OAK  Josh Reddick, Miles Head  -> Tampa Bay
TBR Â David Price -> Texas
TEX Â Jurickson Profar -> Oakland
TEX Â Â Hanser Alberto -> Tampa Bay
Total Hauls
Oakland: Jurickson Profar
Tampa: Josh Reddick, Miles Head and Hanser Alberto
Texas: David Price
Breakdown:
The A’s have need a shortstop for like a brazilion and a half years. Â Profar is going to be amazing. Â We can play Chris Young or Cespedes in Right Field. Â It would allow us to trade Addison Russel at the deadline next year for needed reinforcements and use probably $20M over the next three years for a DH, 2B, or a Catcher (Mike Napoli anyone?) rather than giving it to Stephen Drew, who has always been overrated based on his 2010 season.
The Rays get payroll flexibility, have enough starting pitching to replace Price, and get a 1b prospect and a really strong SS prospect to go with a Gold Glove RFer who can replace BJ Upton (either by playing center himself or putting Desmond Jennings there).
Rangers get an elite starting pitcher who is under team control for three years.
Thoughts?
Napoli isn’t really a catcher anymore is he?
Also can we trade Crisp instead? That would work better for me, and we can add Grant Green along with Head. Thanks.
Thanks, and go As.
The Rays wouldn’t take Crisp. Hes not under control long enough or cheap enough for the salary relief to make sense for the Rays to get rid of a true ace in Price
Now that I look again I’m not sure the rays are getting enough for Price.
Thanks, and go As.
This is a pretty well reasoned trade, especially as far as these things normally go.
That said, I think Texas is the team that says no to this offer.
What do you think would make Texas say yes?
Swapping Profar for Andrus?
I don’t think any of the players except texas do it for Andrus
You don’t think the A’s would do that? Seems surprising to me. A 3.5ish win SS seems like a better deal than a COF with one 4.5 win season.
But 1 pre arby year of Reddick plus 3 arby years > 3 arby years of Andrus
Cots has Andrus signing an extension through his arby years. FA beckons after 2014.
shit youre right. Its only two years.
Then there is no way either the A’s or the Rays would do it for Andrus
What kind of prospect would we need from Texas to do it, in your view?
This wouldn’t change the Rays’ piece in any way.
Odor or Alfaro?
Doesn’t seem like too much more to ask, and I think the Rangers would feel much better moving Andrus than Profar
I agree the probably would but at the same time it doesn’t make much sense that the team with the most payroll flexibility would be shedding expensive assets.
Depends on whether they have a target FA to spend all that money on.
I don’t see them trading Andrus because of cost but in order to fill a hole or two in the OF or pitching staff. Profar for Justin Upton would be kinda fun though.
I think the Rangers are looking to sell high on Andrus, rather than Profar.
As a long term matter, sure SS is a black hole, but isn’t catcher a more pressing need?
I would argue that Norris/George platoon presents a pretty ok floor to prevent uber suck.
I know the Rangers are looking to sell high on Andrus, but I don’t think that TBR would do a Price deal straight up without Profar given their cost structure.
?? I thought the A’s were getting Profar.
but Reddick solves a need for them and they can use Zorbrist there until they put Lee there.
So the reason you can’t swap in Andrus for Profar is that the A’s wouldn’t do it, not the Rays?
I mean we could. Im not sure you would want to because you are giving up a year of prearby reddick plus head for Andrus who will start to get pricey.
But they aren’t getting Profar here. I don’t understand this.
They have three needs OF SS C an all star RF/CFer should work for them
Not bad. I endorse this proposal. Now, work a deal where we get Swisher back.
Do you have 90m?
ew, gross…
Thanks, and go As.
Im not sure why you would give up something in order to pick up that option but it is Drayton Moore, GM.
yeah, it seems like a bad deal, unless the ANgles are sending most of the cash, then why wouldn’t they pu the option and wait?
Well the Angles did pick up the option.
The Royals probably recognize that they couldn’t get Santana on a 1y deal and want the flexibility if he doesn’t return to form to cut bait.
Angels sending $1M and getting Brandon Sisk
Is Santana really any better than the Royals starters? Now they’re paying him $12M to suck? I don’t get it. Angels made out great getting a free Brandon Sisk.
Draton Moore GM poeple
Well…
That’s certainly an idea.
say more?
Moar!!!
Seems extreme. And more flash than necessary.
Looking at the current 40 man roster the 2013 A’s are sitting at a $46.2 million payroll with SS and two bench spots up in the air. Pencil Grant Green in as a UT (and a minimum salary) that can play everywhere but 1B, RF and C and you’ve got your choice of options (Sogard, Rosales or a FA pick-up, preferably a LHB that can play infield and run a bit) to man the last bench spot.
I’d start by trading Seth Smith and his projected $3.3 million salary. If CCYR are healthy Smith isn’t getting in the line-up. Platoon Carter and Moss, with the guy not playing 1B that day picking up extra at-bats if and when one of CCYR gets hurt or needs a day off.
The rotation can be filled from arms the team already controls, but I wouldn’t be opposed to a 1 year signing ala Colon or McCarthy. For point of discussion, give McCarthy a 1/$4 million deal plus IP incentives. That lets the A’s bump one of Griffin/Straily back to AAA (or makes them available as a trade chip). Straily, Peacock and Ross are already on the 40 man, plus Gray should start next year in Sac. That’s plenty of depth to cover for regression/injury. (It’s possible Ross is out of options, cant check right now but Straily/Peacock/Gray in Sac still offers sufficient coverage.) Adding McCarthy bumps payroll to just under $51 million, plenty of fiscal wiggle room to add a 2nd FA SP if you do end up trading an arm in the quest for SS improvement.
If you don’t trade for a SS you could pay Drew $8 million annual to play SS. Or get Rollins in a salary dump. Or some other idea. The A’s don’t need a superstar at SS in 2013, they just need a solid contributor. Profar is certainly an exciting idea but there are simpler moves that could provide the same aggregate production if you keep Reddick on the roster.
Wait didn’t Toronto get Mike Aviles from Boston when Farrell got hired as manager?
We’re getting Yunel Escobar. I’m sure of it.
Thanks, and go As.
Tis an option…
Ross for Escobar!!
Escobar makes sense, unless you think he’s done and/or has personal issues that makes him too big a head case.
He turns 30 in two days.
He’s under contract for $5 million in 2013, plus 2 club options at $5 million each year.
He’s had rough years in 2010 and 2012, but even then he “earned” his salary per fWAR. So if he’s only a 2 Win player here on out he’s still a cost-effective option. Hell… a 2 Win SS is something the A’s haven’t gotten from the position since 2010!
I think hes a head case. I don’t want him.
Not even straight up for Tyson Ross?
Im just curious to gauge how much you don’t want Escobar.
sure id stomache that
Typo, or contraction?
it was suppose to be funny. that one i did intentionally
Just checking.
I think he’s a head case. I want him. God help me I’m a sucker for head cases. I liked Milton Bradley too.
Milton was AWESOME and I don’t care what anybody else says
Thanks, and go As.
Your ideas are the most likely scenarios, but I wouldn’t mind a superstar at SS or anywhere. The team did well without any stars last year but the idea that they can continue to outperform their fWAR by as much as they did in 2012 every year seems improbable. Unless there’s some giant flaw in fWAR that they’ve discovered.
I mentioned Rollins, possessor of the 3rd highest fWAR among SS in 2012.
What do you think of the trade though?
I’d do it in a second from the A’s perspective. I would want more if I were the Rays and there’s no way I’d trade Profar if I were the Rangers. I think the Rays were the best team in baseball at the end of the year and they have a great chance at a World Series title next year if they keep Price. If I were they, and I traded Price in this deal, I’d cut out Oakland and just take Profar and Alberto.
What would be the needed addition from the A’s to make it worth the Ray’s while?
If it was Andrus instead would you do it for all three?
I wouldn’t trade Reddick for Andrus since we’d only have Elvis for 2 years, and I’d want more than Reddick and a couple of B/C prospects for Price.
I don’t really see a fit for the Rays and A’s with Price. The only players the A’s have that may be as talented as Price are Cespedes and Russell
You think Philly would trade Rollins in a salary dump? I would imagine that they still think of themselves as contenders.
A Rollins trade is a definite possibility though. The Phillies do need outfielders.
So they’d put Galvis at SS and try to contend? I’m not seeing this.
