The Grill where Stomper sues the GOP 141

The Republican Party facillitated the actions of dirtbag hacker/sextortionist by affording him the perfect cover of an elephant costume on the Gingrich campaign.

This clearly did irreparable damage to the Stomper name brand, which has been carefully cultivated for years to build market value based on innocence and purity. Hella lost revenue damages. Also loss of consortium…who’s gonna get with an elephant with a pervy reputation? Sue ’em!

    We publish all manner of stories here. Some are serious, some are frivolous, some are dumb. I am not going to make a case that the future of the Republic rises or falls on the ability of the general public to watch a video of Hulk Hogan fucking his friend’s ex-wife. But the Constitution does unambiguously accord us the right to publish true things about public figures. And Campbell’s order requiring us to take down not only a very brief, highly edited video excerpt from a 30-minute Hulk Hogan fucking session but also a lengthy written account from someone who had watched the entirety of that fucking session, is risible and contemptuous of centuries of First Amendment jurisprudence.

      A woman was fired from a kindergarten director position in Germany a while ago, because she got divorced from her husband. • dmoas Apr 26,2013 11:08 am || Up

      That’s pretty brilliant. It’s all much more conducive to a real world environment that these students would work in. No one ever gives test/quizzes in the real world, they give assignments and it’s up to you to figure out how best to do them and work within your business to get it done. And just like game theory, it plays out with it’s own set of rules. In his next class, the results could be equally unpredictable as the players change.

    • AV Apr 26,2013 11:25 am || Up

      like he admits at the end, this isn’t cheating, it’s playing a different game.

      what i’m taking from it is that it’s keeping afloat with the way cooperation is changing in the world via the internet (or has already changed and we’re figuring out how to think about that change). all he’s doing is group-sourcing with very few rules, aka, just another day at FK.

      • AV Apr 26,2013 11:30 am || Up

        it’s funny thought that competition is seen as the opposite of cooperation. isn’t competition a form of (co)operation?

        *i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
        • sslinger Apr 26,2013 11:39 am || Up

          I wouldn’t say competition is a form of cooperation, though it is fair to say that many competitions (e.g. baseball) require cooperation in terms of agreeing on the rules of play.

          • AV Apr 26,2013 12:00 pm || Up

            it’s funny because all these words really mean the same thing but we shade them so differently.

            co-operation (operate together)
            com-petition (dictionary says strive together. i’da guessed ask together. “petition.”) (and this one’s funnier because “com” is slightly more “with” than “co,” or am i shading too much now?)
            co-laboration (work together)

            in my mind, i can arrange them as co-operation being the umbrella term that the other two fall under. i mean, in a large sense, cooperation means more than one person acting at the same time toward a common goal. so i’m taking it as an umbrella term that includes people acting together and people acting against each other. take a national election for example. the goal is to have a president. and yeah, the activity is to bring down the other side, but the result has always resulted in finding a prez. so i think of competition as a equilibrium-seeking cooperation–much like two fingers hold a pencil in place in the air by acting against each other from either side, or by acting together both from the bottom.

            *i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
            • dmoas Apr 26,2013 12:09 pm || Up

              It’s not really petition, it’s pete. “with” + “seek”. By itself it’s not really, for lack of a better word, antagonistic. It’s only when you compete against that it creates a rivalry relationship. Otherwise the competition is simply like-minded in their pursuit.

              • AV Apr 26,2013 12:47 pm || Up

                well, pete, petere, would be the root of petition, right?

                but yeah, sorry. i said ask. “ask for” is more precise and in line with what you’re saying, seek. they’re definitely related in this particular word. that aside, i did mean that it’s not necessarily an antagonistic word.

                *i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
            • sslinger Apr 26,2013 12:24 pm || Up

              I think you’re taking competition to be only the organized kind, such as a sporting event or an election, to use your example. Here’s one of Merriam Online’s definitions: active demand by two or more organisms or kinds of organisms for some environmental resource in short supply

              Now, some organisms may benefit in their competition for resources by cooperating against a common opponent, but to me that doesn’t make them the same thing. Maybe opposite sides of the same coin is more like it.

              • AV Apr 26,2013 12:36 pm || Up

                i think i’m calling the coin cooperation and labeling the sides with the leftover terms. i think we agree in the conceptual but not in the use of the labels.

                but i’m not only thinking of rule-organized examples. sperm toward egg. a competition (race) at first hand, but looking at the goal, purportedly the advancement of the best traits in the species (and without getting into what really is better for a species), by competing, all the sperm are collaborating toward that goal, and they don’t even know the rules.

                *i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
              • AV Apr 26,2013 4:13 pm || Up

                been thinking more about this this today. and i think why keep defining cooperation and competition together is that they both involve more than one actor. that alone, to me, makes them way more connected and similar to each other, in terms of ultimately arriving at a self-validating synthesis or outcome, than the difference in how these two multi-actor mechanisms work.

    Merky News has a nifty little interactive housing map showing current real estate values vs the peak of the market. A couple of things that jump out:
    1. The rich get richer – check out Atherton (94027).
    2. In Sunnyvale, check out the differences between 94087/94086, and 94085/94089. The Caltrain tracks divide more than just the roads.
    3. The data for 94303 (Palo Alto) and 94024 (Menlo Park) includes the area east of 101, and are very misleading. There is no way the median value of a house in East Palo Alto $1.1M.

                  They offered it to me. We are negotiating about whether or not I will have to move to LA for more than the 3 months initially and if they will float my rent for those three months. I expect to hear back on my counter tomorrow, but I know they want me and I want them so it should work out.

                  :-)

                Yeah, by the time it was all said and done my down payment was about $50,000. I say that because it was higher than expected due to conflicting appraisals leading to the lender only agreeing to fund around $185k. The side benefit now is a lower monthly payment, which has been pretty important at times.

                • nevermoor Apr 30,2013 10:10 am || Up

                  We had that happen on this condo when we bought it. That was back in the early post-crisis days and appraisers just would. not. return. real. numbers.

                  The problem we ran into was something my agent pointed out to me at the first property we looked at. I’m literally a few hundred feet from the road that separates Elk Grove from Sacramento and he said the same Elk Grove property will tend to appraise around $20k higher than one in Sacramento for various reasons (schools, etc.). So, our comps reflected that.

                  Of course, the third-party appraiser insisted on using comps within the city of Sacramento itself and there was no budging when it came to funding. It was make up the difference or lose the house and have to go back to fighting with other buyers for everything out there.

                  Fortunately I had the ability to get things done.

                • ptbnl Apr 30,2013 11:58 am || Up

                  Part of the problem is that the lender doesn’t get to choose the appraiser any more (which obviously had its own problems) but we were re-appraised by a company from Santa Cruz who had no idea about Oakland.

                  Fortunately with Redfin et al you can pull your own comps now, so I did just that and the appraiser re-adjusted up by $100K (oh, you mean that multi-unit crack house next to the liquor store on 3-lane Oakland Avenue isn’t a good comp for a single family craftsman backing onto a creek?)

                • nevermoor Apr 30,2013 7:50 pm || Up

                  Wow, they readjusted that much?

                  Our last appraisal was equally bad (oh, you mean a 9 month old sale in an exploding market requires adjustment, especially when it’s in a TOTALLY DIFFERENT NEIGHBORHOOD?)

                  FHA can be as low as 3.5% but you will have to pay PMI if you are less than 80% LTV

                  And you’ll get a significantly better rate at 20% down.

                  I also know that PMI used to not have a tax incentive.

                  My rate’s 4.5% for a 30-year fixed, but even that seems a little high relative to what others have been getting for a while. Still, it’s good.

                  My rate is higher (something like 5.5%), but since we only have 4 1/2 years left on our 15-year fixed, I’m not going to bother. Also, our payment is ridiculously low given the value of houses in the neighborhood.

      • JamesV Apr 29,2013 3:49 pm || Up

        This is based on what I just ran for my zip code in Elk Grove.

        Peak: $477,000 (Nov 2005)
        Low: $212,000 (Mar 2012)
        Current: $263,000

        Down 44.9% since the peak, but the low was down 55.5%. Increase of 24.0% since the low.

        My house:

        Peak: $410,000 (Apr 2006)
        Purchased: $203,000 (May 2009)
        Low: $160,000 (May 2012)
        Current: $182,000

        Down 55.6% since the peak, but the low was down 61.0%. Increase of 13.8% since the low.

        Of course, this is Zillow’s estimate.

        Trulia’s estimate puts my house at $200,000 now and that’d be down 51.2% since the peak with an increase of 25.0% since the low.

        The important thing is I’ve never really been close to being underwater and I’m building some equity back up. Not that I’m looking to sell any time soon, but comps in the area for similar places have been around $190,000 over the past few months.

                  And I mean that in the sense that it had a dip lower not long after I got the place, then stayed in the $160-170k range for a while before surging back up in the last few months.

                  If you put any stock into formula-based estimates that are often just reflections of what’s available on public records, that is.
