Any of you FKers live in places that don’t observe daylight savings time? I know Arizona doesn’t, which is why starting tomorrow the A’s spring training games mostly will start at 1:00 not noon. Hawaii does not do DST. Indiana used to not but now they do. They have a strange history with time, between that and changes of parts of the state back and forth between Central and Eastern time. The wikipedia page shows nine different time maps for the state in the last 50 years. The Monday work day after Spring Forward Sunday usually sucks. I’m preparing for suck.
Of course, when baseball and spring are used in the same sentence it brings to mind the single greatest piece of American filmcraft ever:
“Great Scott, right over the wall!â€
“The devil, he sprung himself!â€
Go here for a suitably thorough critical treatment of The Joker Is Wild.
Tiger has a four shot lead heading into tomorrow’s final round at the Blue Monster in Florida. The A’s just lost their game in Surprise; Ryan Cook gives up 2 runs and the lead in the 7th. Big fight in Canada-Mexico game has been going on for last 10 minutes, ignited when our very own Arnold Leon deliberately hit a Canada batter on the very first pitch after being warned. Carlos Zambrano starts in a must-win for Venezuela facing elimination vs Puerto Rico. The North Carolina Tar Heels versus Satan’s Cabana Boys in Chapel Hill NC at 6:00. Good time weekend.
Apparently if you’re suspended at all in the WBC you’re out for the whole tournament, so it looks like Arnold Leon may be back in A’s camp a lot sooner than expected.
This was almost certainly Mexico’s last game anyway. Glad to see he managed to leave his mark on the way out.
Also leaving a mark: the Canadian who was pounding on Alfredo Aceves’ face.
Who was the dude strangling that guy?
Amazingly, it sounds like suspensions incurred in the WBC can carry over to the Major League season, because the series is sanctioned by MLB and the players union. On a Red Sox spring training broadcast, they were speculating that Aceves might miss the start of the season because of his role in that brawl.
It took me a while to link Leon to Arnold Leon who’s in the A’s system.
No suspensions. And they’re logic was “Well neither team will move on anyway…” Ooookay…
I’ve seen many references to it as being the highlight of the game, which is sad.
Ugh. DST. At least there’s only two days of school this week. Whoo! Spring break! with a foot of snow still on the ground!
Isn’t it kinda early for Spring Break? How are sleazy spring break porn makers supposed to get drunk women to show their boobs for tee shirts if there’s still snow on the ground?
Hell if I know. Also, I’m pretty sure no one comes to MO for spring break. I WAS going to go fishing, but like I said, snow, etc. YES, I FISH.
I’ve only fished a half-dozen times or so, but it’s always been fun. Only rod and reel though, never fly fishing, which I’d like to try some time.
Dad and I were going to go snagging. Instead, I’ll probably work for Asshole.
We gonna go fishing while we’re at Alcatraz?
We could try for sturgeon; those fuckers are huge!
We were going snagging for spoonbill.
Aren’t those birds?
Also fish.
Caught one once. 77 inches. Too big to keep.
Thanks, and go As.
Damn! How was fighting that thing?
I was reasonably sure that I had caught an alligator. Took about 90 minutes.
Oh and it was sidehooked.
Thanks, and go As.
what is sidehooked?
Instead of the fish eating the bait and having the hook in it’s mouth, the hook went into the side of its body.
Makes it significantly harder to reel in because the fish will fight a lot more.
Thanks, and go As.
“Salmagundi,” for those who came in late, was a classic monkeyball device, summoning up an obscure word for current use. It’s apparently a cold salad dish with all kinds of whatever thrown into it. Used to mean catch-all grill/game/lounge/whatever thread. “Ma Gundi” sounds to me like it should be the name of a scratchy-voiced bluegrass singer from the 30’s. But apparently it’s actually a village in India, or, um, something less pleasant.
I don’t care if Salma is smelly.
Hat shop in Jamaica Plain, Boston:
Zambrano couldn’t make it out the 4th inning, and PR tied it up 2-2.
Probably 4-5 innings was all he was going to go anyway, I now realize.
Only five days left to sign up to have a life-size replica of yourself made out of gummi.
Life-size? Oh hell. I asume the factory will be working OT to finish my order?
Can I have it done nude?
I thought that was a given.
“I work exclusively in the medium of Gummmi”
Well this will give a non-dirty connotation to telling people to “eat me”
The pics on that page would have made a great Talking Heads album cover.
I dropped by Phoenix Muni this morning for just a few minutes toward the end of the workout. After Blevins threw a simulated inning (probably was scheduled to work yesterday and was rained out), I was startled to see a tall righthander wearing #66 head out to the mound. They reacquired Tyson Ross already? No! YNOA LIVES! He threw one simulated inning to Jemile and a couple other guys.
Ryan Cook is a little frustrated right now; both outings I’ve seen velocity has looked OK but location is all over the map. His Balfour-esque comment to himself after he gave up the winning hit was audible throughout Surprise Stadium.
Mentioning Balfour reminds me: I noticed today that his promo that runs during the radio broadcast (“I’m Grant Balfour and you’re listening to 95.7 The Game”) is just a bit distorted. Probably accident, but I like to think it’s a Metallica joke.
PR caught a huge break there, poor CarGo.
Big plans tonight anyone?
Carolina-Duke game (currently recording on DVR). Hopkins v Cloud boxing on HBO (when a guy older than me is vying for a sports championship, I’m there). Ironing.
Ironing. Oooo. Hot.
I need a nap.
Ouch, part I of that plan sure wasn’t much fun. On to the fight while ironing.
Parts II and III worked out better. Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins, the pride of Philadelphia, totally schooled Tavoris Cloud in a very watchable fight. The guy who played Omar from The Wire was sitting next to the gal who played Snoop in the front row. And I have a closet full of crisply ironed shirts and pants to choose from for work tomorrow.
I did not know (wiki) that Snoop is actually Felicia Pearson’s real nickname, and that she actually was a murderer and drug dealer before meeting Omar (Michael K. Williams).
you know when you mention the wire, it just reminds me I should be working.
Stop that
You could head over to Hampsterdam and take your mind off things.
Spent the afternoon at a climbing wall with Lily, and now mrs ptbnl has a gig in the city so we’re settling in for a cosy evening.
We’re having a dessert date tonight!
We are? I just took off my makeup and changed into pajamas.
That’s fine it’ll be easier to wash off all the frosting!
Get the hose!
Standing at attention.
I never seem to have plans. Things do happen to me. Less and less anymore.
Last week I went to a friends birthday party, then magically ended up at a friends show at the hemlock when I was called back to the homestead by the babysitter
Boo.
And yet are always too busy to get drinks smh.
I know, I know.
My nights end up, putting the kids down.
I’m calling child protection, words can hurt you know!
Now hold on, he may just be euthanizing them.
As long as its painless and they’re still smiling.
They think they’re getting ice cream afterward.
Strawberry no doubt.
day drinking it is then
i like it
i feel like there was a lot of it today when in actuality there was just the one beer and one wine tasting flight.
pick a day.
Mrs. Aces is an hour into teaching a class here at the house. I stayed here instead of taking the little Aces out like I normally do. Was hoping I could sit in, but instead have been a gofer the whole time. I finally gave up after the third time squeezing my back to my seat.
But in a little bit we can breath and unwind :-)
<3
Fate Brewing was nice for dinner tonight. Limited menu, limited beer selection, but if pizza, salad and microbrews will satisfy you that was pretty good. The best beer selection in Scottsdale is still at Papago Brewing at Scottsdale Road and McDowell; was in there a few nights ago.
I haven’t made it to Sleepy Dog Brewing in Tempe this year and likely won’t. There will be a strong bias toward Mesa/Tempe once the A’s move east in a couple of years.
I went some place in downtown San Jose after the cops memorial thursday and had a sour beer.
I liked it (it was called something something edward, a little too cutsy for the name, but I was drunk already). I am not sure I would like it again, but it made me question my beer drinking.
Thanks for the recs.
Putting the kids to bed and then a toss-up between writing a proposal and falling asleep on the couch.
I know what I would do if I were you
The Sac Redhead just left, it was pretty fantastic, but Im tired. I think Im going to stay in.
I took Spawn1 up to a viewpoint to see if we could get a glimpse of the comet flying by. Unfortunately, too much haze in the direction of downtown Portland, but it was still fun to be out. The fact that it was even a possibility to see a comet in March in Portland was incredible enough. We spent the vast majority of Saturday outside, either in the yard or walking/biking around the neighborhood talking to people we hadn’t seen since last September. I even got a little sunburned on my scalp. Sunday morning was back to cold and drizzly.
at first I thought, “OH NO!” then I realized it said “taylor”
Do the A’s have any good Michaels?
michael CHoice. I am worried that he may be injury prone
I think it was a broken hand which seems to have not damaged his hit tool, I wouldn’t worry, yet.
I always worry
You really don’t wish a damaged hit tool on anyone.
Hehe
Oh yeah, he’s awesome.
At least he wasn’t washing his truck.
That’s a Cal excuse. Stanford guys go with the gum thing.
That article reads like a eulogy, poor dude.
Sure does. Hopefully the KNBR work (and Stanford degree) have him positioned well for what ever the next step is.
but we are reminded that SHane Peterson is from the Holliday deal. So yay!
How does one cut themselves removing gum from their mouth?
He’s 6’7″ and it got cut by a light fixture, I’m guessing he was doing an overhanded throw?
I think he needs to be cut from camp for being stupid.
At least it’s not sunblock.
Shallow pool….
Had no idea Cespedes’ post-Cuba family issues were so complicated, nor that they were bothering him so much down the stretch last season. Now mom and 13 others who left Cuba with him in 2011 are in the US. Mom and son Yoenis Jr. still live in Cuba.
We’re back to Spring Training Weather after that little dip the last couple of days. If you like your baseball sunny and hot I think this is your week to come to Phoenix.
Depends on what I decide for 2014 but today is possibly my final A’s game at Phoenix Muni. I first came down here for spring break in 1982, which was the A’s first year at Phoenix Muni after swapping with the Giants who went to Scottsdale. It must rate #4 on my list of ballparks ranked by games attended, with Candlestick and San Diego Jack Murphy ahead of it.
thanks for you dispatches.
I didn’t know you’d been to lots at the Murph. I saw one game there, in 88 or so.
My mother lived in SD for a few years late 70s-early 80s and I spent a couple summers down there. She was close to the stadium and I think general admission was $1.75. It was the Dave Winfield, Ozzie Smith, Rollie Fingers, Gene Tenace and then a whole lotta suck era.
Great ex-Islanders like Bill Almon and Juan Eichelberger.
hmmm.
1- coli
2- dodger stadium
3- big a
4- warrantless wiretap
5 safeco
6 kingdome
7 yankee stadium.
I don’t remember if I went to the murph. I lived about a mile from it in 88-89.
I haven’t been to a lot of stadiums I guess
me neither.
1. Raley Field
2. Coliseum
3. whatever the hell they call the AAA stadium in Kenner, LA
4. Union Stadium (Sacramento City College)
5. Comiskey II
6. (tie) Wrigley Field & Phone Company Park
1. Coliseum
2. Metrodome
3. Metropolitan Stadium, Bloomington
4. Pandahatten
5. Candlestick
6. Raley
7. Milwaukee County
8. Snodfart, Cal, Camden Yards, Angels Stadium
9. Kingdome, St. Louis, Reno Aces aka “WHAT the FUCK is THAT?” Park
The only parks I’ve been to more than 5 games are the Coliseum, the Stick, Veterans Stadium in Philly, and Aloha Stadium.
that would cut out Yankee stadium for me
I might’ve been to more than 5 at Dodgers Stadium, now that I think about it. 5-6 there and 4-5 at Anaheim, perhaps. Twice to Yankee Stadium.
I’ve been to the old Met in Bloomington, the Stick, Warrantless Wiretap, and the Twinkie dome over five times. Possibly the Astrodome and Coors but I doubt it.
I don’t think the stick makes it for me. WW, though, for sure.
If I haven’t done it at Comiskey it’s because I just barely missed.
It’s sad. I think that I’ve probably been to both Fenway and US Cellular more than I’ve been to the Coliseum.
Fondest to least fond
1. Coliseum
2. Old Yankee Stadium
3. New Camden Yards
4. Dodger Stadium
5. Phone Booth
6. Jack Murphy
7. Coors Field
8. U.S. Cellular
9. Shea Stadium
…
154. The Stick
Coli
Safeco
PGE Park (Now Jeld Wyn Field of the MLS)
The Big Asshole
Phonebooth
Dodgers Stadium
The Stick
Yup.
is it my anti giants prejudice? that mlb 13 “it’s a video game, you moron” commercial kinda makes posey look like a jerk, right?
Haven’t seen it yet.
oh right. you watch on computer.
i’m at my sister’s today. she has cable. it’s a wonderland of ads i’ve been happily unaware of.
Whenever I see 5-10 ads I fear for the future a bit.
A little, but he’s sort of hard to dislike.
Couldn’t disagree more. I like it.
Fosse just said that the A’s lineup is set.
I really don’t understand that.
He must’ve meant today’s lineup is set.
I just marked a couple thousand comments as read
That’s probably for the best.
Sounds like an awkward start for the A’s infield. And now the docs are looking at Anderson.
oh for fucks sake
Anderson removed in first inning after covering on an odd play trying to get a runner going to third. Ball hit by Pennington got through Donaldson on an E-5, then Anderson covered as the AZ lead runner Eaton went from 2nd to 3rd. Sounds like maybe he twisted his neck?
Ack!!! He’s suffering from bad geometry!!
At least it isn’t an oblique
who flew in for the game, incidentally
Yes, his wings were still flapping when I met him at Phoenix Muni. We enjoyed a postgame adult refreshment together.
Anderson’s injury didn’t look too serious. He’s one of the worst athletes I can recall seeing, and when I saw him slide feet-first into third base while trying to catch the throw and tag the runner, I didn’t think much good would come of it.
Yougottabekiddingme!!!!!!!
come on with this
Korach points out that the AZ coacking nstaff is like an early 80s All-Star team…Kirk Gibson, Don Baylor, Steve Sax, Matt Williams, Alan Trammell
I thought they eliminated the coking staff once Ron Washington left.
Strained right trapezius (neck/upper back) muscle for Anderson
Is he on his deathbed, then?
Being a True Athletic he’ll fall out of his death bed and sprain something.
Sounds about right.
USA blows a chance to score sending the guy from 3rd on the contact play. 0-0, Canada coming up in bottom of second. Winner advances, loser eliminated.
what happens if jp arrencibia is the hero?
Fuck, I guess I gotta get my funeral suit drycleaned.
He’s so doughy I wonder how much he actually works out beyond throwing sometimes.
His words aren’t comforting, I’m scurred.
I thought he dropped a bunch of weight this off-season (best shape of his life!)
edit: 25 lbs
Hrm, guess i missed that, STILL GOT HURT!
He has less padding now. He should have trained with Colon this offseason.
Holy carp that’s a lot of weight, he couldn’t have had much of a regimen if he was able to take that much off.
Psh. That’s like one week for the biggest loser folk.
Really digging Lowrie in ST, he just doubled in Daric (5-3 A’s), hoping Weeks/ Sizemore can get it going again and defeat the ‘Barton Mirage’.
I just have a bad feeling Barton will rake all spring then turn into a pumpkin during the regular season.
2012: Needs moar Owsley.
canadia is keeping this interesting.
and my parents keep asking the rules. but hey, first time watching sports together since june 1986.
Neat!
good job, USA.
I feel like I would watch more of the WBC if they could work three-game series into it somehow. Also if they would put it on a channel I get.
i like the 1-gameness of it and how pitching rotation takes a different angle this way. shakes it up a little, to see what’s actually a part of the game and what’s just a crusty tradition taken for granted. just like how the heightened importance of run differential put the spotlight on that other issue yesterday.
i think all sports could benefit from different deployments of the same teams or same players in different teams, in different formats.
I just think it would be cool to see, for example, the USA vs. Cuba or D.R. vs. Japan play out over a series of games. It would let story lines develop, and enmity build up.
i’d want that as a different, additional tournament. one that takes place over months, like the champions league. or… (but i mean and) why not a champions league?
I love that idea. The analogy I was thinking of was Davis Cup tennis.
Never happen, TV/money way too strongly tied to MLB.
Of course, but I’m fantasizing here.
if we continue the fantasy, baseball will keep growing worldwide, at some moment other countries are going to want a tournament like this and organize it. and they might say to the MLB, this is the format, these are the dates, take it or leave it. the US might leave it for a while (kinda like it does the WBC), but after a few rounds of baseball glory going to other places, it’s going to want to stake its claim too.
I don’t know about that. Without the major players in the game, I don’t think it stands a chance. And since a lot of those players would be tied into MLB teams, it’ll be more difficult to pull off.
i’m totally hedging the fantasy still, but it might gain its own weight and not need MLB players. the ethos for organized international competition, amateur or pro, is really strong in the rest of the world, while totally under the isolationist radar here (men’s field hockey anyone? why, the euro club cup is coming up in two week or so!). dominance of the sport isn’t necessary. interest is. did you know argentina came in second in the 2012 southamerican cup? i mean, look at these chumps. i bet they can’t hit for crap, and run into outs more than they have bang-bang plays at the plate. and yet…
http://www.beisbolmetro.com.ar/index.php/component/content/article/29-showcase/356-seleccion-argentina-bicampeon-sudamericano-2012.html
whoops. read that wrong. bicampeón = TWICE champs! not 2nd-place champs, which is vicecampeón.
are those the gauchos korach is always going on about?
must be!
It’s strong in the rest of the world, sure. But out here, not so much. If you’re expecting MLB’s interest, you’ll have to get the U.S. interested it in it. As it is, there’s only pocketed interests throughout the U.S. for international sports and even then, it’s less about a team U.S.A. and more a team “Wherever I’m/my familia is originally from”. I’m not saying some sort of international league play wouldn’t be fun to watch, but it’s a difficult task to pull off.
oh yeah. that’s the right parallel.
Sympatico
Looking back I don’t think anyone would have disagreed with my statement the LL was way smarter than **
It was close when Salb918 was contributing.
what ever happened to that guy?
Got too short to reach the keyboard.
Heh
yeah I said that july of 10
I agree then
Republica Domincana – Puerto Rico currently being shown on ESPN proper en Espanol. Cue nativist meltdown.
Mike Aviles a lo profundo
Heh, tremendo!
I’m watching it in Japanese, pretty strange.
The spanish language announcer has quite a HR call.
I believe the color guy is Candy Maldonado.
I watch much of my baseball on the japanese feed.
Cuadrangular para Aguilar.
Woo Puerto Rico!!!
Great atmosphere in San Juan. They should hold the whole tournament there.
Always saw people playing baseball over soccer 5 to 1, it’s huge there!
Only thing bigger is Cockfighting ( w/ chickens you dirty fks) probably.
They should have left the Expos there.
IKR!
That would have been awesome!
les/los expos
hiram boccachica stadium
Obligatory Bocachica Wow Wow
Ugh Cano…
this
Is there some kind of seeding for the next round, or is this game just for bragging rights?
I think group winner plays Italy, second place gets the USA. It’s double elimination in the next round, but you’d still rather play Italy.
its for seeding. One team plays italy the other plays the US
Tejeda in.
Hanley injured?
Not that i know of.
He’s not an A
DAMMIT
You guys are going to bring MikeV to rage or tears.
Both.
Thanks, and go As.
It kind of looks like you.
So Joe Torre had Adam Jones bunt today with two on in a 0-0 game, against a barely AA pitcher. What a dummy.
He also benched Giancarlo Stanton for Shane Victorino.
DR just pulled a Hamilton.
Damn you Miguel!!!!
Drama at Buck Shaw.
LOL ROY MILLER.
Thanks, and go As.
That was really dumb.
Thoughts on Bush III?
Jeb hitting every talk show tonight can only mean so many things.
His notion of history treating W kindly is really sweet but what planet is this guy living on?
Always felt bad for the guy, well as much as one can, for the way W took over the ‘mantle’ for presidency which many thought was his.
Definitely odd for how long he signaled he was happy just being a Governor.
I know it’s early but over / under on his chances of winning the primary?
His reversal on immigration was a stupid decision. He hit a lot of populist/moderate notes when I saw him speak last month. However, there is no way he makes it though a 16 primary unless the far right splits itself so hard.
Katy Perry. FKing awesome.
Thanks, and go As.
He will probably not be available when the A’s get to pick, but I am rooting hard for the 3rd baseman from North Carolina to become an Athletic.
The “WHO YOUR COLIN MORAN?!” is an once in a generation potential
I’d buy that MORAN jersey.
I’m too lazy to post the obligatory “get a brain, moran” pic.
Plus, I don’t think the A’s have had a Tar Heel in the lineup since Walt Weiss.
Who you calling MORAN?
While the name is awesome, that profile sounds ugly. Potentially a solid regular with little star potential? Likely to move to 1b? Ugh.
Why yes, I am watching honkbal.
Coming soon to a city near you.
i was excited till i saw the prices.
this is free though: http://www.eteamz.com/BAVBB/calendar/
So, I’m friends with a couple, and the other day, they told me the story about how they had met through a personal ad a long time ago. So, I went to the library and looked through old copies of the publication the ad was from, found the ad, took a picture of it, and sent it to them.
That’s awesome!
That’s very cool and I am sure they will enjoy it.
Mrs. Aces and I were so young when we met that she was still in the “collect every momento” phase of life. We still have a box of all sorts of stuff. I think my favorites are the map to her house she gave me so I could pick her up for our first date, and a love note on the back of a McDonlds pizza order form..because come on! its a Mcdonalds friggin pizza order form!
Best…Conclave…Ever!
Have yourself a nice, all-expense-paid trip to Club Feb, Kwame.
omg!
tv today!
tyson!
Tyson being tyson. 3-2 to reddick (1b) walks moss.
Smith three perfect sliders one fouled, 95 fastball-ball fast ball ball, but reddickl picked off at second
it kinda looks like Mr. Finley has offered each player $100 to grow a beard this spring.
ASVD
win
Ahahahaha.
Seachickens gave up a 1, a 7, and a mid round pick next year for Percy Harvin.
So Harbaugh called his brother and got Anquan Boldin for a 6th round pick.
LOL.
Thanks, and go As.
HUZZAH!
That’s fucking brilliant.
6m against the cap tho
Which is what they will save by Akers and Haralson being gone.
Also I would be somewhat surprised if he doesn’t restructure.
Thanks, and go As.
and I bet Manningham is cut as well. Saves more money.
Thanks, and go As.
I would be fine with this. I don’t see his knee being normal again.
Hopefully he went to Adrian Peterson’s knee doctor.
Thanks, and go As.
If Manningham rushes for 2000 yards next year, I’m gonna be confused as hell.
He’s not planning on restructuring based on the reports I’ve seen.
Yeah, it’s not an unfair contract.
Don’t care. He’s a scary-good receiver. Particularly around the goal line.
Then why did he only have 4 tds last season?
I think its a good move for sure. Brilliant? eh. It expends most of this years cap room on a 33 yo receiver with a history of not playing full seasons whose team didn’t want to keep him. Honestly I would have rather gone out spent the 1 and given victor cruz a bunch of money.
Yeah. His RBIs were shitty too.
Cruz and Boldin are similarly good. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/wr
Your point was essentially that Boldin is good at hitting with runners in scoring position, so bringing up that he didn’t have a lot of RBIs is warranted. This is especially true because baseball analogies suck when applied to football because football is less luck driven with regard to context. Boldin had a good quarterback on a good team that scored a fair amount, its not like he didn’t get plenty of opportunities to score tds because of context.
further you did nothing to address my points about A opportunity cost with cap money or B his age.
My point is that TDs are a shitty individual performance stat because it relies on a bunch of other factors (i.e. having Ray Rice reduces your opportunities). Better ones are available.
Opportunity cost is always there, but your suggestion was to give up a hugely valuable resource, and more cash, for an equivalently skilled receiver. This is a clearly better play.
His age is fair. He’s not going to have 5 great years. I’d definitely be interested in seeing a projection system’s output for next year, but I’m not aware of any very good ones.
The Niners receiving corps is going to look even worse especially if Crabtree is going to be as greedy as I think he is moving forward. The niners would get team control of a young asset, not an old one and could structure the contract well.
Cruz is a RFA. They would have to make a FKing huge offer to make NY not match it.
Thanks, and go As.
Cruz would have meant a bigger cap hit and giving up a #1 pick. Same reason they didn’t target Percy Harvin, the cost in draft picks plus the guy wants Megatron/Fitzgerald money and has migraine issues where he missed a third of the season last year? That’s a significant risk for Seattle. They’re gonna be having serious cap issues in 2 years.
They aren’t in a position where they need someone like Cruz or Harvin that is mid/late 20s. Crabtree is 25, Manningham is 26, Davis is 28, Williams is 24, LMJ is 23, AJ Jenkins is only 23, hell even Ted Ginn is only 27
Thanks, and go As.
Manningham has no knee, Williams has no knee AJ Jenkins is a bust Ginn is a FA.
Jenkins/Ginn I’ll grant you. Discounting both of the other two is pushing it.
And the point right now is to win the SB next year, not worry about our roster in 2018.
Disagree on all counts. Granted, Ginn is likely gone but it feels like he’s been in the NFL for a decade and he’s only 27.
I think the point right now is to build a sustainable winning franchise. Look at New England as an example. They don’t go sign big splash free agents or trade away high picks for players. That’s the shit that the Eagles, Jets, and Redskins do.
Thanks, and go As.
Hes an top tier player at a position of long term need which also coincided with the position of highest rate of draft busts. I would be spending a 1 round draft pick on a WR this year or next anyway.
It also keeps Crabtree from being your only receiver worth a damn when negotiating with him next year.
New England brought in a younger Randy Moss. I don’t think sustained winning can happen (hell, even the Pats have had trouble and they were the first real salary cap dynasty)
Moss was 30 when they got him, but he had also quit on the Raiders and came crazy cheap because he was at odds with the franchise.
Thanks, and go As.
AP had no knee either. They’ll get fixed.
Jenkins is not a bust. Not yet anyway.
Thanks, and go As.
And Babe Ruth hit 700 hrs on a diet of hot dogs and beer so clearly its not a big deal if thats all a baseball player eats.
Baseball analogies suck when it comes to football. You proved your own point there.
Thanks, and go As.
No, your making a idiotic point about how there was this one freak of nature that recovered from an injury so everyone will. its below you to make that argument.
Do you really need a fucking list of professional athletes that have recovered from knee surgery?
Thanks, and go As.
You pointed to the most outlying case there is. Thats the reason everyone was fawning over AP’s recovery because it was so rare and so unique for a player to be that healthy right after knee surgery. If you want I can list every player who was never the same again which is a pretty extensive list, and it wasn’t like Manningham was a world beater to start out with.
Not really. Plenty of guys have injured their knee and recovered in time for the next season. NFL athletes are pretty much ALL outlying cases. They’re freakish athletes who are bigger and stronger and generally much healthier then average schleps like us. They recover faster than we do.
Thanks, and go As.
And you cited the most freakish of the freakish as your example.
The idea that you just get better from knee surgery isn’t supported by the data.
I cited the most recent.
Thanks, and go As.
parker being hit hard. Curt Young out to the mound
WAGD!!!!!!
Thanks, and go As.
Now, If travis buck hits it hard, we take him out

Some magazine publisher has just bought a mailing list with my name on it and decided that I’m the target audience for free subscriptions to both Architectural Digest and Seventeen. Hmmm.
it is odd, but not really wrong
It’s The Devil’s Time, Upgrade.
What an awesome obit that is. When I die I hope to be remembered as even one of “ladies’ man, foodie, natty dresser, and accomplished traveler” like this guy was.
hey, so… going back up to oakland in a couple hours. and to my routine. which is more about the IRL FK’ing than online. though that only means, hope to FK you IRL real soon! 4/1 is around the corner–wooo! i think i’m going to one of those colonel 1886 rules games, probably the one at mosswood, though i’d go to one in GG park to meet anyone. that xolos idea is at >50% probability. i have a phone and you know someone who has my number. i’m on the FB and you know someone who FBs me. you kept me unbored the last two days / keep yourselves unbored as much as you can!
xo,
AV
I look forward to seeing you Opening Night if not sooner. Please FK around here more often too, if there’s some enjoyment you can derive from it. I know I sure derive enjoyment from your prsence.
from time to time, to be sure. especially if we go on a 162-game winning streak, as i predict!
Found you and friended you on FB. Post here too though please.
[looks for “like” button]
The Oakland Colonels are the official team of many bleacher stalwarts. I haven’t been to a game yet this year, but I will.
I have caught bits of some games at GGP. it looks fun
I’ve been to a couple of the vintage league games at Mosswood, super fun, hit me up if your going!
The A’s saved their annual spring training klunker for my final day in town. Ah well, the weather was perfect in Peoria and we got to see numerous bonus A’s (Ross, Buck, Street, Petit).
Nice FK representation today with oblique, Dogfather and Dogdaughter in the house. BTW in reference to the Vintage Baseball discussed above, oblique used to play in that but he has retired.
where were you seated, and did you get near a ball?
they showed many a’s supporters on the SD broadcast
oblique and I weaseled our way into the front row behind the A’s dugout. We were looking at the back of Bob Melvin’s neck all day. Also we were immediately behind an effects mic on top of the dugout so you may have heard a few of our snarky comments. The Dogfather clan was just to our right.
I only got one ball on this trip, and that because somebody whistled a line drive which nailed the guy right behind me and fell at my feet. I handed the ball to the guy’s snickering wife.
i will look again. i am sure you made it to tv. I was looking for oblique but didn’t see him. I was working after all
I think we got into those seats about the start of the 3rd. We were about 4-5 seats from the left end of the dugout, looking from the field. oblique’s gold jersey should show up well.
I was in and out of my office around there.
speaking of the mic. on the padres broadcast the ball was sounding crushed, not just the galvez HR, but everything. was the sound of the bat markedly different?
I am not talking about volume, but the crack of the bat sounded different to me.
Sometimes I get sad when I think Edwin Encarnacion could’ve been our 1B…
I argued for him being kept over kouz.
It does some balancing of other failings.
Wow Cuba eliminated…
best players not participating
it would be awesome to see a real Cuban team
I’ve very much not been around here lately but LOL:
Awesome!
E for effort, and T for nice try:
