The Lounge where you can wear my hat. 343

Have the Oscars ended yet? I haven’t seen that much singing and dancing since going to acting camp as a twelve year old…the difference being we were entertaining.  As always if you post in this lounge a Los Angeles  Angel of Newark/Topeka will lose his wings…

    Looking at my Oscar predictions I didn’t do very well but I did get darn close with my length prediction. I said 3 hours 34 minutes and I guess it was 3 hours and 35 minutes…only 3 of those hours were MacFarlane making sexist jokes.

      Other things that would be good for the A’s…A Bill King clone…A catcher who at least hits his weight…more beards…Anderson being healthy all year…Moss and Donaldson being good enough…A naked Lew Wolff bobblehead doll day…Cespedes finding his destiny as the chosen one…our first World Series trip since 1990.

        • MikeV Feb 25,2013 5:24 pm || Up

          I can see both sides of the situation. Yes, he did get FKed by several HCs and OCs, benched for guys like JT Osullivan or Shaun Hill is just kind of crappy. It’s unfortunate that he got a concussion and lost his starting job, but he actually lost his job to a guy that is better than him.

          Plus, he’s got like 50 million dollars in the bank — so, frankly, I don’t think that the organization “owed” him his release or anything like that. Guys lose their jobs all the time. Aside from that one year with Turner as his OC, Harbaugh friggin MADE him. He should be glad that he’s got teams after him now, cause 2 years ago nobody wanted him.

    I need a new A’s sweatshirt. My top priority is that it be thick and warm…thin sweatshirts are useless. Next biggest want is that it say OAKLAND on it, and next is that it be partly or mostly gold. Notably, you cannot buy a sweatshirt that says OAKLAND on it via the official site. Of the ones they do offer, this is probably my favorite:

    So I’m quite willing to pursue non-official channels. Anyone have any suggestions?

              So? They only really care about corporate dollars. I’d guess they’re spending their time and money on that instead of the brand itself. Not saying that’s the best way of maximizing said dollars, but it’s what they’re doing.

              • DFA Feb 27,2013 12:55 pm || Up

                If the team isn’t desirable to the public eventually the corporate dollars will dry up too. Corporate dollars flow because people want to go the the games, so a corporation can spend a little money to impress a client. If the clients don’t give a fuck they corporate money won’t be there.

                • Kay Feb 27,2013 1:56 pm || Up

                  Any Bay Area sports team needs to reach out to corporate partners regionally.

                  In the A’s case, Oakland-based corporations will not be enough. A dearth of Oakland-based corporations does not need to be seen as a liability, as long as there are enough regional partners.

                  \"Weren\'t you already aware the Kay is already writing everyone\'s story? We\'re all just characters who believe we are real. Things make more sense now, don\'t they. Be honest.\"- DMOAS
                • dmoas Feb 27,2013 2:03 pm || Up

                  Getting corporate folks to want to go to the Coliseum, especially having them travel some distance, is no small task. And as a result, it’s going to cut into your bottom line since there’s less of an incentive for them to pay top dollar for an experience that’s sub par.

                • FreeSeatUpgrade Feb 27,2013 4:21 pm || Up

                  That is so right, and so incredibly important, and also largely ignored (or at least not remotely adequately addressed) by all three of the Oakland-based teams. Of the three, the Warriors are probably the best at marketing to corporations regionally.

                  "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
                • dmoas Feb 27,2013 6:27 pm || Up

                  Food for thought, but if three separate, independent teams that play in the same location all fail at this, perhaps it’s not the teams?

                • FreeSeatUpgrade Feb 27,2013 6:41 pm || Up

                  No, it’s the teams. The A’s fail because they don’t try (and for at least 10 years have made a deliberate point of not trying, lest it undermine their migratory ambitions). The Raiders fail because their insular organization won’t admit they’re bad at it and need help, and because they’ve earned themselves some awful negative brand association. The Warriors succeed, more or less, but not as much as they should be able to based on their stalwart attendance base. In their case I think lack of continuity through ownership transitions has also hurt.

                  "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
                • dmoas Feb 27,2013 7:13 pm || Up

                  Let me ask you, what do you actually expect from marketing to corporate folks? It’s kind of a nebulous expectation to do better without defining what they should be doing, how much it costs to do it, and what’s actually gained from both ends of it (the team and the corporation).

                • andeux Feb 27,2013 8:51 pm || Up

                  To be fair, it’s also easier for the Warriors since they’re also the only one that’s not a #2 team in a two team market.

                  TINSTAAFK
                • dmoas Feb 27,2013 1:56 pm || Up

                  The A’s have been pretty static in that regard. Not up, not down. And the reality is any marketing/ad dollars spent would at best result in nominal gains (likely wouldn’t even achieve that). Short of something that’ll bring a large enough influx of revenue so that they go from havenots to haves in the MLB revenue sharing system, there’s virtually no incentive to do anything more than maintain the status quo which is exactly what they’ve done.

    Ok. I’m in a Minneapolis hotel after my flight was delayed and I missed my connection. I have a weird pain under my ribs and in my shoulder. It’s particularly bad when I take a deep breath but better when I burp. Wtf?

    • FreeSeatUpgrade Feb 26,2013 6:09 pm || Up

      Nurse U says it sounds like pleuritis…have you had a chest cold recently? Pleuritis is an inflammation of the pleural layer, the fluid-filled lining around the heart and lungs. Helps maintain equal pressure internally. If it’s pleuritis death is probably not imminent.

      Nurse U also warns that chest pain can be serious and if you’re concerned you should go to the ER. Shoulder pain isn’t encouraging. Do you have an impending sense of doom? shortness of breath? Fingers turning funny colored?

        • brian.only Feb 27,2013 12:30 pm || Up

          I’ve decided to stop watching, pretty much everything I like about the comic has been stripped out or poorly translated to the TV show.

          Why did they have to make bigotry, sexism, and racism such major themes in the show when its pretty minor to non-existant in the comic?
          Shane should have died the 4rd episode, instead we wait 3 seasons for Tyresse easily one of the best characters in story.

          Completely fked up Andrea, one of the most compelling characters in the whole story.
          Glen’s the only thing they’ve gotten right so far and now he’s getting messed w/ too (anger issues?).

          I understand it’s ‘based’ from the books, but if your going to stray – improve it, don’t dumb it down and apply Hollywood stereotypes at every opportunity…

          Bleh, fuggit…

          • dmoas Feb 27,2013 12:43 pm || Up

            I’m not really sure I’d say the show has anything to really do with bigotry, sexism, or racism. They certainly aren’t really major themes. They had a couple of moments early in the first season and that’s basically it. And even then it was mostly just as an aside. I don’t disagree that some of the changes they’ve made have been questionable and they’ve trashed some really good characters. But then they’ve added/boasted up a couple of good characters as well.

            • brian.only Feb 27,2013 12:54 pm || Up

              Really?
              Merl is the embodiment of all three, he’s pretty much a vehicle to introduce the issues to the show, even worse he’s portrayed more as a badass hillbilly than a degenrate.

              • dmoas Feb 27,2013 1:59 pm || Up

                Not really, he’s just schmuck who’s out for himself. He’s basically treats everyone, including his own brother, equally like shit. Very little of it’s racist or sexist, just egomaniac assholery.

          The shows airing now are still considered to be part of Season 3, per the increibly annoying pattern shows like Breaking Bad and Mad Men have established, breaking a “season” into two sections separated by 6-9 months.

                Well, it’s the trade off of having them take 2 or 3 week breaks several times a season with re-runs or spending a full year in between seasons and losing their audience. Not saying it’s not annoying, cause it’s sure as fk is.

            exactly. I just can’t think of that many career DHs.

            Both Giambi and Cust had more than 2500 PAs I believe. Maybe that includes some not as a DH but they were primarily a DH?

            Answers: Jacque Cousteau, Giambi, Thomas, Gomes, Stairs, Matsui, Mike Sweeney

              I misunderstood then. I assumed 2500 PAs as a DH, that’s a good 4-5 seasons worth assuming 600 PAs a year.

      Played for the A’s in the last 10 years, or has more than 2500 PAs at DH in the last 10 years but may have played for the A’s prior to 2003?

        They could have played for the A’s before 2003.

          HIlarious, but it just disgusts me how much play this whole situation is getting. Like we’re supposed to care that he’s not going to keep wearing his red shoes anymore. FK the motherfking p.o.p.e, emeritus or not.

            Eh, when something happens for the first time in 700 years, that’s news. Also the salacious bits about blackmail and the gay mafia within the Vatican are hard to pass up.

              “Holy shit” would have been a better title than pope emeritus.

                  Howdy. Finally, school tomorrow. It’s been a week. I’m so lost about what is due. We’re testing over TWO subjects we never spoke about in class.
