DLD 8/24/2009. Why are we here? 34

Ratto thinks the A’s are Ziggy with a cloud over his head.  And I don’t mean Brad Ziegler, though he might have a cloud over his head too.

The A’s play the Mariners tonight, for anyone who’s so completely bored with life that they have to tune into something so meaningless.  There will also be reruns of House on some random channel I’ve never heard of.

Recent discovery:  Apparently Mork and Laverne actually dated.  Seriously.

    In college, I played 5-string fretless bass for Grisly Thunderhead.

      My sister’s cat is named Bass, and sometimes frets like a dunderhead.

      He’s actually very good in How I Met Your Mother (which is fine compromise-tv)

        HIMYM is fantastic. Jason Segel is my hero.

          I’m not going to say it’s Mad Men, or The Wire (hi monkeyball), or Breaking Bad, or Rescue Me, or The Office. It is, however, one of the better “standard” sitcoms out there.

            I actually prefer it to The Office (which is now my second favorite sitcom). I quite like The Big Bang Theory, too.

            LOST is probably my go-to series right now.

        I’m not sure how you interpreted that as an anti-NPH post.

        Tortured logic, perhaps?

      Holy shit. Hope there’s still duct tape, spam and bottled water at Safeway after work.

    Christ, what an Aschburner

    Now, despite what Al Gore and his legions might tell you, the climate in Minnesota hasn’t changed nearly enough since the Dome opened in 1982.

    I think higher education is purely extortion

        Seriously, without higher education I’d have no way to sneer at the huddled masses.

    I like Louis CK:

    “I don’t like people who are successful, I don’t like people who are good at their job, and I certainly don’t like people who are likable.”

    (I don’t, however, care much for R. Gervais.)

      I’m not real fond of Rickey, either, though Patton Oswalt makes me laugh very much.

    • mikeA Aug 24,2009 8:42 pm || Up

      I agree on the first two, but I like likeable people. And also Gervais.

      Why has no one ever told me to watch Pooty Tang before a few weeks ago?

        I’m pretty sure I’ve extolled the brilliance of Pooty Tang before.

    I just want to say, props to DFA for continuing to bring it at **. If the “chief administrator” was less of an irredeemable fuckup, he’d be the next front page writer.

    Two good articles from the New Yorker this week:
    James Surowiecki on how some behavioral economics phenomena make selling health care reform more difficult.

    And a longer article about how hard it is for NYC teachers to be fired for misconduct or incompetence.

    Laverne was hot to trot.

      Aren’t both Laverne and Mork gay? Like I know they’re both not “out”, so to speak, but aren’t they both gay?

      • 5Aces Aug 25,2009 6:09 am || Up

        I always thought that Laverne was a straight dude. Didn’t realize he was gay…

        I’m 99% sure Laverne is — Mork, though, I think is polymorphously perverse.
