The Lounge where there’s always one more tomorrow. 515

        I am of course sad that you’ll be hitting the road for a spell, but the drive-by Bediness which will signal your return later is such a delightful prospect that it will carry me through.

            It was so rainy and nerve-wracking and fun!!! We went down on the field after the game–it was a blast. And I have to say, the band can be a bit goofy, but they were pretty good last night. Particularly after the game when everyone was down on the field celebrating.

            One of my best friends from Stanford is turning 40 in three weeks, so about 10 of us are going to the Rose Bowl to have a Rosebowl/40th party. I’m sooooooo excited!!

        I got Legos from an aunt and uncle when I was 3. One of the best gifts ever. It was before they had specific themes. They just had pictures of a hundred different things you could make, and it was up to you to figure out how. Or to make your own creations. I managed to figure out how to make Buck Rogers’ fighter from the TV show, as well as something that vaguely resembled a star destroyer.

            My parents gave mine away to some kid or another, I don’t even know who. But apparently that kid decided that building stuff was less fun than dropping the Legos down the heater register. I wonder if a 35 year old Lego set, if it were still intact (and mine still had the original packaging) would have much monetary value. I know that the sentimental value for me would be off the charts.

            • PDXAthleticsfan Dec 6,2012 9:19 am || Up

              My mom saved mine (mostly space Legos) in her basement for years then handed them over when I finally seemed to be settling down. I handed them over to Spawn1 last year. He’s asked me a few times to build the original designs, but the instructions are long since gone.

              A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.

                There’s also a board game called Forbidden Island that my family loves. It’s an interesting concept: the players are a team, with different roles assigned. The Island starts to sink, and you all either work cooperatively to survive and win, or you all drown/lose.

              Yeah they slay, I think the first 2 EPs and album w/ Tyondai are the best but I’m a huge fan of his solo stuff which is really worth checking out, the new one Central Market is really out there though and I oscillate between loving it and hating it in a Mike Patton/ Frank Zappa sort of way.

              Do you remember Ent?
              I seem to remember they might have been from Sac, great band.

              Sad thing about Slint is apparently they are all total assholes now, my buddy worshipped them and had the chance to open for them a couple years back on their re-union tour and was crushed to find it out the hard way- being totally shit on after sharing how much the band meant to him ( gods pretty much ) while he was first getting into music.
              I know it’s tough to judge them on one nights experience but they really hurt the feelings one of the nicest guys I know.

              David Pajo has done some really great stuff post Slint, I think his Papa M stuff is my fav.

                  Pandora’s associations are sometimes spot on and sometimes leave my head scratching. The thumbs up/thumbs down thing can work, but I worry that if I thumbs down two particular songs from a certain artist, Pandora will extend that to “you must not like artist.” And never play them again, even if I just don’t like that particular song.

                  For some reason, when you mentioned Central Market above, I was thinking it was a new Battles album that I hadn’t heard yet. But then I looked up the Tyondai solo album on my iPod and realized that is it. My reaction to that album has been more middling — not the love/hate that you mention — but I also haven’t listened to it a ton.

                  I was initially drawn to Battles because I love that Ian Williams guitar tone, also prominently featured on the later-but-still-pre-breakup Don Cab albums. Battles drifted away from that after the first couple of EPs, which is a bummer, but I still like pretty much all of their stuff, My Machines excepted.

                  First time I heard CM I hated it and thought it was hystrionic and A.D.D., then about a few months later I was somewhat randomly lucky to see it performed live on a work trip (!), I really took to it a few songs in.
                  I guess it may be one of those instances where the recorded version is only a fractional portion of the performance, or possibly that its so clean and studio, the live performance had some mistakes and miscues, the performers gave each other winks and smiling smirks which may have brought to earth some.

                  My old roomie introduced me to Don Cab, big fan of What Burns… and the one w/ the crosswalk on it.

        I’m still an album person, which makes me white and old. Ran across some old Pearl Jam albums the other day from their “mature” stage. One of them, “Yield,” is actually quite good.

        The Pearl Jam saga is really interesting, when you realize how weird their rise and “fall” from superstardom happened to be. While they have made some good music (no, really), I think people like me like the idea of Pearl Jam as much as the actual group. They’re an old-fashioned rock band, despite all the grunge hype, and have tried to stick to principles even when it just irritated people, and were compelling live performers.

        In a way, they were the last of their kind.

          Maybe not the last – Soundgarden’s new album is getting some good press. It’s tempting to see them when they come back around.

          • bear88 Dec 2,2012 12:10 am || Up

            It’s hard to recapture moments in time, although Soundgarden was still making interesting music on its pre-breakup album. I haven’t listened to the new one.

            As for Pearl Jam, their anti-Ticketron campaign was noble but naive, setting them up in the ridiculous situation of trying to arrange their own tour without any support from anyone. I saw two of those 1995 shows, including the famously aborted San Francisco show that Neil Young finished up because Eddie Vedder was sick, and a later one in San Jose.

            It was probably one of the few times I saw a top-selling mainstream band at the peak of its popularity (I tend to be early or late), but the whole saga seemed to weigh heavily on the whole band. I respected them for it, but there was something crazy about a band whose claim to fame was its great live shows not performing because of a business dispute. Still, bands have undermined their careers over much less noble goals.

          • the llama Dec 2,2012 5:54 pm || Up

            it’s hard to call such a popular band underrated, but they were unfairly lumped in with the rest of the Seattle bands of the time when they really had a much harder sound that was very different than Nirvana, Pearl Jam, AiC, etc.

    Of all the things I wanted to do today, “watch my landlord and his henchman install a new water heater” was not high on the list. However, I do like hot water.

      Is the henchman cute at all? Probably not. Henchmen rarely are.

    I love my life right now. I feel like gushing and blabbing, but I won’t, other than to say I have a date with a very intelligent and beautiful woman tonight, and I’m super excited. My wife is excited for me too. She was invited, but she’s in more of a bathrobe and sci-fi and bottle of wine mood, and my wife gets what my wife wants.

    Early indications are, my complaints about conference championship games may be realized in the Big Ten. Wisconsin isn’t a bad team, they had some tough losses, but bottom line is they went 4-4 in conference and should be getting ready for the Preparation H Bowl in Lubbock. They have no business sniffing Roses. Nebraska was the only bowl-eligible team with one conference loss and they shouldn’t have to get through this game to get to Pasadena.

    FKing A. Have you ever had one of those phone calls where the phone rings, and you know before you even pick it up that whatever it is it’s going to be bad? I’m still shaking and it all ended up just being a big mistake.

    For those that don’t know I currently share a home with my brother who is a Sacramento police officer. We have a house phone for emergancies but no one ever calls that number. But at 9:40pm it rings. I glance at the clock and then the phone and my heart hits the floor – somehow KNOWING it was bad. The woman on the other end of the phone says “Hi, this is R***** from the police department, is D**** there?” Thinking maybe it was the Fairfield PD I said he’d left for work. There was a long pause and then “Do you know what time he left? He hasn’t checked in yet, and we can’t get ahold of him on his cell phone”. As far as I had known he’d left around 4-5pm – figuring he was heading into work, and told her that. A couple more questions and then me getting her name and number to call her back after checking in with the rest of my family hoping someone would have heard something, she says “hang on my cell is ringing, maybe it’s him”.

    Thankfully yes it was him and apparently he had gotten the night off and his Sgt just forgot to take him off the roster. Holy FK I always figured if I was going to get “that phone call” it would have been during my marriage (I was an Army wife for 8 years).

    End result? Me sitting at my table shaking horribly (now that the crisis has passed) & very thankful my baby brother is just fine.

      One of my friends has a brother who’s a Marine. A few years ago, when he got home from a tour in Iraq, she went to the airbase to meet him. He had a huge bandage on his neck. Come to find out that a few weeks before, his Humvee had hit an IUD, flipped over, and was subsequently attacked by insurgents. He was shot through the neck and left for dead. He was the only person in the convoy to survive. He neglected to mention any of this to his family before returning home. Of course, she and her mom (a retired Marine) were more than a little shaken. She (my friend) absolutely lost it when he went back for another tour.

        That’s excellent.

        I was babysitting the great-nieces yesterday — they’re on their first return to their birthplace, SF, since their move back to Minnesota last spring — and, once we’d exhausted the sticker books and got bored with the game on the iPad, I fired up YouTube and taught them how to Bernie Lean. The 3.75-year-old was minimally interested but the 6.5-year-old watched the video with Coco getting bonked on the head twice. Then she decided to set up an infield, using the sticker books as bases, and demonstrated her home-run skills.

        • Tutu-late Dec 2,2012 3:00 pm || Up

          I’m doing well. The new joints are ok, but its taking the muscles a while to re-grow themselves. I still can’t kneel down, and the first step is an adventure. The Dr said it could take a year to come around. I am rebuilding a bike I bought so that I can start losing the 30-40 lbs I gained during the recoveries this year. What happened to Mankins? Is he hurt, or was he traded from the Patriots?

                I should explain the muscle issue. In order to get to the knee joint itself, they had to split my quad and move them out of the way to attach the metal pieces. That’s why it takes the muscles a while to recoup.

      I’m OK with the strings. The real problem is Elton John’s voice. He never had much vocal range, so he has to switch into that screechy voice in the middle of the “hold me closer tiny dancer line” which turns the moment the whole song has been building to into an anticlimax.

      • colin Dec 3,2012 1:01 pm || Up

        Girl Talk conclusively demonstrated that Tiny Dancer was meant to be pitch-shifted and then have Biggie rapping over the top of it.

              Rickey doesn’t rap over songs. Songs play under him.

        The screechy voice would be better without the faux-grandeur of the strings

        • Glorious Mundy Dec 11,2012 10:12 am || Up

          I heard TD in the car this morning. The combination of the strings and the lap steel now sounds completely ridiculous, thanks to you.

          • the llama Dec 11,2012 8:13 pm || Up

            ik,r? If they let the pedal steel dominate the song, it turns into an awesome country ballad.

      I just found this excellent podcast that breaks down great songs in a really fun and intelligent way, with lots of talk about music theory, arranging, production techniques etc.

      He did an episode on Tiny Dancer (and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road), and the only negative thing he had to say about it was…you guessed it.

          My huge Magic days ran from approximately 1996 to 2000. I still have all my decks, but I wonder how much I would recognize things in the current state of the game.

          • nevermoor Dec 4,2012 12:21 pm || Up

            Yeah, the new stuff is (imo) gimmicky and awful. Some friends got into booster drafts recently, and it just doesn’t have the… err… magic the old stuff did.

            What separated MtG from other similar games for me was that essentially everything was general use to some degree, unlike say Star Wars where 50% of the cards only impacted a specific other card.

            My MtG years were probably 1992-1994 or so. So I didn’t get the original black border cards (though they were still in common circulation), but I started out with the second edition of the basic set and there weren’t any named expansions yet.

          • Kylianna Dec 4,2012 5:53 pm || Up

            I’m trying to get back into it, but it just seems like a totally different game. :(

            I bought the Xbox Arcade game of it to try and get used to things in a safer, cheaper setting.

            • Dial C for Concupiscence Dec 4,2012 6:34 pm || Up

              I’ve been messing around with an online card game called Elements and I’ve been enjoying it a lot. It’s very clearly MtG-inspired, and it does a great job offering a range of strategies and builds from straightforward and simple to tricky and convoluted while making a huge range of decks viable. Plus the online aspect allows them to implement randomness into certain cards effectively, which keeps every game different.

              It’s worth playing around with (it’s all free) if you’re itching for a good online CCG in the MtG vein.

      • Jennifer Dec 2,2012 7:46 pm || Up

        Perler beads. You put beads on a board with pegs on it. You make shapes or animals or whatever. Then you iron them and made coasters or magnets.
