because Montz gave up his at bat to get the runner over.
I further assume it is continuing to erupt and will throughout the game.

An out can tie the game in the first scenario. That’s a HUGE difference. Look, I’m a Barton supporter, but he didn’t come through there. And no one is supporting Sogard here or making broad judgments on Barton’s overall value, so stop creating strawmen to attack. If you can’t even admit that Barton can fuck up, then you’re not “being a fan,” you’re being blind.
Of course Barton fails and fucks up, but he’s been dumped on a hell of a lot more than many other people for one reason or another. It’s reached the point where it seems some people actively root for him to fail just so they can rip him apart.
Barton is in his 9th season in the organization. He should either be an established major leaguer at this point, or he should be trying to resurrect his career in another organization. It’s almost like a failed marriage with numerous attempts at reconciliation via counseling. At some point, you just need to give up and move on, and in Barton’s case that point has passed.
Not if Barton refused the outright assignment to Sacramento. Which is why Barton accepted the outright assignment to Sacramento, and will do so again when he’s DFA’d next week.

Sogard’s AB was also bad, but I guess I just believe in him less so I wasn’t expecting anything.
He didn’t succeed, but I hardly see it as fucking up. It was a quality AB against a good pitcher. And yes, he struck out in an inopportune time, but it was on a nasty pitch. Had he swung at a shit ball in the dirt on the first pitch and grounded into a double play, THAT would have been fucking up.
I’m not sure that Sogard’s first pitch ground out wouldn’t have tied the game if there had been one out rather than two.
Anyway, fine, change the agency. Barton came to the plate trying to do something and got beat. I’m on the pro-Barton side here. Hell, I have a Barton-signed A’s pennant in my room! Indeed, Barton is not the worst human being in the world, but he is a bad baseball player. Other than the lunatic fringe, I reckon that’s how most people see it.
That 2 out AB should have been easier given how wild he was and how many pitches had been thrown. He practically walked the bases loaded and nearly walked in a run. And you swing at the first pitch? At least Barton took the count deep and foul several pitches off.
Sogard was terrible too, no one is saying he wasn’t. Although, if the order of his AB and Barton’s there were reversed, I wonder if Sogard’s ground out would have been deep enough in the hole to score the run. It looked like Kinsler had to range fairly far to his left to field it if I remember right.
i don’t know man. seems like if he protects a little more on 2 strikes rather than waiting for a HR pitch every time or thinking he’s better at reading close pitches than the ump, he’d have waaaay fewer Ks.

This reminds me of a classic recap Jeff had after one of the Mariners games. It went something like: “The first guy the A’s sent to the plate with the bases loaded struck out on a pitch that hit him. The second one wore glasses”
The Warriors get blown out, the A’s blow a lead and then tease us only to have the Rivercats blow it for them, and the Sharks outplay their opponent yet fail to score a goal.
At least this Hoptimum is comforting, although it itself is a tad over-rated.
deked. i thought we won, given the high five photo on the front page of athletics and that i only got as far as “seth smith scored…” i’m such a sucker for wishful thinking.
*i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
Well that sucked. Actually a fun game to attend, was moving with alacrity for the first six innings, Bartolo seemed in great command until his one rough spot. And the rally in the bottom of the 11th was exciting too. I so much wanted Daric to succeed, for himself as much as for us fans. Alas.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
I think Bartolo’s goal, before each home start, is that the jog out to the mound be the hardest he runs all night.
I also think he enjoys the big Coliseum foul territory more than any other A’s pitcher ever. The way he luxuriates his way off the field is downright sensual.
I just barfed in my mouth.
hubba hubba. you paint a word picture you do.
I read that as “Crisp homeless whites”.
Advice for Michael Taylor: When you get a chance, take a few minutes to absorb the scene on your final night as a major league ballplayer.
I think he did that after a strikeout last night. I am not kidding
Colon shook Norris off? lol! What did he ask for?
fostball
Seconds.
Yeah, I think the preferred terminological is “what did Colon order?”
The shit.
Small fries.
To split the check.
Donaldson has happy feet.
vince says safe
My nickname for Montz is “Nelsun”.
So I guess the scouting report on Montz is just one line: “Can only hit fastballs”.
I’d guess the Michael Taylor scouting report is 20 minutes of hard laughter followed by “Just throw the ball” and another 5 minutes of snickering.
Taylor, whose career batting average is .137, needs to go 6-for-6 tonight to finish with a career average over the Mendoza line.
The Coliseum cheese steaks are solid. And I was born in Philly.
I wouldn’t know. I’ve become a two trick pony: Saags if I’m on that side of the stadium. BBQ otherwise.
Last night the witch told me that the Hamburger stand on the concourse near sec 127 now has super-yummy grilled cheese sandwiches. I did not know about these, which are sure to be a hit with some of my family.
Oooooh … that’s really good to know.
Is the witch just busy? Haven’t seen her around these parts lately…
Nothing good can come off Duke and Stanford back-to-back in the lineup.
Why I never.
Michael talyor is fucking awful.
You know you suck when Adam Rosales should be batting ahead of you.
Leadoff man Adam Rosales scoffs at you
He does something good every time he complain about him so I intend to keep complaining.
And while you were typing that instead of complaining…
Why didn’t we pick up Ankiel for depth?
The “Sprained Ankiel” headline would just be too devastating.
ha!
Wow – that’s one butt-ugly lineup.
It reminds me of the days when Coco, Barton, Cust were the only ones expected to do much of anything so the innings when they weren’t hitting were a good excuse to go do something else.
Talking of butt-ugly, nice to see Lackey getting beaten.
That’s unfair.
Lackey is much uglier than any butt I’ve ever seen.
I’ve seen some beautiful asses in my time.
What about a butt that has been stabbed?
That’s an unfortunate situation.
I want to meet that guy in center field wearing the giant “A’s” suit.
If he has to poop, I wonder if the suit has an A-hole.
If anyone was to wonder that, it should be you.
My night is pretty much complete now.
Beltre should be required to throw that one back.
And I can’t wait for tomorrow when Coco comes off the DL and Taylor goes back up I-80.
Taylor is just…
So very very.
tijuana xolos beat palmeiras in brazil! and for their troubles, now they face the 1-seed in quarters.
So that vaunted Michael Taylor defense never really showed up, huh? Guess I won’t likely see It now.
With this lineup that’s probably it. Oh well, Coco is back tomorrow.
when does someone get back to get rosales out of the lineup?
You probably heard Ken suggesting maybe he should get more opportunities vs. RHP.
Rosales has the third-highest OPS on the team (after Crisp and Donaldson)
You are so wrong 8:03pm lenscrafters. So, so wrong.
Well…
It’s less sensual at the end of a 3-run inning.
More circus-y.
Donaldson’s BABIP is approaching 500
TOTALLY SUSTAINABLE
Betterness Accepted, Believed, & Incognated Percentage?
If we get people on, I think we have Blevins PH for Taylor.
I’d be OK with a sac bunt here.
we were wrong
Talyor should bunt
Michael Taylor…OBP machine.
Oh god, you just walked Michael Taylor.
Excellent AB from Taylor: swing at nothing.
Let us pause and take notice of the time Michael Taylor did not mess up.
Didnt break up the DP.
Blevins would’ve.
Exactly.
FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
I take back any nice thing I’ve ever thought about Rosales
Ohhhhh man that was close
can we get a mulligan call on botch hrs there?
Damn – if Rosales had the good sense to strike out, Lowrie’s double would’ve tied it.
Also, FK off, plate ump.
That’s some incredibly terrible defense by Cespedes there
But Rosales’ HOSE makes up for it!!
Now would be a good time for Colon’s first K.
Or that.
I love it when the contact play fks the other team.
Cespedes played that like he was playing racquetball or maybe Tuesday Night LSD J’ai Alai.
Better than you think he is.
What are the chances Montz can make contact this time?
High enough!
100%!
What chance Miggy plays on Saturday?
Depnds on how they arrange the rotation with the return of Anderson plus the off-day. Tejada has only started vs. LHP.
radio is off, I am getting people to bed. But from the inning and the notes on MLB at bat on my phone I am assuming VInce’s head exploded because Montz gave up his at bat to get the runner over.
I further assume it is continuing to erupt and will throughout the game.
It didn’t work because I need a bedtime story.
once upon a time… he’s in hawaii. the end.
ooh burn. Wait, I love more than one FKr.
When I turned on the TV they were fellating Norris’ “great game”. I was surprised to see he was 0-3.
Theeing eye thingle!
Freiman!
Taylor is 10-for-74 lifetime plus 6 BB so coming into this plate appearance his lifetime OBP is exactly .200.
It seems like so much more than 80 PA.
Mendoza!
So are you saying they should lay off the “BIG MIKE” crap?
Well he is big and his name is Mike, so there’s a certain sense of technical accuracy.
Yet spiritually deceiving.
Every time they call him this, I think of Michael Oher. Then I start screaming at Al Davis for drafting DHB instead of the real Big Mike.
You guys are done pretending DHB > Crabtree then?
I never thought much of DHB, especially since Al needed a tackle that year much more than a receiver.
.210!! Congratulations Michael!!
Maddux running out to say “how the FK do you walk Taylor?”
Career OBP >.100?
Michael Taylor-worse than we think.
TWO walks?
Did we really just pit in 2 PRs and they are Moss and Barton?
Donaldson’s wRC+ for today stands at 658
Totally sustainable
Wash going for the ol’ lefty on righty matchup.
did that yesterday before the norris RBI double
Presumably had there been only one out that would have been another DP?
naturally.
Tell me Doolittle is coming in, please
even with the bounce, enough time for a 5-3 i’d say.
Ray: “if he throws Rosales a fastball hes going to see how far it can go”
[ross throws fastball]
[Rosales dribbles it to 3b]
Me: “Im pretty sure a baseball can go farther than that”
I think he meant off Rosales’ bat.
Really? We’re dropping popups now?
Bear down out there. COME ON.
Hmmm. The lights have taken full effect too. That was pretty bad.
two hands asshole
I don’t think his second hand could have reached it from where he was standing when it came down.
If you plan on using two hands you get your body in position so that shit doesn’t happen
oh lowrie.
Doolittle’s velocity is down. This is why you don’t use your best relievers with impunity during four run leads.
my guess is management thinks the high lev relievers will have wednesday and thursday off regardless
quick vince, check the octane’s eyes. (i think it’s high.)
oof
oh no. he didn’t say that. that was all me. (still oof, i know.) he just did his usual HO mention.
and join us for the next episode of vinny can’t win, when you think he finally came upon a good metaphor only to find out the glove literally did fall off.
Josh Donalson is playing out of his mind.
4-4 … what’s the opposite of a golden sombrero?
i always thought hitting for the cycle.
I guess that has the specificity of the GS (not just any old 0-4/4-4)
Crap
Er, reply fail, but my sentiment stands
oh. i see.
never mind.
JUST HOW GOOD DO YOU WANT HIM TO BE???
I need to see at least 6-4 before I believe
Frasor looks like Mark Ellis.
That could’ve been a lot worse.
starting to smell like pie around here.
What is the pie reference? I’m outta da loop.
pie in the face for walkoffs.
Oh, I knew about that. Don’t jinx it!
walkoff=winning player gets pie in face by Reddick
Unless it’s Moss and he does it himself.
Wrist surgery = pie drama
C’mon, Twiggy.
Pie possibility…
I’d be happy to take the lead now too
AV brought me back, so blame him. ‘NUFF SAID.
He be tossed.
BoMel seems bent on making a run at Bobby Cox’s record.
Close, but out.
Uh Ray, it was pretty clear what BoMel said to get ejected.
No Ray, swearing isn’t an automatic ejection. A direct reference to the ump is. The magic word is “You”
well, fuck.
Exactly. Also, good morning
Anyone read “As they see ’em”?
Top of the mornin’ to yah.
Nice of Bob to leave Chip with no bench to speak of.
And evening, all.
Hey, EM
Hi Em! I now know what you meant about cats and the Terro ant baits. That stuff drys like superglue. I guess I never noticed before if they swatted the dry baits.
According to EC it’s morning. I have to believe he’s an expert on these things.
Hi EM and EC
What about me? The Square!!
Hi DFA, lenscrafters, bear88, andeux, critter, doctork, soaker, AV, elvez, FSU, Ed, batgirl, Jennifer, thunderbutt, ptbnl, beebo, NiP, 5Aces, and no one else!
Sniffs.
I made the cut!!!!
And I cut a bitch!
No way. I’ll cut a bitch- and you’re looking bitchy, baby.
That made me a little bit hot.
You and me both.
:(
Thanks, and go As.
Must be this tall to ride, son.
Hi gurl. Been a while, you must be a neurosurgeon by now!
Bwhahahaha. No. Graduate Friday.
Congrats, luv. You’ll always be a neurosurgeon in my mind. :)
haters gonna hate
Thanks, and go As.

You were in the first comment! Not saying hi to dmoas has never taken so much effort.
And you cost us a game too. I hope it was worth it (probably was).
FKer
Shoulda been in the gamethread sooner
(and hi to you too, even post-game)
Indeed.
Come on with this fielding
Just when I was starting to not want to DFA Rosales at the sight of him.
He wasn’t going to throw out a runner that fast, most likely. (I know. I’m agreeing with Ray Fosse.)
Balfour needs to stop falling behind in the count.
Or throw nothing but breaking balls.
Heh
Time for Balfour to DIY this inning.
Balfour Rage!
FUCK YEAH!
RAGE
Balfour just made Kinsler and Andrus look absolutely terrible.
That’ll do, pig.
Rally
That might’ve been the best Grant Balfour’s pitched in any one inning in a long time.
Please win here, I do not want to see Resop, Neshek, or Jesse Chavez.
Hopefully you get most of your wish!
Just get to Donaldson.
My friend just said Balfour reminded him of the former Angels’ closer’s cockiness (Francisco Rodriguez).
I don’t see it.
FkRod’s cockiness was a “I’m better than you” whereas Balfour is more “I’m going to be awesome or I’ll fucking lose it”
I agree.
OK, late for work again
Tell your boss I said it’s ok.
And that I agreed. You know how you know you’re doing the right thing? When the devil and angel agree.
If you could clear me on the roles here…
Yeah, I’m not terribly clear who’s who either.
It’s not a set back. It’s a Resopportunity!
You mean a Resuckportunity.
Leave it to Fosse to take advantage of any chance he can to mention someone was once a catcher.
The Catcher in the Right, by Ray Fosse.
I can’t find a stream for the game :(
Thanks, and go As.
Count yourself lucky.
Well, Resop just pissed it away.
Well, that was just stupid. Walk him!
Fuck
GRRRRRRRRRRRbage
Balls
Resop is just really bad.
Yup. Close to Jesse Chavez bad.
So bad, even Ray is getting annoyed.
FKing Poser.
Yep!
Resop throwing some tasty BP out there right now.
That second one I knew was gone right off the bat. It was just a fucking fatty over the middle of the plate.
I DON’T LIKE ANY OF THIS
I blame you.
Who else must I greet to make this better??
Ahem.
Fine. Hi V’s Mike and James!
So far so good. Who else you got?
…hi dmoas. stupid barton
Too little too late.
OK, I’m seriously tired of Mitch Moreland now.
At least this one’s unlikely to go 19.
Now I’m resopping into my beer.
Gee Ray, its better for teams to score more runs? Really??
He is certainly a font of wisdom tonight.
If he tells us to tip our hats I will grind my teeth to powder.
It’s becoming very likely with every passing moment this inning, but just the thought made me laugh out loud.
The pie is getting cold, I’m afraid.
Maybe Dan Otero could get a shot.
Otero, FDLS, the list includes everyone but FUUUUUU
Okay. Which one of you assholes pissed in my pie?
What’s that “Rot Adler” ad behind home plate? Sounds silly
Ass Management? Oh, wait.
I don’t know, but I’d like my assets managed. If you know what I mean.
It’s an anagram for Ol’ Trader
I Googled – it’s Japanese. All those viewers waiting to see Nakajima….
I was going to say — at least it’s not the Men’s Este ads we had when Matsui was around.
Who?
It looks as if they’re Japanese. But with that wingy design, it looks as if they have the “Red Eagle” reference not by chance, but by design. Only, it’s badly written
I’m calling it. Home run or double play right here.
Cover your ears, Nathan is swearing
But but but according to Ray that’s an automatic erection… I mean ejection.
C’mon Theth!
Theth ith the thucthessful one!
Uh, that looked like a strike.
Let’s get lucky.
Make up call from the Rays game.
That may be the worst strike call I’ve ever seen.
And yet not anywhere near as bad as Angel Hernandez (spits) replay review.
Don’t say that accursed name
I hates him so much.
As bad as it was, I think it was made look much worse by the camera angle and the pitch type
ugh so close
Gah, I thought…
I really think the no doubles defense here is counterproductive. Would love to get my hands on some Field F/X data
No doubles led to that being a double.
You may be right.
Did you ever look at the one month demo of Field FX they released a couple years ago?
No, I didn’t. Is it still available?
Also, is anyone else downloading Pitch FX data? Downloading is a nightmare now as opposed to a few years ago, connections get shut from MLB all the time. I guess there are many more downloading the data nowadays
I startled my wife when Smith’s line drive went foul.
Game day just let me know Jaso walked.
Here we go.
YEAH great at bat Smitty!
THETH!
Thupendoth!
Who believes in Barton?
Well since Blevins cant PH now…
Sigh
That was painful for my Barton love.
I was on the edge of my seat. Once he struck out I lost hope in the A’s coming back.
It was an unusually strong teAse. That’s for sure.
I guess two runs were too many. While Barton indeed failed miserably, I’d also like to blame Resop.
YES IT’S TOTALLY BARTON’S FAULT NEVERMIND THE FACT THAT SOGARD GROUNDED OUT ON THE FIRST FUCKING PITCH HE SAW TO END THE GAME.
jesus fucking christ
Thanks, and go As.
One out bases loaded is a different scenario than two outs bases loaded.
either way a hit ties/wins the game and an out fucking sucks.
Meanwhile Sogard has a wRC+ of SIXTY SIX this year, and everybody wants to kill Barton because of 18 at bats.
Goddamn I’m so fucking done with this bullshit. It’s seriously the kind of crap that makes me tired of being a fan.
Thanks, and go As.
this
(it’s 1,919 plate appearances, not 18)

And 29 other MLB teams saw things more or less the same.
If a team picked him up, would they have to pay him the $1.1M?
Not if Barton refused the outright assignment to Sacramento. Which is why Barton accepted the outright assignment to Sacramento, and will do so again when he’s DFA’d next week.
yes when he was dfaed
So because he’s been dumped on unfairly in the past (which I agree), we’re not allowed to mention it when he fucks up now without people getting all up in arms?

Yes, of course Barton failed in the AB, but not in the sense it was being claimed. It’s not like Nathan dominated him.
No is saying he failed. We’re just saying he didn’t fuck up. Unless you’re defining fuck up as any sort of lack of success, in which case you have nothing to complain about because literally everyone fucked up at some point in that game including Donaldson.
And it’s a good time to remember how predominant failure is in the game of baseball.
WHATS THE MATTER WITH VOGIE!!!
I don’t want to kill him. He’s still my favorite not-good A. It just makes me sad. A sac fly there keeps us in pie range.

It looked like Kinsler had to range fairly far to his left to field it if I remember right.
It would’ve got a run home, maybe even got through if the Rangers were at double play depth.
i don’t know man. seems like if he protects a little more on 2 strikes rather than waiting for a HR pitch every time or thinking he’s better at reading close pitches than the ump, he’d have waaaay fewer Ks.
oops. sorry. i saw all caps and thought we were revisiting cust times.
asvd
It wasn’t “failed miserably” as much as it was a good battle that Nathan won with a nasty slider he got Barton to chase.
Definitely. That strikeout pitch was filthy.
Which is why I’m not flipping out over Barton not getting a run home there. Sure, we’d have all loved him to tie it up or win it, but he got beat on a quality pitch. That’s going to happen. Another time, he’ll win that battle.
Of course this comes down to DB.
Excellent way to hit a good pitch. And yep, the no-doubles defense backfired there.
Downside: It takes the bat out of Moss’ hands.
Let’s not fool ourselves. barton is now batting just as much for the A’s as he is against stupidity in the world.
If Barton wins this game, I may just log onto AN and get myself banned.
I’ll hold you to that.
dammit – I was looking forward to stirring up shit.
I’ll defend your ban and get myself banned!
wait, that wasn’t right.
One way or another, I’m thinking this ends with Barton tonight.
Or not.
Wouldnt mind a squeeze here.
There is a force at home
Details details, wouldnt it have been cool though?
It would have been awesome
That would’ve been great in retrospect. Barton can’t hit but can bunt.
Oblique: check your email.
My cat is burying her face in her paws. She can’t watch.
I wish I had been your cat.
FUCK
Crap. The game rides with Sogard. Yuck.
K E E B S
LOLZ BARTON NEED MOAR PROTECT THE ZONE
Oh geez – Sogard for Rosales was destined to fail egregiously.
A terrible hitter who’d been on the bench for 4 hours?
No more egregiously than Rosales batting there.
Sadly true.
I could swear I remember Rosales hitting a homer off a closer recently, but there doesn’t seem to be any record of it.
In 2013:
Rosales vs. RHP: .190/.320/.333
Sogard vs. RHP: .237/.301/.289
I’m tempted to look up Milone’s career batting stats.
This reminds me of a classic recap Jeff had after one of the Mariners games. It went something like: “The first guy the A’s sent to the plate with the bases loaded struck out on a pitch that hit him. The second one wore glasses”
Can we please get rid of him? At least with someone like Weeks, there’s a chance of him being good.
PUKING KITTY SAUCY BOAT
That says it all.
The loss is bad. The probability of a Texas win tomorrow is worse.
The Warriors get blown out, the A’s blow a lead and then tease us only to have the Rivercats blow it for them, and the Sharks outplay their opponent yet fail to score a goal.
At least this Hoptimum is comforting, although it itself is a tad over-rated.
Should have squeezed the tying run in. Or given Daric Barton psychedelic drugs so the ball would look bigger. Or something.
deked. i thought we won, given the high five photo on the front page of athletics and that i only got as far as “seth smith scored…” i’m such a sucker for wishful thinking.
You should move up here. Then you’d never news about the A’s at all!
*hear
you’d think either red bluff or marysville’s signals would reach. stupid ridge and its antenna-blocking.
At least he went out on a couple of walks
he walked out on the A’s?! no gratitude these kids. no gratitude at all.
Hey, maybe this would have been a good time to go troll AN after all?
AN is responsible for the loss!
We continue to work, without ceasing to address the problems at hand.
taglined.
Thanks, and go As.
That run on sentence hurts my brain.
Can someone explain how I left a lead and JD crushing the ball and it ends up like this?
What happened to Cook?
What got melvin ejected.
Also Melvin kinda fucked us by PRing and not having someone availible to hit for Rosales
Melvin ejected for arguing a correct (but close) call against Barton at 1B.
Flash urgent: A’s need votes to topple Yankees.

Well that sucked. Actually a fun game to attend, was moving with alacrity for the first six innings, Bartolo seemed in great command until his one rough spot. And the rally in the bottom of the 11th was exciting too. I so much wanted Daric to succeed, for himself as much as for us fans. Alas.
