    Looks like that’ll be Monday’s lineup.

    This is one where hitters are fined for plate appearances longer than 3 pitches.

        Gawd I hope so, I’m getting tired of veggie dogs and french fries…
        I have actually hit the fruit stand, nothing was ripe and it was so cold it hurt my teeth a little.

            I’m so tired of Fat Tire and Ranger, I miss it when they had it at both stands at least, sucks when your first base side.

            I will say Ikes Lair sandwiches are pretty perfect for the ballpark, still good hours after you buy them.

      • Soaker Mar 30,2013 2:23 pm || Up

        That’s four things that can be very good separately, but in one big pile it doesn’t work for me. Especially with the assumption it is actually saucy cheese-like substance.

    • colin Mar 30,2013 1:36 pm || Up

      Right field has been almost as much of a revolving door. Over that same 14 year span, no one has made more than two Opening Day starts in RF for the A’s. Reddick is about to become just the third player to get two Opening Day starts in right. Who are the other two? I’m not counting Matt Stairs, who got the Opening Day start two years in a row, but the first one was 15 years ago.

      Bonus follow up: name the 7 players who got one Opening Day start in RF (again, not including Stairs)

        Bobby Bo is making more than most of the players together or something, no?

      • lenscrafters Mar 30,2013 2:41 pm || Up

        The Bobby Bonilla thing fascinates me. From his wiki page:

        After a subpar season in 1999. The Mets released Bonilla, but still owed him $5.9 million. The team had to get him off their book in order to sign another player, so they worked out a deal: If Bonilla would defer payment for a decade, they’d pay him an annuity worth far more than the $5.9 million. Bonilla accepted the offer resulting in an annual paycheck of $1.19 million starting in 2011 and will last until 2035.

        Who was the player the Mets so desperately needed?

        • Glorious Mundy Mar 30,2013 2:44 pm || Up

          Respect. Bonilla is living the freaking dream, people.

          • Glorious Mundy Mar 30,2013 2:47 pm || Up

            BTW, unsung hero in Bonilla getting that deal? Rickey. I think it was their famous card game that finally made the Mets flip out re Bobby Bo.

          Looking back at the timeline, they had just acquired Derek Bell and Mike Hampton in a trade, and they both were making at least $5 million which was pretty respectable at the time.

          • Glorious Mundy Mar 30,2013 2:52 pm || Up

            Yep:

            By postponing their payments to Mr. Bonilla for 11 years, the Mets freed enough money to trade for starting pitcher Mike Hampton and outfielder Derek Bell and sign first baseman Todd Zeile. Those three players earned a combined $15.1 million in 2000, and the Mets reached the World Series that year for the first time since 1986.

            It’s a tough situation. Maybe in part, he caught lightning in a bottle last year and finally had his MLB moment after so long. I don’t think he’s as good as he often looked, but he sure was a big part of winning the division.

            On the other hand, it flat out sucks that a rough spring led to this, especially with some of the other moves the A’s have made. I’d much rather have him around on the MLB roster.

    I just set up some players for The Game, which is some fangraphs fantasy baseball type thing except that you get to chose a different player every day and the overall scoring is by WAR (not VORP… sorry Bed). Is anyone else doing this, or has anyone else tried it in the past? If others are interested, it looks like we could set up a FK league.

        I think you go and sign up for the overall league. You need a fangraphs account, which is free (I don’t think fangraphs+ is necessary). Then, if you just tell me your screen name, I can add people to the league.

        So I guess it’s not really a separate league, so much as just a leaderboard that we can use to track how we are doing against each other, instead of the entire fangraphs community.

        • colin Mar 30,2013 5:24 pm || Up

          Appelman just posted an article reminding people to sign up, and describing how it works.

              • colin Mar 31,2013 3:25 pm || Up

                It’s just for the leaderboards. They show the results on leaderboards that are identical to the normal fangraphs ones. So, while the overall scoring is based on WAR, you can also see who in the league has the most HR, WPA, etc. Your players’ team just helps for sorting, so you can compare yourself against everyone else who chose the same team. Possibly the prizes that fangraphs gives out for the best two players at each position are actually for the best two players at each position from each team? I’m not sure. Anyway, I just put all of my players on the A’s.

        Yeah, you get to pick a different player every day. I’m not sure why I’m doing it exactly, since my problem with other fantasy baseball leagues is that I don’t want to spend the necessary amount of time and this format seems way way worse.

        • DFA Mar 31,2013 9:21 am || Up

          or you could do what i did and just pick the player that will have the league highest WAR at the position and not think that you can out guess the variance.

              Also, you have a limited number of dollars to spend for the season. For most positions, you have $1000 to spend over 162 games (so about $6 per game). So you can’t just pick a star every day.

    Bob Melvin may have a future in diplomacy:

    Nakajima was disappointed to land on the DL. He’s never had a hamstring injury before, and Melvin said that the A’s want to be careful with it because hamstrings can recur easily if they don’t heal fully. He said he will be OK with a rehab assignment with Sacramento – something Melvin says would be part of the plan- and he will continue to get adjusted to U.S. baseball. I asked what he’s learned so far, and he said, “The style – everything is different. Lifestyle, language everything. But I really believe all this experience will serve as a benefit for me in the long run.”

      That org has one helluva a talent pipeline. They’ve earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to promotions, no?

      • elcroata Mar 31,2013 10:14 am || Up

        I’m not saying that Fernandez doesn’t have the talent. But, he has never pitched above Class A, and is a potential ace of the rotation. I guess I just don’t see them being competitive this year and see this as a waste of a control year

              • elcroata Mar 31,2013 10:41 am || Up

                Not only because of one year of control, but also because of that, especially because they are spending it in a year where they are very unlikely to be competitive.

                Also, because I think this is not necessarily the best development curve for a 20-year old pitcher who never pitched above A and who is arguably the biggest future asset they have. And because the move was made because two players went on DL, not because they were thinking that would be the best way to develop him. If you are a pitcher down and you really need a starter that badly, go pick up Freddy Garcia or something.

            Compound fractures are always pretty gnarly looking, but its a clean break more often than not if I understand correctly.

          • elcroata Apr 1,2013 1:23 pm || Up

            The danger with such displaced fractures is that the sharp edges of the broken bone cut the ligament somewhere. Bone will heal, it will be even stronger then before, I hope all the tendons are OK, though

            I saw a couple of docs on Twitter speculating right afterward that he might have bone cancer or something else bad going on, in order for the bone to snap like that. But apparently not; just landed in exactly the wrong way.

            No – just among those of us who take bodily stuff in stride. This is the second picture of bone break that I’ve seen in the last 24 hours; the first was the mother of one of Spawn1’s classmates, who had a roller skating fall and, as someone who works in a hospital, took a picture of it, which is kind of amusing. That one was considerably less horrible than Ware’s injury though.

            A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.
            • elcroata Apr 2,2013 10:39 am || Up

              Speaking of amusing, when I was 13 I broke school long jump record in my first jump and my arm in the second. I went to a school with very limited budget, so the sand pit was not really meant for anyone to leap into. before the meet started we were still collecting stones and pebbles out of it, and it was really hard. I landed a bit sideways and caught the full impact on the doubled palm of my hand. I remember having a cheap metal armband watch and how it shattered when my bone broke. The break was about two thirds of the way between my elbow and my wrist, not open, but with very, very clear displacement. And then I heard my biology/anatomy teacher calling the ambulance and telling them I dislocated my wrist.

              That was the moment I knew that we were on our own if we wanted some education.

                  heh

                  That arm kept giving me problems, and I feel it now, still. To start with, there was no surgery, but the surgeon who just pressed the bone back in the place (or the vicinity of it). Then, as they put the cast on it and I made it back in time for victory ceremony, the band holding my hand ripped as I was climbing the podium and I hit the railing with it. Two weeks later, I felt good and wanted to test if it had healed so I decided to lift my body while sitting with my legs outstretched (kind like a gymnast in the floor exercise). It hadn’t healed. But I kept my mouth shut, because I knew my parents would be upset, so they took the cast off as planned. Finally on the day they took the cast off, I decided to play soccer and play a goalie, so of course this big kid breaks free and shoots what felt like an 100 mph shot from 5 yards out directly on my doubled palm. I think that hand never really healed properly.

                  To be fair, it wasn’t much of a record. Scholastic sports in most of Europe and certainly in the mid-eighties Yugoslavia were vastly, vastly inferior to those in the US. If you were any good you practiced and competed on the athletic clubs, and school competitions were few and far apart. This specific one was to honor Tito’s birthday and there were lot of kids competing who were not in the active competition in the clubs.
