1. A psychologist (and well-known baseball stat guy) gives his thoughts on Greinke, Hamilton, and mental illness in pro sports in general.
2. Even with the Madoff case mostly settled, the Mets finances might still be perilous. I don’t envy Sandy Alderson that situation, although it’s worth noting that their slashed payroll is still at least 50% higher than Oakland’s.
3. “statisticians are the new sexy vampires, only even more pasty.”
4. Geez, maybe Willard was right about Sesame Street.
5. In case you were wondering whether the Republicans were going to start compromising on the economy, taxes, filibuster reform, etc. or quadruple down on obstruction:
To fend off a possible challenge by a candidate backed by the conservative Tea Party movement, McConnell hired Jesse Benton as his campaign manager – a political strategist with Tea Party ties.
At least David Frum refuses to give up the mantle of non-crazy conservative, or as DeLong puts it
the guy who coined the phrase “axis of evil” is now the moral conscience of the Republican Party.
4. This is extra sad having just seen Being Elmo.
Better not turn out to be another Jimmy Savile.
He always seemed really creepy to me.
Elmo? Yeah
His accuser recanted, now says he was of age when they got it on. Good.
Herry and Prairie dawn couldn’t get the dirt on the kid
1. Interesting. From the article alone, absent other sources of info, I’d take away that signing Greinke entailed a much lower mental health-related risk for a team than would Hamilton, in that Greinke’s ailment tends to respond well to meds, which is exactly what Greinke says has happened, while people with Hamilton’s ailment tend to relapse.
And that’s not even taking into account the anecdotal evidence from last season, where Hamilton appeared to be freaking out a little. If I were a team that would be badly hurt by a big free agent contract gone awry, I’d sure steer clear of Hamilton.
So you think the Yankees, Red Sox, or Dodgers will sign him? With an outside chance for the Orioles?
BTW, Hamilton is a guy I could see having trouble finding a team, and then signing a lowball offer loaded with incentives just before ST. I wonder if there’s an MLB team in the bay area that looks for guys like that.
I bet you
two lines of coke$5 that he wouldn’t smile NEARLY enough. If I had $5, I woulda voted for Romney.
Too much sun.
So you think he’ll sign with the Rays.
These are the same people who called Gore a sore loser for going to court to (try to) make Florida count votes fairly. Grow up, conservatives.
I’m disappointed that it only shows the last initials of the signatories. It would be useful to have a running list of people dumb enough to put their names to this for future reference, in case one of them ever wants to borrow money from me or go into a joint business venture.
I’m sure some computer genius could hack said potential borrower/partner and get you an answer.
I say we make a deal. Texas takes over the US national debt and they can have their independence.
Honestly, the rest of us would be better off if we let those fools go.
Yup. And they could take the rest of the bible belt with them.
I’d be fine with that. Plus, the rest of the US would save a lot of money.
the red states are money losers for the federal government
Exactly.
:(
There’d be a disbursement draft, and I’m sure you’d go to California in a high round.
Holy over-simplification.
Top ten states by federal spending per capita net of income taxes (in other words, per capita spending minus per capita tax revenue).
10. North Dakota – $10438. Red state, but just elected (barely) a Democrat Senator.
9. Connecticut – $10505. Blue state.
8. West Virginia – $10568. Red, but elected a Democrat for Senate and Governor.
7. Alabama – $10656. Red state.
6. Kentucky – $12129. Red state.
5. New Mexico – $12399. Blue state.
4. Hawaii – $13709. There’s a good reason Elvis’ big hit was not called “Red Hawaii”.
3. Maryland – $13723. Blue state.
2. Virginia – $14201. Blue state.
1. Alaska – $15197. So Red, you can see Russia from there.
Looks like five reds and five blues in the top 10. I suppose that if you run the whole list, you’d find more red states in the upper half of revenue-sucking, but to be fair, DC needs to also be included.
20 Red States out of 23 received more from the feds than they put in
How many blue? (Curiosity, not disagreement). And middle states?
13/27 Pay more the feds than they take back
So what you’re saying… if I’m understanding you correctly… is that… on the whole… you’re semi-conclusively… suggesting that Blue is a quite largely in the black while the Red is… quite largely in the red.
Pretty much
For what it’s worth, part of what I hear from red staters is this is an explanation rather than an inconsistency. A major theme among Mrs. N’s crazier relatives is that they don’t want to pay for a bunch of lazy ingrates surviving off of gov’t checks and, because they work in hospitals, they apparently see a lot of actual examples.
Obviously not my world view, but also not something usually considered in these discussions.
They realize that most hospitals wouldn’t survive without federal funds right?
Probably not.
I don’t get the argument. The feds pay for the hospitals because they don’t want to?
No, people who don’t deserve it get a ton of care, and are also rude.
(and bla..)
Yep. I’m sure that’s part of it
19/22 (there were 28 blue states in 2008). Also, I’m not disputing the fact of which states are more effective at wallowing up to the federal trough, but the fact remains that among the top ten, the distribution is even between red and blue. I’m also showing red/blue for this election, not 2008.
Also, the fact the California gets less back than we pay in suggests that perhaps we should secede from the US, or at least the Californians deserve tax relief.
Or that Californians love this country enough to support it with our money, unlike others who love this country only enough to demand tax cuts.
I’d vote for seceding. That’s only a very small reason, but it’s is one of them. Considering how well our economy produces and how much tax monies get created, imagine what we could do if we got the money we gave to the Fed on top of that. We wouldn’t be in a constant cash crisis and we could probably lower overall taxes.
…I may have been a California Secessionalist in my youth. (to the surprise of no one)
We need to take Oregon and Washington with us.
California Uber alles
Califoregton?
You’d better make sure eastern parts of Oregon and Washington don’t secede from their states and align themselves with Idaho. Even without the secession of those eastern areas there’s a problem with Idaho impounding water in the Columbia River basin which could FK up the lower Columbia’s hydroelectric dams pretty severely. Much worse if the rightist rural/desert areas of Oregon and Washington leave. I envision war over this issue.
If we form an alliance with Canada, they can threaten to cut off the water before it gets to Idaho.
I’d prefer to create the United Peoples of the Columbia River Basin. We’d manage our water resources much better if our governments were formed along those boundaries. You fine Californians can have the Klamath, though. Way too much headache.
damn sucker fish.
The Republic of the Pacific?
Pacific States of America.
too derivatives
Coastal United States of the Pacific? And for short: C us P.
Pacifiania
Might as well simplify and go with Pacifica.
The People’s Republic of East American Continental Heterogeny. PREACH
Yeah, but Pacifica doesn’t rhyme with Oceania
Pac-istan.
And ozzie wins the internet.
Absolutely! And Hawaii.
Ecotopia. Book was written years ago.
Yep. I might try to read it again, although skimming over the parts describing the weird sport that they invented. I’d rather just revive the PCL as a major league and compete with Japan and Korea for the Ultimate Pacific Series championship.
But dude… medicinal blow jobs! (heh)
Their warsport was a fine participatory substitute for the NFL and should have been held monthly rather than yearly. The modern equivalent of their simple socialist manufacturing structure would be 3-D printing, and their cobbled-together airforce would obviously be done today with drones.
wait, medicinal… HUH?
Thanks, and go As.
Yeah, the nurses gave BJ’s to recuperating male patients in hospitals as part of the recovery process. Male nurses serviced the needs of female patients. I don’t think Callenbach thought ahead enough to worry too hard about queers or trannies, but that’s okay. The book was written in 1975.
I’m beginning to feel some aches and pains from that car accident. Where’s the nurse?
HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR THIS? HMO???
Thanks, and go As.
Hmmm…it’s been about 15 years since I read it – don’t remember the BJ part, but that was the last time I regularly smoked pot, so I don’t remember much of it besides the basic premise and the warsport, which just was too weird for my taste.
I’m a California Sensationalist.
I’m surprised that Connecticut is on that list.
Heavy defense spending, according to the link.
That’s where we build our submarines.
gotcha
Sikorsky is also based there.
So I wonder what that Top 10 list looks like once we take out defense spending.
I think that including defense spending is relevant. It’s still basically pork.
this. How many stupid redundant bases do we have because some community would be devastated if it they shut them down?
Well, a lot less than there were 30 years ago. There’s usually a lot of hand-wringing when BRAC announces a closure but most of the affected communities seem to do pretty well after the initial transition period (hello, Alameda!).
Alemeda is in a metro area with a diverse economy unlike a lot of bases in other parts of the country.
I agree with your take, but Alameda’s not the best example, in that they a) failed to replace lost businesses and consumers for nearly 20 years; and b) have still not re-used the base land at all. Alameda owes its success to retaining a lot of its housing values post-crash (relative to other cities), due in large part to a dominant anti-housing political faction.
Sacramento, methinks, is the best example on that front.
We lost three bases over 12 years, and we’re doing alright.
It’s relevant, yes, but given that the GOP is generally pro-defense spending and anti-everything else-spending, I’d like to see who the losers would have been in a GOP admin and how they voted.
Yeah Im more than willing to let them go. Provide subsidized moving costs for people that want to leave the states that they are leaving.
Set aside a little extra for any top-notch barbecue chefs who want to emigrate.
That’s Socialist talk. Make them pay their own damn moving costs.
Win.
i was thinking of the city of Austin, who might want to come hang out with us blue states
Oh, I thought (and dmoas too, apparently) that you meant subsidizing moving people from states that want to stay to states that want to leave.
There are several riveting conversation threads on Free Republic about this (sort of), albeit more in the vein of “going Galt” or having the power to tip the scales in swing states.
For instance, one guy on the site is considering a move from CA to WY. A few people replied to say that a.) it’s too cold and b.) it’s not worth it because most of the state is “federal land, anyway.”
At least 226 of them (and counting) do…
Up to nearly 1k.
Thanks to how much federal money they take?
Can non-Texans sign this petition?
Hehe.
Just like the other 49.
And that too.
Yeah, no shit. Give Texas the right to muster a military, print money, and float debt and then watch the fun wackiness that ensues!
Give us 5 years to put people to work building a giant fucking wall around them first. And Mexico. I’m sure they’d want to do that too.
Appropriate response.
Way to put the worst team in your league on Monday Night Football, NFL.
The Jags are playing tonight?
I could think of a few teams.
Who would be your pick for worst?
Your momma.
Agreed. She’s a terrible football player.
I might pick Cleveland, just because dogs suck.
UGH!
Hey! It IS the Chiefs playing! LOL
Shameless self-promotion. A few shots I did last week for this blog. I know they’re not great, but it’s nice to be published.
great shots of nudes in New York
Thanks. Believe it or not, those are all self-portraits.
Liar.
You’re right, I lie. Being published sucks ass.
I wouldn’t know.
But… I swear I saw your mug shot in the newspaper once.
That’s possible.
Well, I guess technically you’re not published. Someone else took the photo.
Free publicity!
Was it this photo of me?
Not funny.
The truth hurts.
Whatever.
If you remove the face and turn your head to the side, it looks like one of my boobs.
Pics of STFU.
I mean or, not of.
That is a pic.
A pic of your boob.
Nice looking space. Charleston has some damn good restaurants.
Yes. They don’t tend to be on the cutting edge of new food trends, but there are a number of places that do what they do very well.
Lovely!
Thank you :)
I think you did a very good job
Thanks. Architectural photography isn’t really my thing, and I usually only have half an hour or less to shoot these restaurants, but I try to do the best I can.
I have the yips.
What does that mean? And is it contagious?
But mine is with tests and quizzes. Something happened… I can’t even do simple nursing math now. I’ve never had a problem with that. Today, I got so nervous, I forgot to finish the quiz before I turned it in.
Damn it. The semester is almost over. Take a deep breath and just try to get through each day. Don’t let it overwhelm you.
I am making stupid mistakes. I’m so angry and upset.
Thanksgiving is next week. All you have to do is make it that far. Worry about after that, after that.
I’m not passing, dude.
You can’t get overwhelmed or flustered. All you can do is the best you can do. And concentrate on maximizing your results on the task in front of you. Don’t worry about tomorrow, just take care of today. Look at your history. You didn’t get here by accident, or luck. You earned it. You know that you can do it. You have done it.
right on!
You’ll be fine! Mistakes happen and you sometimes don’t get it right the first time around. If this never happened to anyone, there wouldn’t be this thing called “school” to begin with.
Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh.
Nope nope nope nope, yep yep yep yep.
Option 1: Employ top-notch sports psychologist.
Option 2: Chill the fuck out. You’ll be fine.
Just spent the weekend at Stinson Beach, using the free rental we were given to compensate for last time’s interruption by the Sheriff’s department investigating the stolen TV.
In a bizarre coincidence, when we arrived on Saturday afternoon they were just taking delivery of another new TV to replace the one that had replaced the one stolen last time we were there, and which had itself been stolen the night before.
Amazing weather though.
That’s gorgeous.
So I gather that this time you stole the TV the night before you arrived, to divert suspicion.
hope you had a blast. i really like it out there
Not entirely NSFW.
Damn it.
I needed that laugh, thank you.
You’re welcome. What’s up?
Not much. Just having a hard time switching my brain off this evening.
Try reading up on health insurance. Or tax code.
Maybe he thought the guy was a virus.
I wonder if he got in via a Trojan Horse.
More tidbits from Wired earlier today.
5. On the one hand, Republicans have little to gain from more obstructionism. On the other hand, they’re scared to lose their base by moving toward the center. They kind of remind me of American car companies a few years ago. They were so scared of making cars that were less appealing to their existing buyers that they failed to appeal to the larger segment of import buyers.
Another problem for Republicans is that they don’t want to lose their
corporate sponsorshipsbig donors.A real party split seems to be in the making between the hard core righties and the moderates. For some reason I can’t see the party surviving much longer. And I think we’ll all be the better for it.
I tend to agree. Although 3rd parties never last long in this country. My guess is that a new Republican party will eventually coalesce around the Tea Party types. The moderates will be Independents or Libertarians for a few years, but eventually will end up as Democrats.
I kind of think the other way around may happen. The moderates will pick up those from the indies would think both are too extreme as well as some Democrats who would have been Republicans if not for the extremism. The TP will be relevant only in terms of extreme states but their overall influence will be severely weaken/non-existent (think more “powerful” independents). I suspect it will appear the other way around at first, but only because they have the strongest voice, not necessarily the strongest following (think very vocal minority). They’ll alienate a lot of people and continue to shrink their base as the Republican party as a whole continues to shrink. Once it shrinks enough, a power vacuum will form where the (majority) non-crazy conservatives and the middle road moderates will be looking for a place to go/get away from the too powerful left. It could take another 10-20 years for it all to play out, but I think we’ll be better for it. Alternatively, we could see the collapse of the Union as a whole and again we’ll (those in the non-crazy states) will be the better for it. But that’s less likely.
Hmm, I could see this too.
So we’re going to have One Party Rule for 10-20 years? OK fine. Now that the Democrats will have like 70% of the country supporting them, can they pick someone better than Obama next time. I’m to blame for him too. I voted for him in 2008.
I’d certainly hope they could find someone better than Obama next time. They certainly can’t follow him up with Biden or someone of his ilk otherwise it’ll swing back to stupid.
Andrew Cuomo?
The contenders as they stand right now
Hillary would clear the field
Biden
Kristen Gillibrand
Andrew Cuomo
Martin O’Mally
Elizabeth Warren
Devall Patrick
Antonio Villaraigosa
Corey Booker
I would love so much to live in a country that elected a Warren/Clinton ticket next time. Unfortunately, I think she might actually be too liberal.
I’m just not so sure Hillary runs. Though maybe we can overturn an amendment and put Bill back in.
I mean, she’ll be on the old side and I think the electoral reality is that you probably want a white guy on the ticket no matter who the other person is. But most of DFA’s list isn’t very exciting at all, and damn would those two make an exciting ticket.
Martin OMally is a bad ass
What if the GOP runs Jindal or Rubio and tries to play the “race card” for their own side?
Rubio didn’t change florida polling outcomes when he was added to the ticket. I don’t htink that he will matter as much as people think.
Jindal is boring as fuck too.
They think that will work, because they think non-white voters will change their loyalties based on the skin color of the candidates. That’s wrong. They have to change their policy positions and their rhetoric.
Agreed. Also Rubio’s Cuban and there is a HUGE break between Latinos of Cuban origin and the rest of the demographic especially on immigration.
Yeah. That one is important. GM’s point, though, is most important. A hispanic talking about self-deportation is still talking about self-deportation.
But they may be telling white Americans to self-deport back to Europe.
If the UK would take me back I would go!
Establish residency and they’d even let you vote.
They won’t let me establish residency based on points so whether or not they would let me vote so voting is really quite irrelevant.
This is another thing that I don’t get. The national government has the right to change immigration laws and theoretically could have to leave as a permanent resident. If the national body makes a decision like whether you can come or stay, it could theoretically make a law that states that in order to immigrate to the US you must be willing to become a US citizen. Would that be terrible and discriminatory to the point that I am interning people?
You’re interning people? I didn’t know that was even legal.
Its not. But apparently I secretly want to do it.
I will only self deport to England or Palestine when I get the right to vote in local elections
England Wales or Ireland all seem pretty peachy to me.
They kinda tried that already. Remember when they put Palin on the ticket and then claimed that Dems were sexist for criticizing her? No one listened to them because it was a stupid argument.
Yeah, but Palin is so ridiculous that we may need a corollary to Godwin’s Law for comparisons to what did or didn’t work in that campaign.
Dont think hillary would be vp :-P
Is it too early to start wearing Clinton/Warren 2016 shirts? Because I want to.
Only if it’s Bill.
Thanks, and go As.
Eh, I don’t think I need a shirt for the First Gentleman.
I believe that would be First Tramp. Because the opposite of Lady is Tramp, right?
(resists urge to make crude remark)
STOPPED READING HALFWAY THROUGH THE SENTENCE!
(that’s for WC)
Thanks, and go As.
There was something after “shirt”?
They’d be 69 and 67 on Inauguration Day if I did my math correctly.
I wonder how much that would impact their electability, especially if the GOP runs Jindal or Rubio.
One State!
The refs are really screwing KC tonight.
Here’s hoping for another tie.
Or not.
Nope, the Chiefs finally outsuck themselves.
It had to happen sooner or later.
So maybe David Lowery was wrong.
This Petraeus story just keeps getting crazier.
Is this how I’m supposed to make friends?
Works every time
Showoff.
Yes. Send out shirtless photos of that agent and watch the people flock to you!
Oh, and now there’s another general caught up in it.
Generally speaking this is quite unbecoming of an Officer and a Gentleman.
It’s a major pain in the ass when private matters become public. I think corporal punishment would be appropriate in this case.
Your commitment to this bit is admira(b)l(e).
EM still wins for her “left tenant” comment the last time we did this.
Damn skippy!
In Lieu, Tenants should bow down to EM.
How can I know if this is compatible with my Mac?
Go to the manufacturer’s website and look it up? The quick answer is No, because when I put that product code into the search box it comes up under “Notebook Memory for PC”.
Edit: Reading through the reviews on the Newegg site it looks like a few people have succeeded in putting those in MacBook Pros. I’m not sure memory is a great place to save a few bucks by buying Brand X
Try this place: http://www.memorystore.com/. If only to find the right type of memory before searching for best price.
Yes, it’s easy to buy something incompatible with your system, so when I’ve upgraded I’ve gone to Crucial’s site and downloaded their scanner and let them tell me what options I have on my machine. Obviously they’re going to sell me their own product but Crucial is a well-regarded brand name. It wouldn’t be $49 either, but now clicking on Ozz’s link I see that special is no longer in effect anyway.
If you see another deal and think the memory would work but can’t determine for sure it might be good to call the company’s support line, give them the info about your machine and double-check before buying.
I’m not necessarily looking for the lowest price. I should have been more specific. I’m actually wanting to know if I can put 2 8GB DIMMs in my computer. I was previously told that it would accept up to 4GB per slot, but that was a few years ago and I don’t know if that’s a limitation of the motherboard or the OS or if 8GB DIMMs simply didn’t exist at the time. I guess I need to talk to the Apple people.
Ah. Try downloading and running that system scanner from Crucial and it should answer that.
Thanks! Looks like I max out at 4GB per slot. Well, that’s twice what I currently have, and Crucial has an 8GB kit for only $41. Looks like that’s the way I’m going.
32 bits = 4GB
Usually it’s a limitation of the MB & OS. Older OSes tend not to be able to read/utilize more than 4GB total and some MB’s have max limits per slot.
Listening to Oliver Stone on CNN right now reminds me of why I’m proud to have never seen any of his movies.
Which one of you FKers is responsible for this?
That is pretty great.
Another bit of random Twitter search yielded this shallow piece of “analysis” on Yahoo: Oakland A’s Attendance Up, Still Near Bottom of League.
That statistic, so often quoted by stadium concern trolls, is meaningless unless you note that with the tarps in place, the A’s are 29th in the majors in potential seating capacity at home.
If you sort the ESPN figures by percentage of stadium that’s filled, the A’s are #20 of 30 teams in home attendance, with an average of 60.6% filled. Now that still isn’t a very good number, but it is better than teams you rarely hear described as playing before empty stadiums such as Atlanta and the White Sox.
Yes and no. Percent filled only really matters if you’re selling out a lot of games and hitting on that max a lot. The A’s had very, very few games where they sold out so the potential loss as a result of the tarps is negligible. If, for instance, the Red Sox filled their small stadium to 100% every game but were 30th in the league in total attendance then it would be relevant (this being an extreme example of relevancy). The fact is, the A’s individual game attendance simply isn’t making that scenario relevant.
This is not accurate, and is bad math. The number of games which might have sold more than 34K tickets without tarps in place is not the same as the number of games which were at/near sellouts with tarps in place. You’ve made this false equivalency a number of times, I’ve tried to correct each one, so I’ll stop now.
Aside from “I’d have shown up if I could have gotten $2 upper deck tickets instead of $12 blah blah tickets” which does the team no good, sure, it’s a false equivalency.
I guess I gotta respect your consistency of commitment to ignorance over understanding. Say what you want about the tenets of sticking ones fingers in ones ears and saying LA LA LA I CAN’T HEAR YOU, at least it’s an ethos.
I’m not going to bother arguing with you about this. If anyone’s got their fingers in their ears it’s been you. You’ve had tunnel vision on this whole issue from the get go.
Is the basic argument here: 12 dates that would sell out the whole 50 k (Giants, Yankees, Boston) at 15k extra per date is 180k which is substantial?
Yes, but that’s only part of it. Lots of games that aren’t anywhere near sellouts now would still sell more tickets if there weren’t tarps. A crowd of 25K+ fans now is pretty much always a sellout in the cheaper sections, and what’s left is at like 75% of median prices. There are lots of tickets which could be sold.
If I buy that (and I don’t) given that we didn’t really sell out those dates, but let’s say we do. I don’t think MLB really cares, ultimately you’re trading a higher number of people for lower a lower percentage of capacity on the whole. Because there’s only small portion of high occupancy games and a lot of traditionally low occupancy games that would be even less occupied percentage-wise. Cheap tickets being bought instead of the higher priced ones and getting less money with more people will surely get MLB excited.
We’re ahead of a couple of teams with fancy modern ballparks and no other teams in their markets. Not bad.
This is what the classy people do.
ewwwww scabs
On a related note, I see that Raley’s has settled with their union this morning after about 10 days. That’s good because that’s my preferred store locally.
Who are the scabs in this picture?
people that shop at walmart
broadly defined
awkward that they registered at WS
Rolling back marriage!
Thanks, and go As.
All In
Motorhead has a song called “The Chase is Better Than the Catch.” But sometimes in concert, they’ll change it to “The Face is Better Than the Snatch.”
That’s a real money shot.
There once was a Gen. Petraeus
Whose affair some felt did betray us
To help make amends
His S & M friends
Volunteered themselves saying, “Flay us!”
You totally FKing win the day!
There once was a soldier named Broadwell
Whose presence made a general’s rod swell
Her hagiograph
Made book critics laugh
But the funniest part she did not tell
A rich Tampa woman named Kelley
Got pics of a fed agent’s belly
He found sexy banter
And showed it to Cantor
The whole situation is smelly
A general who’s book was All In
Was found to commit a grave sin
His mistress did email
Her rival in detail
Now he’s taking it on the chin
I need to remember to not read FK during meetings.
The apology is almost funnier than the image.
The death stare Steve Young gives Rick Reilly in this video is so awesome.
Open Enrollment. I just put day care costs into a pre tax flex spending account.
Hope I end up ahead.
Thanks, and go As.
That’s what we do – it helps, if just a bit.
Yeah. I think I’m understanding it right, the pre-tax deduction more than offsets the tax credit I would get if I didn’t do it, and I need every penny I can get at this point.
Thanks, and go As.
Yep. It’s nice to get that bonus deposit in our account twice a month, even if it’s kind of illusory.
Someone tell Bob Dole that Bob Dole forgot to take down Bob Dole’s campaign website.
Awesome. Too bad a few items like the trivia game are no longer functioning.
Yeah, I wanted to make a poster.
You can still download a bitchin’ DoleKemp’96 wallpaper!
1. Clicked on the link to the Dole Institute, currently advertising “An Evening with Newt Gingrich.” It’s a hotbed of politicians fighting irrelevance.
2. Reminds me of one of the more surreal moments living in Russia: Several of us ‘Mercuns spent New Year’s 1997 in a village where some other volunteers lived, at one point getting drunk and watching a tape of the Clinton-Dole debates well after the election, since all news we got was on a 3-month mail delay). I specifically remember watching Dole blurt out “Go visit dolekemp96.org” in the middle of a sentence. As far removed as we were from life/technology/culture in America, the whole thing was ridiculously absurd.
How best do I get from Oakland to Santa Rosa on public transit?
There’s a Golden Gate Transit bus from the El Cerrito del Norte BART Station to the San Rafael transit hub, where you can transfer to a bus for Santa Rosa.
Thanks – that would be bus 101, yes?
I think there are a few of them from San Rafael to Santa Rosa, depending on the day and time. The one from El Cerrito to San Rafael is the 40 or 42. I think it only goes on weekdays. If you’re trying to do this on a weekend your best bet is probably BART to downtown SF and then grabbing GGT there.
If you’re going into the city, you’re much better off renting a zipcar.
I only want one-way transport.
Call Bloom? GGT isn’t horrible, but just be ready to take a chunk out of your day to get their. They’re reliable, but (especially depending on the line(s) you take, it can take a long time to get there. Whenever possible take the expresses that avoid Marin. If there’s a SF to Santa Rosa line take that over a San Rafael transfer, but that might not be avoidable. http://goldengate.org/schedules.php This will allow you to set your locations, looks like you’re going through SF regardless.
What if you get caught between the moon and NYC?
The best that you can do is pray that Christopher Cross doesn’t eat you.
Unless you’re into that sort of thing.
Cry.
Show a little leg.
You don’t.
One does not simply ride a bus into Santa Rosa.
Well 1 for 5 isn’t the worst weighting of helpful to not helpful.
And still no sight of the hoped-for “Oh I drive that route every day – I’ll pick you up at 9:30 tomorrow”
I’d be happy to drive you. I expect me and my car to be there sometime next summer.
1 for 6.
You’re so picky.
A veteran intercontinental traveler such as yourself ought to be able to find a way to SEA, PDX, LAX or SAN and proceed from there.
I did get as far as the Oakland/Santa Rosa airport shuttle.
Amtrak appears to have multiple daily train+bus combos for $32. Mostly bus. When do you need to go?
Probably Thursday.
dafuq?
Thanks, and go As.
Why would anyone want Escobar andf Hechavarria?
They probably had to take Escobar. Buehrle’s contract is on the hefty side.
Huh. So Florida really is going full frontal fire sale again?
Jesus.
Thanks, and go As.
TRAVIS BUCK???
I thought the same thing!
no but he use to be an A’s hand
So who else are the Blue Jays giving up?
Not who but what? Quick calculation says about $158M in future obligations to Johnson, Buehrle and Reyes.
Is it legal to swap an entire team? ‘Cuz I think they’re trying.
Something tells me that Bowie Kuhn would’ve voided this trade.
Yup.
The Marlins are also receiving Jeff Mathis. This is a gamechanger that clearly turns the tide in favor of the Marlins.
they need someone to catch next year.
Kottaras for Stanton. BOOM.
Thanks, and go As.
They’d never go for that. You’d have to throw in Godfrey to make it fair.
And Tyson Ross. Dream on that nasty [pitch]
lolo
So disgusting.
Wow.
Maybe they can carve that ballpark up into little pieces, put it on a train and ship it to Oakland. We can reassemble it in the Coliseum parking lot, sans the retractable roof and that stupid fish tank.
I think the home run display thingy will look okay once we spray-paint it green and gold.
If I wanted a wheezing half alive automaton moving in unnatural fits and spurts in the outfield, I would have suggested trading for Hunter Pence.
The Thing is on the rainbowy side already. It could fairly easily be redesigned to celebrate East Bay multiculturalism and of course Stomper would be a great replacement for the fish.
dont even need to do that. its awesome
Needs Moar Unicorn.
Those owners are making Lew Wolff look like Walter Haas! But seriously folks, they dumped their whole team and Stanton is pissed!
The Marlins are not dumping their whole team. They are dumping the parts that are making significant coin. Stanton isn’t there yet so there’s no reason to believe that he’s available.
its not a terrible baseball trade
Yea that’s the one thing — they’re getting good fuckin prospects back.
and Jeff Mathis
Thanks, and go As.
yup, and all those contracts are backloaded so they got the good year out of them before they traded them.
IMO, I think THAT is going to be what ultimately does in Loria or the Marlins as a whole.
Now that it’s looked at closely, the contracts were structured so that they could dump them all after a year or two. Loria just completely FKed Miami taxpayers out of a stadium.
Thanks, and go As.
well they did the same thing with the Carlos Delgado contract in 2005 so its not like they only did it after they fucked the taxpayers.
Yeah, but this time, it’s criminal, like for real, as opposed to merely being baseball criminal.
how is it criminal for real compared to last time?
I forgot I was talking to you when I wrote that…
The Marlins didn’t open up their books prior to stadium construction and pleaded poverty and the corrupt tools in Miami-Dade went along with Loria & Beinfest’s BS. Later on, the books were revealed on Deadspin, and it was shown that Loria & Beinfest had been lying to county commissioners about their finances.
It’s my hope that this particular housecleaning will be the straw that breaks the camels back and eventually leads to a backlash that leads to a criminal investigation of Loria & Beinfest in regards to their shady stadium dealings. Although, Dade County should have done that when Deadspin revealed the Marlins’ books, about 18 months before the stadium opened. That would have made them look really foolish, tho, so maybe now they can get away with some faux mea culpas and turning the dogs on the Marlins.
Ah… ok I don’t think that the lying about the finances to get a stadium game has anything to do with the firesale game.
They should absolutely prosecute Loria if they committed fraud, as well as the fucking morons who didn’t make them open the books before giving them public money.
Wait… you think they should’ve been forced to open their books before getting public money? I’m sorry, it almost sounds like you think big businesses can’t be trusted.
Damn Liberals.
I thought what was good for GM was good for America.
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY
Remember, you’re only paying taxes because you’re poor. If you’d just make more money, you’d get to keep more of it.
Marisnick and Nicolino are pretty well regarded. I’m not sure about that other guy.
I’m kinda disappointed the A’s didn’t end up with either Escobar or Reyes.
escobar is still a possibility
And here I thought the Red Sox knew how to dump salary. Holy ungodly asshole.
Is this the best NYT restaurant review ever?
Excellent.
Who among us hasn’t asked this question at some point in our lives?
Hee
Thanks, and go As.
I don’t know why this was so exciting
FKing awesome. He beat the dreaded East Coast Bias!
Yes!! Articles like this were troubling me.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
HURRAY FOR BOB!!
Yay for Bob!
Yay Bob Melvin!
QUICK, BILLY.
Thanks, and go As.
Give them whatever they want.
Parker + ?
I’d do it, even without asking what the + is.
Agreed. Any two pitchers they want for Stanton.
Oh, absofuckinglutely. We’ll even take Yunel off your hands for your troubles.
Seriously, what would it take to make this happen?
They were one of the second leading bidders for Cespedes.
Realistic proprosal: Cespedes/Parker
Say the A’s wanted to make a deal. I would assume Cespedes is off limits. What about Reddick/Carter/Straily? I would do that deal. Would the Marlins? They inquired about Straily/Griffin for Hanley….
Why not give up Cespedes? Stanton is an upgrade, and younger too.
Because I would punch everyone.
Alrighty then.
I’d do the second deal in a heartbeat, but no way on Cespedes/Parker
Agreed with this.
Yes and I’d probably throw in Green too if it made a difference.
Cespedes Parker and Green? You dont think they could get more than Stanton for that?
Wow there is no way I do that deal if I’m Billy.
At all.
Thanks, and go As.
Me neither, but I would Reddick, Carter, Straily, Green.
Not sure they’d even take Carter, they don’t need a DH.
Thanks, and go As.
More for us!
I meant Reddick, Carter, Straily and Green. Cespedes and Parker are the two highest ceiling players on the team.
Oh i do that in a heartbeat
Billy Beane, pick up the white courtesy telephone please. Disgruntled young superstar on line one.
RUN BILLY RUN
I want to just be Billy’s Twitter Girl Friday, whose job it is to skulks the twitterverse for players that may need rescuing to the cold, concrete embrace of the Coliseum.
THAT is a dream job for you, oh man. Just sitting by the Android, waiting for disgruntlement to strike so BB can swoop in.
Haha! Leave it to BA.
I love Brett so much.
Brett is awesome!
McCarthy is a strong mentor
I only saw this because McCarthy retweeted it.
Speaking of twitter, it’s hilarious how Jeff from Lookout Landing keeps randomly tweeting “Seattle Mariners” to McCarthy. An attempt at subliminal influence?
Damn, if the Mariners are using LL to recruit McCarthy, we’re FKed. However do we compete with that?
Goat jokes. Lots of them.
Rotating taglines!
No SBN “magazine” formatting
Why not use our trump card? We have Elcroata.
We also have endless amounts of “dead sexy.”
You must mean the collective “we.” My quantities of dead sexy are quite limited.
LOL
Tweet McCarthy “Four words: Wakefield-like deal with A’s”
That’s five. Unless you don’t think Wakefield is a word.
I felt Wakefield-like was one word.
Answer accepted.
I thought it was clever because it would make him take notice of the inconsistency.
touche!
#Win
How long until the two Carloses are dealt, and Nolasco?
I mean, at this point they have to have 25 guys all making league minimum to start the year.
Thanks, and go As.
Nolasco is expected to be soon, but who are the Carloses? I didn’t know they had Carloses.
the two Carloses?
Shit nevermind, Lee and Zambrano are both FAs.
Thanks, and go As.
This is a pretty hardcore use of twitter, IDF:
That whole feed is pretty insane.
Democrats “must be looking at us like we’re the biggest f—– morons in the world,” one frustrated Republican said. “That’s what I’d be doing.”
Yes.
Heh.
Now here’s a petition I can get behind.
It’s not there anymore, but do we really need a petition?
Got to get him to hold still while everyone gets a turn.
Easy solution: once you punch him, you hold him down for the next person.
Right, but you have to hold him in such a way that the next person has access to his dick.
Hmmm. What about tying him up in a sex swing?
That would transfer too much of the dickpunch momentum and make it far less painful for him.
Damn.
You just have to watch out for people taking multiple shots at him. Not because that would be wrong, but because it was slow down the long line.
Easy solution: if you punch him more than once, you have to have dinner with Michele Bachmann.
Well hey now, we don’t want to de-incentivize giving him what he deserves.
You also don’t want to make the rest of us wait.
Actually I do. I want to pent up your rage. It’ll make you want it more and I think it’ll improve your work.
It’s called Lustgewinn durch Verzicht
We still want them to get their chance, we just want to amp them up a bit before they get it.
Hell, I’d have dinner with Michele Bachmann right now. It would be hilarious.
… and you have to agree with everything she says.
This. I wonder if I could get her to call the FBI and insist Im a Muslim terrorist between the salad and the main courses.
That depends on what you order.
if you order the salad last, you never get to it
I tried to find a picture of the line of people waiting to slug the hysterical lady from Airplane! but ran out of time, so picture that right here.
” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>
So perfect.
The second slap Leslie Nielsen gives her as he’s being pushed aside is so good.
Thank you. at work so couldn’t go to youtube. I love that the jive guys are waiting in line with bats, etc.
I was really hoping he would sign with the giants
Did he make it retroactive to 2010?
Poor FUUUU. But this was probably coming anyway.
In the alternate universe where Brian Fuentes keeps his trap shut, he’s just been signed to a contract extension, we’re debating whether the A’s might have been able to finish third if Geren hadn’t insisted on platooning Carter and Reddick in center field all year, while up in the links is a New Yorker Talk of the Town story about a former baseball manager in Manhattan who, after three years of unemployment, began graduate studies in anthropology at Columbia this fall.
Some team needs to employ him as their batting practice pitcher, cuz that guy knows how to throw some BP.
