Today is a good day. Working on lots of projects and I don’t have to leave the house, either! Yesterday I almost got into a fight with some idiot thug outside the grocery store by my house, and today I’m still a bit emotional about it. I tend to be hypersensitive for a while after things like that happen, and I don’t need to go out looking for trouble.

I haven’t listened to the game at all today. According to Gameday, the A’s have scored their five runs on a bases-loaded HBP, another bases-loaded HBP, a bases loaded walk, a third bases-loaded HBP, and then on a single.

Proof that there is such a thing as an enjoyable article by Bruce Jenkins: Local baseball players’ love affairs with their gloves.

Neshek uses a decaying nine-year old glove from a defunct manufacturer. Mike Gallego went back into Candlestic k after evacuating in ’89 to retrieve his. Mike Krukow puts his glove on every day at breakfast.

Vince made a decent call on a Norris homer, but it turned out it was hit by Freitas.

That was funny. “And that was….not hit by big Derek Norris.”

I haven’t seen the word “gracious” used by a non-realtor in a long time

"There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"

It’s a phrase my best friend uses in contexts like “shall we drink the beer out of cans, or would you like a glass for gracious living?”

Usually when I come down here they decide it’s time to lose 6 in a row so this is a nice change.

I think my opinion of Salt River Fields is a little higher today because I was easily able to FSU my way into Row 1 just beyond the A’s dugout. They also have microbrews from the local Four Peaks establishment. At Phoenix Muni yesterday it was Dos Equis or Blue Moon.

Even from ~150 feet the HBP of Sizemore was quite audible. He stayed in the game for another half-inning then departed. That would suck a lot.

I took the kids to the Tennessee Valley Trail. The hiked almost the entirety of the 3 mile round trip with a minimum of fussing. I was pretty impressed.

Now they are asleep and I’m fucking tired, but I have some things I need to do. I really just want to sleep.

That is impressive. Any hike with my crew requires a significant amount of fussing just to get out the front door.

The traditional ST ascent of Camelback Mountain was completed this morning. I’m sure EC could have done the round trip in about 30 minutes, but it took me a little over 2 hours to haul my winter spare tire to the top and back.

The clouds have departed, today is brilliantly sunny and warm, perfect for losing fly balls in the sun, though with a 100% chance of slegna.

I just looked at the Camelback Mtn website and it looks like a number of the trails are closed until fall – or is that old news from Summer 2012? Do you have a specific trail you recommend doing? I think we’d like to do that on our trip, seems like it would be beautiful.

You have to hike up the Cholla Trail from the east side which is open all the way to the summit. The north side trail is closed. Parking is along Invergordon (64th) at Chaparral; walk north from there to Cholla Lane, then west on that street a few hundred yards to the trailhead at the westernmost point of the golf course. The trail is fairly gradual until you get to a saddle about 2/3 of the way up; after that you’re using your hands some to climb and your butt to do a little sliding on the way down. There are a lot of hikers on the lower part but traffic does ease some on that upper stretch.

Sounds awesome. I’d be interested in hearing how the trail and the surroundings have changed over the many years you’ve been doing this hike,

I didn’t start hiking that when I first came here 30 years ago; it’s a relatively recent tradition. The surrounding area, which is fairly close to central Phoenix, has always been relatively high-priced and hasn’t changed too much; everybody has their acreage, their huge swimming pool and their tennis court(s). It’s the outer parts of the metropolitan area, particularly on the north and west, that were still desert 20 years ago and now are completely paved over.
