DFA v grover! Yay the offseason has officially begun! 312

Off the top of my head: If DFA got to Nuke the A’s

Crisp would be gone.
Balfour would be gone.
(That’s 4.5 Wins that the A’s needed in 2012)
Weeks would be gone. (Hey, not every move woulda been a negative!)
No idea if Sexy Pants makes his way to the Green & Gold.
Doubt Seth Smith shows.
(There’s another 4.5 Wins off the 2012 roster, assuming Smith wasn’t on the DFA drawing board… and kudos if he was.)

I could see Moss and Gomes fitting into your plan, but not Inge ’cause you’d have let MikeV convince you to move Barton to 3B.

Seriously though, Beane kept a core from that 2011 team to build around. He quadrupled McCarthy’s salary in spite of the risks. He kept Balfour instead of looking to make a salary dump. Suzuki, Weeks, Pennngton, Crisp and Sizemore headed to ST with starting jobs. The short term money invested in DDJ and Pig gave Beane the means to pursue Cespedes.

So I will go from top to bottom.  Crisp wouldn’t have been resigned it is true.

I would have no problem signing Sexyfeet (I wanted him to be signed for longer when we did sign him)

I would have invested in Soler

I was against the Smith acquisition because I was worried that the arms lost would expose Parker and other’s clocks early in a waster year, but I did say that platoon players that were never given a shot to play through early struggles was a market that might have arbitrage potential.  However, I wanted Seth to get to play every day to try to prove that he could hit lefties making him better trade bait.

Balfour was good this year.  However, you don’t know what kind of parts we would have been able to get back.  Considering the success of our minor league reliever throw ins like Cook and even Noberto recently, Im not so sure that such a move wouldn’t be an upgrade.

Fuentes wouldn’t have contributed -.4 WAR which would help mitigate some of the losses.  Weeks would have had a strong return off of last offseason.  Suzuki traded closer to his peak would have returned more than what most call an organizational catcher.

Suzuki, Weeks, Pennngton, Crisp and Sizemore headed to ST with starting jobs

The total production: 4.5 WAR or less than 1/WAR per player.  Same if you add Barton Balfour and Fuentes, you are at 6.5 or still below 1WAR/per player. We would have done better without them.

    One thing on Cespedes being signed for longer.

    The only other known contract I was aware of was Miami’s 6-year deal, and everything I was reading around the time of it was Cespedes wanted either a 10-year deal or a 4-year one, the latter being designed to take him into his prime free agency years.

    Not sure the A’s would have been able to get him in between those two contract lengths.

    • DFA Oct 28,2012 11:33 pm || Up

      Right, I am aware of that. I would have offered 8 years. I was concerned aobut 4 not being long enough to contend.

          This. I think one of the most societally damaging ideas there are in common parlances is this notion that if you try harder a girl will fall for you. It just isn’t true. Trying harder is creepy and you cant make someone like you. There is no such thing as a romantic commedy type ending where your flashmob dance/crashing the party/confessing your love works. There is a restraining order.

            It’s how you dangle the bucket. There’s the “only if you were the very last man on earth” — “so you mean there’s a chance?” kind of desperate persistence, but there’s also a thoughtful, confident, lead-taking persistence that many folks seem to respond-to. Sure, there has to be some biological/social attraction, but persistence can certainly be a tie-breaker among suitors. The DogMa will tell you that she liked the fact that I went after her. I’d much prefer to believe it was wit, charm and especially my Adonis-shaming physique — but she assures me that ain’t it.

            And of course, here we are, the blind — stumbling around, trying to lead each other in the dark. We prolly ought to hear from certain other commenters, who tolerate us hereabouts.

              I always wanted to see a good study about that. Are people more likely to adopt a religion, political views or team affiliation of something that doesn’t fit into their geosocial environment. I mean, all three are by choice, but none appear to be really unaffected by predetermined factors.

          Reading closely, hence my comment.

          For the record I think you’re both right/wrong. I see sexuality as a continuum (as I think DialC or GloriousM similarly commented). No one’s place on the continuum is a matter of choice. However, how much they choose to indulge/manifest all of the options provided to their spot on the continuum is something that can be a matter of choice, and can also(potentially) be influenced by education aimed at breaking down societally-instilled preconceptions and barriers.

            By continuum do you mean sort of like a rating scale of Totally gay and totally straight (for lack of more appropriate terms since there’s probably more than one scale involved) and with it exceptionally rare that anyone actually hits the absolute?

                I literally don’t know.

                Another thing that comes up is the definition of the border between what is sex and what is not sex. If sex is the narrowest possible definition of unprotected genital sex between a man and a woman, that’s one thing. If sex is an incredibly broad definition including the BDSM pantheon, human animal/primal play, and mutual as well as solo masturbation, that’s another entirely.

                If we’re using the Clintonian definition of sex as protected or unprotected genital, anal, or oral penetration, I don’t know how to label myself. Asexual, I guess. Is that on the pantheon? I hope so.

            Basically what I posited was not all of what we find attractive 100% genetic, there is some variation based on the basic place on the Kinsey scale (youll think red heads are hotter if you read lots of magazines saying that read heads are hotter). However socializing people to try to move their outcomes to one side of the kinsey scale IMO is immoral and considering how many people wouldn’t genetically be receptive to whatever place on the scale you are pushing.

            I liken the other thread to having a conversation with someone in a crowded room, other people are bound to overhear what’s being said and if you really want to have a “private” conversation with someone pick a better venue! Versus stepping on a podium in the same crowded room and speaking to draw everyone’s attention towards you. I guess seeing my name in the actual headline made it feel more like the latter. Again, you did nothing wrong. In the past it was pretty common for me to step up on the podium; now though I refrain. Its just not for me anymore.

            Maybe that will change some day and if you ever see a new piece by me don’t hesitate to jump in and be wrong. I had some epic victories over you. (Heh)

            But, please, for now I’d prefer to keep things a little bit more low key than a headline featuring You vs. Me.

              I can’t.

              Also, before you played organized ball, there was a “team cup” that was passed around from catcher to catcher. and a running helmet. Teams only had one or 2 batting helmets and three running helmets. When a player reached base, they would exchage the batting helmet with a U shaped piece of out door furniture plastic that had some elastic going around the top. Kinda like bending some hot wheels track from ear to ear and tying them on top.

              Today everyone gets a batting helmet to DOT specifications. Pitching helmets will not be cost prohibitive.

        I’m assuming that too for guys already in the bigs, but I wouldn’t be surprised if, in a few years, after something fairly lightweight/low-impact is developed and tried in the minors, some guys get called up who are used to it. In terms of the long-term, it’s a good thing for them to examine.

      I’m having some trouble with the physics. The whole point of Kevlar in vests is to catch the bullet in a web of several layers, avoiding penetration injuries (yeah, I said it), and spread the impact force over a larger area. It’s not a ‘bullets bounce-off’ situation, and the folks saved end up with soft-tissue bruises about the size of grapefruits. On most of us, there’s not much meat ‘twixt skull and cap, and I’m having difficulty figuring-out how there would be much impact-spreading beyond what the ball provides, anyway.

      That said, when I was at DuPont, they had small armies of PhDs figuring out new uses for Kevlar and testing them. The company both founded the ballistic apparel trade assn and donated certification standards developed in-house to it, the better to ensure that adequate amounts of their product would find its way into the vests, military helmets, etc.

      Any ideas, rocket scientists?

      • aardvark Oct 29,2012 7:24 pm || Up

        This is definitely not my area of expertise, but from what I understand, Kevlar has a high tensile strength for it’s weight. So it should resist deformation more effectively than most other materials. A bullet and a baseball are both projectiles.

    K-Thug of the (too infrequent) day.

    Nate is a sports statistician turned political statistician, who has been maintaining a model that takes lots and lots of polling data — most of it at the state level, which is where the presidency gets decided — and converts it into election odds. Like others doing similar exercises — Drew Linzer, Sam Wang, and Pollster — Nate’s model continued to show an Obama edge even after Denver, and has shown that edge widening over the past couple of weeks.

    Yet the right — and we’re not talking about the fringe here, we’re talking about mainstream commentators and publications — has been screaming “bias”! They know, just know, that Nate must be cooking the books. How do they know this? Well, his results look good for Obama, so it must be a cheat. Never mind the fact that Nate tells us all exactly how he does it, and that he hasn’t changed the formula at all.

    This is really scary. It means that if these people triumph, science — or any kind of scholarship — will become impossible. Everything must pass a political test; if it isn’t what the right wants to hear, the messenger is subjected to a smear campaign.

    Lucky for Sal, his work is non-political. So far.

                  Nah. It’s more a strong shelf. Either A) he’ll be another year removed from a bad injury and therefore have healed more and get back to the Drew of old. Or B) he’ll be another year removed from a bad injury and therefore still be meh. At that price, it’s not hurting us if it’s B. It’s more than I’d like, but not overwhelmingly nor cripplingly so.

                  Are we talking about 2/16 for Drew? If the A’s weren’t willing to pay Drew 1/8.65, then why would they be willing to pay him 2/16?

                  I’m pretty happy they didn’t keep Drew, but I was hoping they were going to pick up the option and have Drew decline his half, and save the $1.35M. In any case, Cespedes at SS will be fun.

                • Glorious Mundy Oct 30,2012 8:23 am || Up

                  According to Slusser, that is what happened:

                  A week after the A’s traded Cliff Pennington, their second baseman and Plan B shortstop, the team’s regular shortstop, Stephen Drew, did not exercise his rights to allow the team an option on him for next year.

                  According to agent Scott Boras, the A’s were informed in the morning that Drew would not be providing them with option rights on him for 2013. Later in the day, the A’s announced that Drew’s option would not be exercised.

                • lenscrafters Oct 30,2012 8:52 am || Up

                  That’s interesting that Drew was the first to decline. If it’s true that the buyout would have been forfeited if Drew declined + A’s accepted, then the A’s declining and basically giving away the 1.35 million to Drew is possibly a good faith gesture. A deposit, if you will, on the extension they want him to sign.

                  Of course, this theory is moot if the buyout was simply guaranteed to Drew regardless of who declines/accepts.

                • dmoas Oct 30,2012 8:57 am || Up

                  Me too. I’d further hypothesize that Boras saw the Penny trade as a bargaining chip for his client (Hey Billy, if you don’t sign my guy who’s gonna play short for you?) and declined the option to find other suitors, hoping Billy will overpay to avoid losing Drew.
