(This is being posted early so I can claim the title I wanted, and to make some new room for the moves today.)
I’m not liking this pattern of Colon trying to be the stopper. Let’s quit it, A’s. Okay?
ICYMI, Straily will start for Anderson tomorrow, who is being skipped because of that bum…ankle. The ankle’s bum, yes.
Cespedes is reactivated, and in a move that ought to surprise all of nobody, Wells gets the DFA. But, at least Michael Taylor had a few more regular ABs under his belt in Sacramento in the meantime, rather than getting a chance here.
Lineup so far: Crisp CF, Jaso C, Smith DH, Cespedes LF, Moss 1B, Donaldson 3B, Young RF, Sogard 2B, Rosales SS
hung out with a friend last night who, as we were talking about what we’d done during the day and getting into places we’d lived, she mentioned that she had lived in baltimore in the 90s and close to memorial stadium. she said she’d been to a TON of games. i was surprised. i said something like, wait, you like sports? she said, well, not really, but she lived a few blocks away from memorial, and back then, they would stop charging after the third inning, so she and her boyfriend would eat dinner sort of peripherally listening to the game, and if by the time they were done eating, the game seemed interesting enough, they’d walk over and go in. DREAMY!
I’ve entered into the Coli at around the 7th inning of a game – was driving back from South Bay meetings, listening to the game, and IIRC it was the final game of a series against the White Sox. It was a close game so I gave it a shot, drove into the lot with no attendants, and walked into an open gate. Saw the final innings of a sweep!
my cousin did that at dodger’s stadium
huh. i’ll have to time something nearby and try it.
Memorial Stadium was the perfect neighborhood ballpark, just kind of plopped in the middle of thousands of small brick houses, and it had a great unpretentious neighborhood vibe to match.
why do you hate progress?
I also hate our freedoms.
michael taylor in right field one of the boston losses changes the games.
Which Showalter just counters by bringing in a RHP if this situation comes up.
Now that Casper Wells is gone I’m not sure I can continue to be an Oakland A’s fan.
don’t let the revolving door catch up with you on the way out in.
So, I guess if you are a reliever and you aren’t taken out after an inning today you should set up a hotel for the next two weeks in sacramento before you come out for your second inning
Heh.
My guess would be Chavez goes down tomorrow when Straily is called up.
Then on Tuesday they bring Scribner back up, and choose between DL for Anderson, Straily back down, or Parker down.
I forgot about chavez. I am sure he has a place
In Anderson’s last start, the CSN broadcast showed him constantly rolling over his right ankle as he finishes his pitching motion, which led to my exhortation here. It’s a pretty clear reason for why he keeps falling over after delivering a pitch and how he sprained it in the first place. I don’t see why skipping a start is going to help solve this issue when the real issue is him continuing to do it in the first place.
I also don’t understand how fools like Glen and Ray have noticed this problem and the coaching/medical staff either haven’t or don’t see it as a problem that needs correcting.
It could be they have noticed and are trying to do something about but Anderson either can’t or his ankle is too unstable to not. If either of the latter then they should be DLing him until he can.
Apparently they don’t want to DL him yet because he’ll miss 2-3 starts. If the ankle’s still that poor right now, that’s exactly what they SHOULD be doing. I don’t see how missing just one start is going to solve it long-term.
Theoretically, if it is only an acute tissue injury or sprain, one start off could be enough to solve to problem. 8-10 days of resting the joint, that’ll heal up a decent number of those kinds of injury. And of course if it’s still a problem they can retro the DL for most of the 15 days anyway.
Ah, then maybe they’re doing it the right way for now. Either way, it can be retroactive to his last start. Just a matter of how they’d make a corresponding roster move and when.
Straily for Chavez, send down Straily for Scribner, DL Anderson for Straily.
Let’s see if that’s how it goes.
If they do it that way, they can’t backdate the Anderson DL move to before the time that Straily is sent down.
Melvin just told Korach something like “It wasn’t bothering him, he didn’t say anything about his ankle hurting” until the very end of his last start…
Then Anderson is fking idiot.
A selfish one at that.
It is known.
Per Fosse on the pregame, a bunch of the ’73 guys had dinner at Francesco’s last night. I’d bet pretty heavily that Reggie was not among them.
If he went, he probably charged them an appearance fee.
I fell over laughing when Ray praised Francesco’s wonderful “buffett” (pronounced as in Warren or Jimmy).
I’m in 227, row 10. Nobody say anything about cria1’s Yankees hat.
little league day. lots of kids in non A’s hats and gear
How did that happen?
And here I was thinking you were a good parent.
Little league day.
He’s on a team called the Yankees, eh? Poor kid. According to filler video during the Boston rain delay, Coco was a childhood Yankee fan for that reason. DON’T THINK IT CAN’T HAPPEN TO YOU!
Coco turned out ok.
I moved from Boston so he wouldn’t be a Sox fan, and in a cruel twist fate…
6 of one…
Did he have to shave his mustache to play on the team?
Bwahahahaha!
Why do you have to go and pre-empt my blackmail attempts by telling everyone?
Good seeing you today!
You too!
No one’s gonna get any hits today, are they?
So if both pitchers were perfect through 9 and then the game was called for some reason and never made up, would they both be credited with perfect games?
No.
there is a hit. IN YOUR FACE FSU!
I hang my head in shame.
And a nice touch with the pink jersey.
The double flap helmet isn’t helping him.
That is atrocious.
ok, let’s work some milagros, NOW!
Of course their comebacker off the pitcher turns into an infield hit.
All that offseason talk about the large number of middle infielders we had and we still end up having a Sogard-Rosales infield.
I need to do yard work, but I’m trying to wait until the Vince innings are done.
Here we go again.
So today we’re not even going to take a lead before the other team puts up a crooked number.
Theyre picking on Young.
Starting to feel like Jesse Chavez will get some work before being sent back to Sacramento tomorrow.
Sure, Coco. Take the meatball down the middle of the plate then swing at ball four above your head.
I forgive you… this time.
hark! a run?
Getting interesting now.
Pipe down, Eeyores!
BTYT!
wAY TO GO jOSH dONALDSON!
BOOBIES.
Also, are the A’s actually showing some life?
The power of Cespedes compels them!
Bringing Patton in from the bullpen:
[erases comment about how everybody hits better with cespedes in]
but yay! they brought the game back!
That was going well, then Sogard and Rosales happened.
Too true.
I can take one of the dynamic duo but not both. Rosales can stay cause of defensive versatility but Keebs has got to go.
YOU HAD ONE JOB, SOGARD AND ROSALES, ONE JOB.
I would’ve preferred doing the safety-squeeze with Sogard. With Rosales, I’d prefer doing the DFA.
Why do people love Rosales so much, I mean yeah, Ive met him, he is really nice, but he cannot hit! On Thursday at the Coliseum when he came in to replace Sogard, the crowd gave him a standing ovation, I just dont get it!
HE HAS A HOSE
(CT)
And man, what a nozzle…
People buy the Charlie Hustle schtick.
He’s a gritty grinder, kinda like a cross between Erstad and Eckstein.
“the all-important shut-down inning”
DRINK A WHOLE BOTTLE!!
I’m out of booze, dammit.
Urine luck, I have to pee.
It’s funny as a drinking game, but there’s not much worse than giving up runs right after you’ve scored to get back in the game.
of course. it hurst me too. it’s just funny the emphasis he gives it, like it’s the key to something. i think he should focus on the game within the game and talk about shut down at bats. or shut down pitches!
If anybody was actually playing the “shutdown frame” drinking game today, somebody should check to make sure they’re still breathing. Good grief Vince. Even Ken got sucked into the vortex at one point.
Wow
I can’t wait to see these guys leave. Seems like every ground ball finds a FKing hole.
McClouth has been hitting weak ground balls up the middle the whole series. Really wish the A’s had employed some Rays-esque shifts.
Me too.
Is it time to bring back Weeks?
yes. and i’d vote for april 3 though april 17.
Not the first two weeks of Oct 89?
too old. ain’t got the legs anymore.
He hasn’t been hitting well. SLG only .333
woo! seth. smith!
THETH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Smitty!!
Seth Smith succeeds on Sundays.
i wanna hear that in a daffy duck voice.
Sunday, so Seth Smith successfully swings.
We’ve been reading Dr. Seuss’ ABC book. That’s a strong proposed addition.
That’s one of my favorite books in the whole world.
We drove past something called “JJs Ice Cream” on the open house tour, and it turns out we’ve both memorized the J page.
We really could use a shutdown inning.
funny thing, so could they have!
Is Hydunai Sunday an actual thing any more or is Ray just so hooked on the phrase he can’t help but advertise for free for them?
I believe it’s still an active sponsorship.
I haven’t seen promo images/commercials or tagging for it in years. The only proof of it’s existence is Ray.
They showed a graphic for it at the start of the game.
First time in a week I was physically capable of yelling. Not a normal one yet, but Seth gets the FK YEAH!
This is the guy who balks on every pitch.
Wow, why is Schlong not PHing?
You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.
This is why we can’t have nice things.
One-handed? FK me
Unbefuckinglievable.
I’m more than ready to stop seeing Nate McLouth and Manny Machado for a while.
You were the one lobbying for an end to Colon being the stopper …
After today!
Good thing you clarified that.
Walk, walk, walk-off please.
A Cespedes walkoff would be nice…

Welcome back, Yoenis Cespedes.
Who’s for Donaldson ending it here?
Time for some 2012 Schlong.
1st half 2012
Eh – we got 2nd half.
Caught a break on the check swing. Balances out from the other night?
Fuck
Reddick looks like he had his mind up that he was swinging at anything on 3-2. Bad approach.
I was too fed up so I tuned out of MLBTv, probably best I keep it that way.
C’mon Twiggy.
.Hey, some decent relief pitching.
Blevins has been great this year…a far cry from those years when he was DFA’d 5 times a season.
Rosales will bunt here.
That’s it, Keebs.
Hark, a break!
Pedro Strop can’t find the plate. Pedro Strop also can’t find second base.
FAIL
Awesome
Hmm…sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.
WOW

LOL, what a way to win.
Colon didn’t stop the bleeding, but that’s 3-0 for me now. ;-)
Fun ending to a fun game.
Sportscenter should show that highlight with carnival music
That would be appropriate.
Ugliest walk off since the sulk off.
That was beautiful.
Yes it was. And this is why they say if someone bunts, pick it up and take the out.
They had Sogard beat both times, but they just couldn’t get the throw on target. I’m not sure why Sogard is so slow off the bunt. Clearly, this time, it all worked out as it should.
Haven’t seen the replays, but I thought the first one would have gotten him easily with a decent throw, while the second one they needed to rush and probably should have just taken the out at first.
They should have gone to first, but he was D.E.D. DEAD at home with any kind of reasonable throw (because he waited so long to get going). Also, did not look quick at all those last 90 feet.
Sogard’s exploits around 3B were a great illustration of why mostly people should not slide headfirst. Use a classic front foot pop-up slide there, and Sogard scores easily without a throw.
Both bunts were right on top of a defender.
That’s true. The first bunt was terrible. The second was a bit better.
Dear Little Leaguers: pretend you did not see the bottom of the 10th of the A’s/O’s game.
I know it’s not possible but I feel like Cespedes is a 30 WAR player for this team.
He’s magic. Now, let’s find a way to keep him healthy.
Can he be magic from the bench?
Well, if he could he’d be the first.
.657 with him, .347 without him these last two years. So the correct number is around 50 WAR.
Cubanity is underrated
Oh, the Cubanity.
See, now you know why Sogard wears glasses. Protects from pie.
It was a sometimes sloppy and sometimes silly game but I really enjoyed watching it.
Kept this one on the whole way.
Yep, me too, for the first time all season I watched every pitch.
watched some, heard most, there may or may not have been some yelling on the freeway in the 9th, missed the 10th inning, checked the phone and whooped in line at the grocery store.
So, we move back to an AL West opponent…hopefully we can it rolling again against the Angels.
So, what are the odds that Young or Reddick gives us much of anything this year? They both look terrible right now.
Sad that Reddick is doing a Jemile Weeks / Daric Barton impression.
We’ve had too much of that shit recently.
Yawn, a sac bunt fielder’s choice E-5 near base-coach interference walkoff piejob. How ordinary.
It was fun to watch Gags come out of his cleats trying to get Keebs to get up and run.
Agreed
gags is the only guy on the field that sogard can look down on.
Holy crap, we won this?
I have the power.
So that was fun.
I think I was at that one too. Man on first, Scutaro bunts, pitcher (Scott Shields?) threw it down the right field line, game over.
Yep
You should tell the team when you go to games so they can dial up MOAR SAC BUNTS
Can’t say walkoff bunt without thinking about Ramon.
Wasn’t at that one, but it’s probably my favorite moment of the Beane era.
More so than game 4 of 2012?
Nope. Only thing that will beat that for me will be an exciting game in a later round (or winning the WS)
The win over the Twins to finally get to the LCS was a great feeling too, but for sheer in the moment euphoria the walkoff bunt was hard to top. I still don’t have enough distance to put last year’s moments in perspective.
Scutaro off the foul pole is the one that stands out the most for me.
you wore yellow today?
“Gold” stAy t-shirt
saw you in the theth highlight
I wore my “go Ahead, move” shirt. On the back it says: “A’s in San Jose since 4051.”
Best game ever.
Confession: Duck Dynasty is pretty funny.
Excellent game! Just got back home. Never yelled louder for someone to run.
Very much agreed!
what a fanastic game!
you agree that he is home? that he never yelled louder? I need closure!
You will never, ever know.
that is an unexpected response.
No kidding.
The luck-changer: RF bleacher regulars were the winning bid on the bag of Reddick’s hair clippings at the wives’ and girlfriend’s charity auction. Within two minutes of the Ziploc bag of hair’s arrival on the scene, Seth hit his home run.
Wonder how much the chick that chewed the same gum he did put in.
MLBTV just did a replay of Donaldson’s catch in the bullpen yesterday and had the foresight to use Korach’s pxp instead of Kuiper’s.
Maybe a little soon to compare to Chavvy, but Donaldson sure has improved fast around 3B.
yuppers
Stephen Curry is not of this world.
Seriously. He is sui generis as a basketball player. There has never been anyone who can do what he is doing.
That may be a bit much, but he’s playing pretty amazing ball right now.
Thanks, and go As.
I’m not saying he’s the best player ever or anything. That would be crazy. Just that there has never been a great player quite like him. He does things that defy the limits of the game.
Jordan may have a thing or two to say about that.
Jordan was not regularly pulling up for 30-footer in transition and hitting them. He didn’t have Curry’s pure shooting ability, nor his ability to get his shot off when defended by bigger guys. Jordan was obviously (obviously!) the better player overall, but Steph can do some things that Jordan couldn’t dream of.
Reggie Miller.
Thanks, and go As.
cheryl.
Reggie Miller’s close on the shooting, but he couldn’t handle or pass the ball anywhere near the way Curry does.
and everybody is talking about how wonderful Curry’s game was last night (which is was)
Remember when Reggie scored 25 in the 4th quarter against the Knicks — in MSG — and talked shit to Spike Lee the entire time.
Thanks, and go As.
they made a movie about it. it’s awesome.
Was definitely a different era. Dudes seriously didn’t like each other back then. Now they all go hang out at Chris Paul’s house together.
Thanks, and go As.
Amazing game, one of the games that made me fall in love with the NBA as a kid. But, he was overrated because of that one quarter.
Based on your criteria, I find the Curry is overrated because this one game.
See stats posted by James below. Also see games 2 and 3 of this series.
Curry had a pretty good game in the Garden too.
Curry’s a better shooter than Reggie Miller, especially behind the 3-point line.
Miller shot 39.5% behind the arc for his career and his best year was 42.9% in 97-98. The year before he took 6.6 a game but averaged 4.7 attempts over his career.
Curry’s WORST year behind the arc, so far, was 43.7% as a rookie. For his career he’s at 44.6% and this year it was 45.3% while attempting 7.7 a game.
Miller’s got Curry beat on overall FG%, 47.1% to 46.5%, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Curry ends up past that by the time he’s done.
Add in the overall game and yeah, Curry’s better.
He’s no Jason Collins. #STANFORDPROUD
Finally something for Stanford to be proud of!
Hold on a sec and I’ll get you the link to my flickr slideshow of Rose Bowl vacation photos…
I’ll see if I can rustle up some daguerreotypes from Cal’s last trip.

how about UCLA?
Not bad, not bad.
Baron always struck me as a pretty enlightened dude.
Donaldson: player of the week
Probably not better than we think anymore then, is he?
He’s still got room for a few more awards.
:)
Props to Kevin Johnson. The Kings are staying in Sacramento.
Wow. That’s awesome.
anybody going to josh hamilton appreciation night tonight?
i suppose if anybody in this group is going, you’re already at the parking lot. doing… nothing. nothing very surprising at all, anyway. see you as fast as bart can take me!
wac is there
i was seeing if anybody not on FB was going.
it was supposed to be a surprise party for him. but he got there too early!
I wish. All sorts of work this week.
I’ve realized Colon has started all three of the game threads I’ve done.
No wonder I’m 3-0.
just realized? i thought you were targeting his starts…
Only yesterday’s.
Can’t say he’s not a good sport:
Alright, fine, that’s a good move on his part. I will give him that.
I’ll hold off praising him until I’m sure he’s not going to compare himself to Jesus for accepting the candy bars.
It was a Butterfinger, not a MARS bar.
Is that an INRI joke?
I know not what that is. I was going for a Mars, god of war, joke.
nice. i hope he doesn’t hit 3 HRs
It was a Butterfingers not a Baby Ruth.
asvd
this is funny
Well…he’s still no Jeff Francoeur.
He’s hitting like Frenchy this year.
Yeah, so far Hamilton’s WAR is -0.3 while Francoeur’s is 0.2.
Heh!
-.03? when you buy a WAR like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh?
[notices reddick]
oh, it looks good on you though.
Except for the soup in his beard.
Wanna play 19 innings the hard way?
There’s no betting at the O.co…and I never slice it foul.
wanna tie me up with your tie, ty?
dammit! forgot there’s no ties in baseball.
Don’t sell yourself short, AV. You’re a tremendous slouch.
So we finish the eighteenth and he’s gonna stiff me. And I say, “Hey, Selig, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any territorial rights, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.
Win
lol
THEY BOTH HAVE HOSES!
I really really can’t stand this fking tune they play for the Authentic A’s thing. It’s fking gawd awful.
Most of the background tracks they use suck.
True. But that one is the worst.
