2. Even with the Madoff case mostly settled, the Mets finances might still be perilous. I don’t envy Sandy Alderson that situation, although it’s worth noting that their slashed payroll is still at least 50% higher than Oakland’s.

To fend off a possible challenge by a candidate backed by the conservative Tea Party movement, McConnell hired Jesse Benton as his campaign manager – a political strategist with Tea Party ties.

At least David Frum refuses to give up the mantle of non-crazy conservative, or as DeLong puts it

the guy who coined the phrase “axis of evil” is now the moral conscience of the Republican Party.

    1. Interesting. From the article alone, absent other sources of info, I’d take away that signing Greinke entailed a much lower mental health-related risk for a team than would Hamilton, in that Greinke’s ailment tends to respond well to meds, which is exactly what Greinke says has happened, while people with Hamilton’s ailment tend to relapse.

    And that’s not even taking into account the anecdotal evidence from last season, where Hamilton appeared to be freaking out a little. If I were a team that would be badly hurt by a big free agent contract gone awry, I’d sure steer clear of Hamilton.

      BTW, Hamilton is a guy I could see having trouble finding a team, and then signing a lowball offer loaded with incentives just before ST. I wonder if there’s an MLB team in the bay area that looks for guys like that.

                Holy over-simplification.

                Top ten states by federal spending per capita net of income taxes (in other words, per capita spending minus per capita tax revenue).
                10. North Dakota – $10438. Red state, but just elected (barely) a Democrat Senator.
                9. Connecticut – $10505. Blue state.
                8. West Virginia – $10568. Red, but elected a Democrat for Senate and Governor.
                7. Alabama – $10656. Red state.
                6. Kentucky – $12129. Red state.
                5. New Mexico – $12399. Blue state.
                4. Hawaii – $13709. There’s a good reason Elvis’ big hit was not called “Red Hawaii”.
                3. Maryland – $13723. Blue state.
                2. Virginia – $14201. Blue state.
                1. Alaska – $15197. So Red, you can see Russia from there.

                Looks like five reds and five blues in the top 10. I suppose that if you run the whole list, you’d find more red states in the upper half of revenue-sucking, but to be fair, DC needs to also be included.

                  For what it’s worth, part of what I hear from red staters is this is an explanation rather than an inconsistency. A major theme among Mrs. N’s crazier relatives is that they don’t want to pay for a bunch of lazy ingrates surviving off of gov’t checks and, because they work in hospitals, they apparently see a lot of actual examples.

                  Obviously not my world view, but also not something usually considered in these discussions.

                  19/22 (there were 28 blue states in 2008). Also, I’m not disputing the fact of which states are more effective at wallowing up to the federal trough, but the fact remains that among the top ten, the distribution is even between red and blue. I’m also showing red/blue for this election, not 2008.

                  Also, the fact the California gets less back than we pay in suggests that perhaps we should secede from the US, or at least the Californians deserve tax relief.

                  Or that Californians love this country enough to support it with our money, unlike others who love this country only enough to demand tax cuts.

                  I’d vote for seceding. That’s only a very small reason, but it’s is one of them. Considering how well our economy produces and how much tax monies get created, imagine what we could do if we got the money we gave to the Fed on top of that. We wouldn’t be in a constant cash crisis and we could probably lower overall taxes.

                  You’d better make sure eastern parts of Oregon and Washington don’t secede from their states and align themselves with Idaho. Even without the secession of those eastern areas there’s a problem with Idaho impounding water in the Columbia River basin which could FK up the lower Columbia’s hydroelectric dams pretty severely. Much worse if the rightist rural/desert areas of Oregon and Washington leave. I envision war over this issue.

                  I agree with your take, but Alameda’s not the best example, in that they a) failed to replace lost businesses and consumers for nearly 20 years; and b) have still not re-used the base land at all. Alameda owes its success to retaining a lot of its housing values post-crash (relative to other cities), due in large part to a dominant anti-housing political faction.

                  It’s relevant, yes, but given that the GOP is generally pro-defense spending and anti-everything else-spending, I’d like to see who the losers would have been in a GOP admin and how they voted.

                  There are several riveting conversation threads on Free Republic about this (sort of), albeit more in the vein of “going Galt” or having the power to tip the scales in swing states.

                  For instance, one guy on the site is considering a move from CA to WY. A few people replied to say that a.) it’s too cold and b.) it’s not worth it because most of the state is “federal land, anyway.”

    Just spent the weekend at Stinson Beach, using the free rental we were given to compensate for last time’s interruption by the Sheriff’s department investigating the stolen TV.

    In a bizarre coincidence, when we arrived on Saturday afternoon they were just taking delivery of another new TV to replace the one that had replaced the one stolen last time we were there, and which had itself been stolen the night before.

    Amazing weather though.

  11. ozzman99 Nov 12,2012 8:30 pm

    5. On the one hand, Republicans have little to gain from more obstructionism. On the other hand, they’re scared to lose their base by moving toward the center. They kind of remind me of American car companies a few years ago. They were so scared of making cars that were less appealing to their existing buyers that they failed to appeal to the larger segment of import buyers.
    Another problem for Republicans is that they don’t want to lose their corporate sponsorships big donors.

    • dmoas Nov 12,2012 8:47 pm || Up

      A real party split seems to be in the making between the hard core righties and the moderates. For some reason I can’t see the party surviving much longer. And I think we’ll all be the better for it.

      • ozzman99 Nov 12,2012 8:51 pm || Up

        I tend to agree. Although 3rd parties never last long in this country. My guess is that a new Republican party will eventually coalesce around the Tea Party types. The moderates will be Independents or Libertarians for a few years, but eventually will end up as Democrats.

        • dmoas Nov 12,2012 11:26 pm || Up

          I kind of think the other way around may happen. The moderates will pick up those from the indies would think both are too extreme as well as some Democrats who would have been Republicans if not for the extremism. The TP will be relevant only in terms of extreme states but their overall influence will be severely weaken/non-existent (think more “powerful” independents). I suspect it will appear the other way around at first, but only because they have the strongest voice, not necessarily the strongest following (think very vocal minority). They’ll alienate a lot of people and continue to shrink their base as the Republican party as a whole continues to shrink. Once it shrinks enough, a power vacuum will form where the (majority) non-crazy conservatives and the middle road moderates will be looking for a place to go/get away from the too powerful left. It could take another 10-20 years for it all to play out, but I think we’ll be better for it. Alternatively, we could see the collapse of the Union as a whole and again we’ll (those in the non-crazy states) will be the better for it. But that’s less likely.

                  They won’t let me establish residency based on points so whether or not they would let me vote so voting is really quite irrelevant.

                  This is another thing that I don’t get. The national government has the right to change immigration laws and theoretically could have to leave as a permanent resident. If the national body makes a decision like whether you can come or stay, it could theoretically make a law that states that in order to immigrate to the US you must be willing to become a US citizen. Would that be terrible and discriminatory to the point that I am interning people?

    How can I know if this is compatible with my Mac?

    • Soaker Nov 12,2012 10:17 pm || Up

      Go to the manufacturer’s website and look it up? The quick answer is No, because when I put that product code into the search box it comes up under “Notebook Memory for PC”.

      Edit: Reading through the reviews on the Newegg site it looks like a few people have succeeded in putting those in MacBook Pros. I’m not sure memory is a great place to save a few bucks by buying Brand X

      Try this place: http://www.memorystore.com/. If only to find the right type of memory before searching for best price.

      • Soaker Nov 13,2012 9:16 am || Up

        Yes, it’s easy to buy something incompatible with your system, so when I’ve upgraded I’ve gone to Crucial’s site and downloaded their scanner and let them tell me what options I have on my machine. Obviously they’re going to sell me their own product but Crucial is a well-regarded brand name. It wouldn’t be $49 either, but now clicking on Ozz’s link I see that special is no longer in effect anyway.

        If you see another deal and think the memory would work but can’t determine for sure it might be good to call the company’s support line, give them the info about your machine and double-check before buying.

          I’m not necessarily looking for the lowest price. I should have been more specific. I’m actually wanting to know if I can put 2 8GB DIMMs in my computer. I was previously told that it would accept up to 4GB per slot, but that was a few years ago and I don’t know if that’s a limitation of the motherboard or the OS or if 8GB DIMMs simply didn’t exist at the time. I guess I need to talk to the Apple people.

          • Soaker Nov 13,2012 10:41 am || Up

            Ah. Try downloading and running that system scanner from Crucial and it should answer that.

            • ozzman99 Nov 13,2012 10:52 am || Up

              Thanks! Looks like I max out at 4GB per slot. Well, that’s twice what I currently have, and Crucial has an 8GB kit for only $41. Looks like that’s the way I’m going.

          • dmoas Nov 13,2012 10:54 am || Up

            Usually it’s a limitation of the MB & OS. Older OSes tend not to be able to read/utilize more than 4GB total and some MB’s have max limits per slot.

    Another bit of random Twitter search yielded this shallow piece of “analysis” on Yahoo: Oakland A’s Attendance Up, Still Near Bottom of League.

    The A’s were 27th in the majors in total attendance finishing ahead of Houston, Cleveland, and Tampa Bay.

    That statistic, so often quoted by stadium concern trolls, is meaningless unless you note that with the tarps in place, the A’s are 29th in the majors in potential seating capacity at home.

    If you sort the ESPN figures by percentage of stadium that’s filled, the A’s are #20 of 30 teams in home attendance, with an average of 60.6% filled. Now that still isn’t a very good number, but it is better than teams you rarely hear described as playing before empty stadiums such as Atlanta and the White Sox.

    • dmoas Nov 13,2012 10:58 am || Up

      Yes and no. Percent filled only really matters if you’re selling out a lot of games and hitting on that max a lot. The A’s had very, very few games where they sold out so the potential loss as a result of the tarps is negligible. If, for instance, the Red Sox filled their small stadium to 100% every game but were 30th in the league in total attendance then it would be relevant (this being an extreme example of relevancy). The fact is, the A’s individual game attendance simply isn’t making that scenario relevant.

      • FreeSeatUpgrade Nov 13,2012 11:53 am || Up

        The A’s had very, very few games where they sold out so the potential loss as a result of the tarps is negligible.

        This is not accurate, and is bad math. The number of games which might have sold more than 34K tickets without tarps in place is not the same as the number of games which were at/near sellouts with tarps in place. You’ve made this false equivalency a number of times, I’ve tried to correct each one, so I’ll stop now.

          Aside from “I’d have shown up if I could have gotten $2 upper deck tickets instead of $12 blah blah tickets” which does the team no good, sure, it’s a false equivalency.

          • FreeSeatUpgrade Nov 13,2012 9:09 pm || Up

            Yes, but that’s only part of it. Lots of games that aren’t anywhere near sellouts now would still sell more tickets if there weren’t tarps. A crowd of 25K+ fans now is pretty much always a sellout in the cheaper sections, and what’s left is at like 75% of median prices. There are lots of tickets which could be sold.

            "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
            • dmoas Nov 13,2012 9:29 pm || Up

              If I buy that (and I don’t) given that we didn’t really sell out those dates, but let’s say we do. I don’t think MLB really cares, ultimately you’re trading a higher number of people for lower a lower percentage of capacity on the whole. Because there’s only small portion of high occupancy games and a lot of traditionally low occupancy games that would be even less occupied percentage-wise. Cheap tickets being bought instead of the higher priced ones and getting less money with more people will surely get MLB excited.

          I think there are a few of them from San Rafael to Santa Rosa, depending on the day and time. The one from El Cerrito to San Rafael is the 40 or 42. I think it only goes on weekdays. If you’re trying to do this on a weekend your best bet is probably BART to downtown SF and then grabbing GGT there.

                Call Bloom? GGT isn’t horrible, but just be ready to take a chunk out of your day to get their. They’re reliable, but (especially depending on the line(s) you take, it can take a long time to get there. Whenever possible take the expresses that avoid Marin. If there’s a SF to Santa Rosa line take that over a San Rafael transfer, but that might not be avoidable. http://goldengate.org/schedules.php This will allow you to set your locations, looks like you’re going through SF regardless.

                  IMO, I think THAT is going to be what ultimately does in Loria or the Marlins as a whole.

                  Now that it’s looked at closely, the contracts were structured so that they could dump them all after a year or two. Loria just completely FKed Miami taxpayers out of a stadium.

                  I forgot I was talking to you when I wrote that…

                  The Marlins didn’t open up their books prior to stadium construction and pleaded poverty and the corrupt tools in Miami-Dade went along with Loria & Beinfest’s BS. Later on, the books were revealed on Deadspin, and it was shown that Loria & Beinfest had been lying to county commissioners about their finances.

                  It’s my hope that this particular housecleaning will be the straw that breaks the camels back and eventually leads to a backlash that leads to a criminal investigation of Loria & Beinfest in regards to their shady stadium dealings. Although, Dade County should have done that when Deadspin revealed the Marlins’ books, about 18 months before the stadium opened. That would have made them look really foolish, tho, so maybe now they can get away with some faux mea culpas and turning the dogs on the Marlins.
