Not a great day…my dad broke his hip this morning and he’s going to have surgery on Tuesday. After he gets out of the hospital he’s going to be living with us until he’s healed up. For the next 2-3 months I probably won’t be around much on FK so I thought I’d throw up a lounge while I do some paperwork and come up with a plan on how to make this all work.

Fuckin hippies!
Sorry man. Tough on all concerned, but I bet you rise to the occasion.
You never know what life is going to throw your way…he’s helped me countless times over the years so now I get to repay the favor.
You got enough space?
That won’t be a problem…we have two extra rooms.
Everyone having their own space can only help, I’d imagine.
You seem like an awfully even-keeled fellow, which will also serve you well.
I’m going to set up the room for him tomorrow. I’m going to bring his bed from his place so that should help him be more comfortable. I’m just thankful I have my wife here to help me.
gonna put him on your golf cart to drive him crazy. “try to beat me now, OLD MAN!”
He will get to spend some quality time with his granddaughter. Plus, you can enjoy Sundays watching the Raiders together. I’m sure they won’t cause either of you any stress or anger.
You mean because watching them lose is fun?
For many people, yes.
That’s the best way to look at it.
I strongly dislike those moments when things that ordinarily happen to the elderly happen to parents.
All the best to your dad.
The Tigers might want to consider scoring a run or two if they want to win any of these games. The Giants are killing them.
This series is pissing me off so much. How did we lose to this team?
It does make you wonder…I’m sure Yankees fans are thinking the same thing.
The extra time off fucked them. Again.
Verlander + 5 games + 3″
Ditto.
Whatever the record for least runs scored in a World Series is the Tigers might break it.
I’ve literally tuned out now. It brings me no joy and not watching might help me avoid being too bitter.
I’ve barely watched it but looking at the scores it doesn’t look like I’m missing much.
Me too. It’s not helping. I was in the store when they won tonight. How did I know? They fucking announced it over the loud speaker. And quite typical I get to listen to the “fans” yap about how excited they are… to which I have to wonder: Why. Are. You. In. The. Fucking. Store. During. The. Game. If. You. Are. Such. Big. Fans. Assholes.
I made the mistake of taking the boys out to get dinner.
Amazing how many fuckbag Gnats fans have appeared all of a sudden HEY WHERE THE FUCK WERE YOU ALL SEASON LONG MOTHERFUCKER NICE BRAND NEW SHIRT
Thanks, and go As.
I left the 95.7
Orange &Black & Blue* & Green & Gold party early to go to the Hula Show, a commitment I’d made with one of my non-baseball friends three months ago when I felt that it could only be good luck to buy tickets for something else on the night of an AL World Series home game. Not only did the baseball gods not reward that sacrifice, they inspired the MC to announce the Giants win from the stage just before intermission. There were four women in front of me who were proclaiming their love for the Giants; one of them had actually been to a game. I’m not being catty, she told the other three that she’d been to a game and now understood some of the rules, which impressed her three friends who apparently had not. For example, she said, she now understood that the visiting team always got to bat first, which meant that the home team always got to bat last. “So the Giants don’t always get to bat first,” said one of her friends, making sure she understood this concept. “Yes,” said the expert, “but if they don’t get to bat first, then they get to bat last.” I was trying to decide whether to laugh or puke, but then the show started.*There were two Quakes fans there when the first of us arrived. One was also a Giants fan but they were nice.
how was the hula show? i love patrick’s work. best halau in the bay area.
It was great! Patrick was born in the same hospital as the President, a couple of weeks later, so he was inspired to write a little ditty called “The Birth Certificate Hula”. There was a lovely dance to “Word Up” and some beautiful traditional work too.
they just amaze me–love their trad and their modern stuff. so wish i could have gone again this year, it wasn’t in the cards. ;)
At this point I’m rooting for the Giants tomorrow. Rip the bandaid off quickly (and away from SF)
I’m hoping the Baseball Gods will finally get their shit together and set this up for an epic fail.
Sorry, I’ve gotta go with nm’s plan.
I think this is the only time this past year that I’ve felt grateful to be so far away from the Bay Area.
I’m going to buy a reader for my dad….Kindle or Nook?….any advice?
I’d recommend a hot girl with a sexy voice. But then he may never leave.
How many books does he own/not want? The best thing about the Nook is you can take books to B&N and trade for ereader versions.
We saw Jonathan Lethem at a City Arts & Lectures show the other night – nice because we were mostly able to dodge the WS games. One of his comments, in response to a question about reading, said that since the original kindle moved to the fire the sales & reading of online books has flattened. The fire, like the iPad, has access to other online features so their owners don’t read as many books.
I have no idea about the functionality, but I do like the idea that if you get the Amazon prime membership you can get some free books from the kindle library.
Either way, this will be your new favorite site.
omg. thank you!!!!!!
Hearty endorsement.
Normally I’d be in Kansas City tomorrow for the Raiders game. We decided not to buy tickets this year and after what happened today that ended up being the right call.
A win tomorrow would raise my excitement level for the game I’m going to next week vs Tampa. Even if it’s just a win over the Chiefs. Against whom the Raiders are underdogs.
Have fun at the game…I’ve heard we played Tampa in a Super Bowl but I have no memory of it.
Alrighty then…be well, everyone and I’ll see you down the road.
Good luck, I hope your father heals quickly! Take care, friend.
Hope everything goes well for your dad’s recovery, Bed. Make sure Bridget the Midget stays out of trouble, too.
For all we know, she’s the one that broke Poppa Bed’s hip.
That is a likely scenario!
I hope she was worth it!
Ok, I’m back from Michigan. What did I miss?
Ok, I’m back from Sydney. What did aardvark miss?
Welcome back. You both missed nuthin.
So I wore my A’s shirt when I went over to a friends last night and we walked around polk and in the midest of the biggest bro – astastic – giants bandwagon fans I got 4 fist bumps and One very loud lets go oakland chant. The girl I was with was very confused as to what was happening, and why people were giving me fist bumps.
I fucking love A’s fans.
Me and the family went to Ikea yesterday, and amid all the wretched orange and black I wordlessly high fived two passing folks who were like me in A’s garb.
Giants fans are the biggest bunch of Bro’s on the planet.
I was wearing a 49ers t-shirt here in Charleston the other day, walking across campus, and suddenly someone yelled out “WHO’S GOT IT BETTER THAN US?” I never did see him.
Man, this Raiders-Chiefs game is really, really ugly.
I’m not watching it, nor did I watch the San Diego/Cleveland tilt, but it sounded fairly fugly too.
Any game the Browns win will be, by definition, ugly.
I’m like a stalker without the energy or motivation.
You can stalk yourself from wherever you are, no matter how tired you are.
I hope that helps.
I’m not worth stalking.
This goddamned house has fleas.
:(
Gonna go pick up some borax and coat the place. At least it has hardwood floors, and Roomie sprayed some anti-flea shit on the rugs, so I just have to sprinkle the furniture and wash my clothes and sheets. I was wondering why I was suddenly getting so many bites suddenly. My feet and ankles are covered in bites that I scratch at night, so now they’re all scabbed over.
are there cats or dogs there?
Not anymore. Her dog stays at her boyfriend’s place.
then that is freaky.
It’s driving me FKing crazy.
i hope it’s not the scabies.
Thanks to Dr. Hottie, I know all about scabies. Okay, he didn’t give me scabies or anything, he just gave me a personal scabies lesson.
when my sister was in college, their whole dorm got it. fucking NASTY.
It’s pretty badass to look at under a microscope.
what does it look like?
You scrape the little bumps and put them on a slide. You see the scabies feces before you see the actual bug.
oh gawd. :(
Here’s the acutal mite:
well, it’s not all THAT ugly.
It’s actually the scabies shit and eggs that cause the itching.
The rash looks a lot like chicken pox too, but the difference is that chicken pox start on the core of the body and work their way out to the arms and legs. Scabies usually starts on the arms and legs and works their way toward your core.
when all of these kids had it, it just looked absolutely disgusting. and i felt so bad for them. but no way was i going near any of them. i think they all had to move out of the dorm and the whole places was fumigated. or something.
Here’s the feces and eggs:
that, not so pretty. :(
Ever hear of the “seven year itch”? Scabies.
heh.
I saw a couple of fleas this morning.
i’m still worried you have the scabies.
I have a friend who got scabies at a hostel in SF years ago. I really hope I don’t have them.
I’d rather have scabies than herpes.
true
I have neither. Just looked up scabies symptoms. Not me.
you have bugs and it makes me sad.
It makes me sad too. But better fleas than scabies.
this.
This discussion reminds me of one of my favorite signs from the Simpsons.
teehee
Heh. That’s certainly a possibility.
Just catching up after being gone all weekend.Wasnt going to comment but this image is too perfect.
So when dad started using last year he was convinced he had scabies. Of course the difference was they were big enough to see with the naked eye, and they were organized (they would move to and from specific spots..). When we didnt know the truth we spent a long time talking about it and what it could be. Once we knew the truth it was a good laugh/cry.
It makes sense to me. The dog had fleas, now the dog’s gone so they need to bite someone.
I don’t know how long it’s been since the dog was here, but I guess fleas can live for awhile?
Their eggs can hatch weeks if not months later.
Wonderful.
That sounds attractive.
It’s hawt as hell.
Sorry if this was posted elsewhere but YAY!!!
Go SuSlu!!!
Wrong Bob in pic though, ugh I’d almost forgotten…
Ugh. Another flat tire. I think I must have really pissed off the higher powers. Not only do I get to wait for someone to deal with it, but the person I’m waiting for winds up with car trouble themselves making me wait an hour more. And there’s nothing worse than driving down the highway on a spare and having the old folks drive past you with a look on their collective faces that you could tell were thinking “WTF?”
aaawwww. that sucks. :(
HUGS.
add my hugs to the pile.
Bummer, time for a crossword app…
Sorry.
LOL Cowboys and Giants

who is “singing” this?!?!?
wow, detroit finally scored.
So I successfully made it from DC up to Boston this afternoon/evening, with a stupid layover at LaGuardia. But my Boston->LA flight for tomorrow afternoon is canceled, and I need to get to LA so that I can continue to Sydney, Christchurch, McMurdo, and South Pole! I’ve been on hold with American Airlines for 1:17 and counting…
:(
there must be some plan we can come up with that works. can you get a fight anywhere out of the eastern seaboard tonight?
I also need to pick up a lot of equipment at work tomorrow. I’m hoping to get a Monday am flight out of Boston, in which case I will basically pull an all-nighter down at lab to get everything packed up.
that sucks. monday am probably won’t work. how far is the equipment? can you get it tonight?
No chance – the airlines are moving all the planes they can off the eastern seaboard tonight so as not to loose that fraction of the fleet.
And they’re leaving empty?
Good question.
I don’t know how many are flights in being cancelled and how many are unscheduled flights out. For the latter, you’d think there would be some way to make use of them, but no airlines computers are up to scheduling that. Ideally FEMA should be able to get some public/private collaboration going, where they fill the flights and provide overnight rations/accommodation for evacuees at the destinations, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
This isn’t like Katrina, though, is it? I mean, I haven’t paid that much attention, but Frankenstorm is forcing mandatory evacuations is it?
Definitely not like Katrina, but IIRC 375,000 from parts of NYC.
Wow, that’s a lot of people. I can tell you that we got some serious wind last night, and that was just the very outer bands. I was wheeling a flatbed loaded with DJ equipment and the wind was blowing too hard for me to hold it in place. I had to hold on to it to slow it down, and let the wind push it up against a fence.
Rent a car and start driving west until you get to an airport that’s still open.
Albany maybe?
Perhaps. I have no idea.
Welp, I’m stuck in Boston until Wednesday, then flying Boston->Dallas->Brisbane->Sydney->Christchurch.
blargh. and i would plan for thursday, just in case.
i still think you should run!
dont you have a broom and a day to get him?
needs better planning. :(
this is not surprising
Very strangely, I just found out that my brotherinlaw Phil left Boston about an hour ago in a rented car bound for an airport.
If it’s that long, I’d get a car and start rolling.
One way rentals aren’t cheap.
Phil looked into it and found that Charlotte NC was the closest place sure to have flights out. That’s like a 15 hour drive.
It’s only a 3 hour drive from here.
So the next time a hurricane is threatening your planned South Carolina to Antarctica trip, you know what to do.
Drive to Charlotte? Also, it’s my sincere hope that I’ve spent my last hurricane season in this Universe-forsaken place.
The storm died down last night around 9 or 10. The weather is nice and calm now, so I don’t think there will be any problems flying out tomorrow. I didn’t even lose power!
yay! great news!
Don’t get too excited. The Yankees still exist.
I know none of you are watching the world series. but GBA tonight is likely the worst ever.
i am listening to it. and i WANTED TO DIE. it was SO HORRIBLE.
Baseball’s over. Don’t you people realize it? And hopefully they did it on purpose to let people finally realize they should never sing that song again.
I’m flipping between the Series, the football game, and weather porn.
i’ve started my WoT reread. and i’m drinking beer.
WoT?
Kind of like Wat only more oooh instead of aaah.
Aaah.
it means wheel of time. so there.
Oooh.
I had better get a move on.
Just porn.
after my own heart
Thanks, and go As.
Boobs.
i love you
Thanks, and go As.
What are your favorite sites?
Anything free.
After my own heart.
Toe-curling horrible. Maybe this will stop GBA (although last night’s singer was good). Also, did you notice the Detroit PA guy did not tell people to remove their hats?
Good man.
There’s patriotism, and then there’s getting a cold wet head.
Wait. I thought it was hip to be square.
I don’t know what this is. But I like where his head is at.
If it has to happen, please Dog make it Scutaro and not Sandoval.
There ya go.
Dog is good.
Your sig is even more apt than usual.
LOL
Hee hee.
Indeed
Never should’ve traded that man.
Or should have ponied up the money and resigned him over letting him go stay in boston
I thought he turned down bigger money from the A’s.
thats the rumor.
then how did we not “pony up” if we offered more money
Thanks, and go As.
My question exactly.
he wanted to go to the playoffs, so natually he signed with the red sox who won in 2011 and 2012. unlike the A’s
the amount of money supposedly wasn’t significantly more compared to boston
It would also be a grave mistake to overpay, especially for mediocre player.
why? its just money at a critical position
because we would have been overpaying for a 2.5 WAR shortstop?
Hell, we can do that now if we just keep Drew!
Thanks, and go As.
Doesn’t it depend on how much it would’ve taken to sign him? Besides, when you pay too much for a player, you drive up the price for all other players.
Sagh.
Notice how quiet Detroit is right now. Compare to Oakland after the A’s were eliminated. I love A’s fans.
Historically Detroit takes its losses in stride. It’s Detroit’s victories that get ugly.
The way the A’s season ended was one of the classiest things I’ve ever seen in pro sports. It’s not fair to hold others to such a high standard.
It was amazing, like nothing I’ve ever seen.
Best fans ever.
And that’s what made it cool.
If it happened every time a team loses a playoff game or World Series, it wouldn’t have been a big deal.
The Giants’ quick win may create practical problems for me, although may give me an excuse to avoid San Francisco altogether on the day of the parade, depending on when it happens. (Alternative: It could be an epic nightmare.)
And the fact that it was so spontaneous and heartfelt.
Wednesday, I heard. My non-baseball friend was stuck on BART last time for hours. She says she’s going to take a sick day this time.
our day care is at at the 455 Golden gate. It took SLF 2 hours to get there from bart. a day to avoid for sure
I can’t really avoid it, given the requirement to go to work. I’m just trying to figure out how much extra time I’m going to need to get there (Financial District).
Damnit. I may have to see if it’s possible to change my usual Thursday telecommute day to Wednesday. I don’t want any part of driving in and out of the city on parade day. And then I can also hole up in my room and not pay attention to anything outside.
If you’re going to ambush-market a bible quote into the final frame of the World Series, couldn’t you at least find something even tangentially relevant?
Seriously. Something from Revelations with doom and lamentations.
Or something from Joshua about slaying the giants.
Lots of douchebag bandwagoners to hide on various social media sites tonight.
Thanks, and go As.
Yeah – no douchebags-come-lately here. We’re old hands.
I’m just going to avoid Facebook and Twitter tonight…
thank goddess that shit is done with. onward!!!!
When I see Larry Baer face, I’m filled with a sudden desire to club him with my sand wedge.
I was hopeful for an accident to take out both Selig and Baer at the same time.
Vintage base ball bat here.
is your season over?
Yes. And after a 5-season career, I’ve retired.
(sigh)
After eight seasons of wiffleball, I’m in the same boat.
Sounds like you’re in more withdrawal than I am. Hope you discover the next step soon! I’m still looking for mine; thinking about cricket. I have a strange urge to connect with other Indian people lately.
That sounds like fun on multiple fronts, especially if lots of languages waft across the pitch. I wanna hear a Welsh cricketeer give a running commentary in broken Bengali.
I’ve had the same strange urge.
Why is it strange?
Because it’s not usual.
For me, anyway, my parents pushed me so hard to have Indian friends, be involved in Indian activities, go to the Indian temple and generally be as Indian as possible despite being born in and growing up in the US, that I (and my sister) went the other direction, and shied away from any sort of mass Indian gathering or Indian-centric hobbies or activities or clubs.
So it’s a bit strange to have an urge to come back around.
I don’t think it’s all that unusual, though. Certainly, as I’ve aged (and had kids), I’ve had an increasing desire to explore my identity as a Jew, even moreso than my parents, who, although active in synagogue life, never did much at home beyond the major holidays. We do regular Friday night Shabbat dinners at home.
I find the exploration a good way to connect to (my past/community/my family) in a way that I can’t in my work life or in other groups in which I’m involved. It also helps me sort out why I do things how I do them based on a general connection to how previous generations in my family did them, which in some way is related to my heritage. And, thinking through that, how I can do things better.
repost, SLF article from years ago.
Crazy. Especially since Chanukkah is a minor holiday as compared to the High Holidays and Passover.
I think that story has more to do with her mom being vengeful, rather than about the holiday itself.
That was the strangers christmas issue that year, they all had to write about crappy christmases. I like this one from CHarles.
Apparently my family didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving until my sister came home from school one day and demanded a traditional dinner. It was then that my family discovered that turkey is unfit for human consumption.
so, no turkey vindaloo?
No way.
you’re doing it wrong.
Agreed. The right way to do it is to not cook a turkey.
how long do you brine it ozz?
I don’t. I’ve never cooked a turkey. I don’t plan to start any time soon. There are much more flavorful foods in the world, why waste time on something I don’t like?
Doesn’t sound all that strange. Happens a lot.
I don’t think the phenomenon is strange. Just that the feeling is strange.
Interesting. I blame the Mayans.
I think we should bond over this.
That would mean spending time with another Indian person. I’ll have to think about it.
There’s never just spending time with another Indian person. It’s always like 50 other Indian people.
So, think about it.
Fucking hell. They just had to do it in dramatic fashion.
Meh.
My neighbors are Giants fans. They also help take care of my dog when work calls.
I guess that balances out.
Sandoval the MVP? He had basically one awesome game. My MVP would be Romo – once the Gnats had the lead, he was lights-out fantastic.
Also, look out women of SF – Sexual Assault Panda has some new wheels.
yeah, this one screamed for a pitcher getting it.
The funny thing about sports loyalty is that we really do “root for laundry.”
How many of you who could bear to watch saw Scutaro coming to the plate and knew, just knew, that he would win the game?
And not too long ago, we would have been thrilled. He was our guy. Scutaro put away a Division Series for us.
But then decisions were made, including the one that led the Giants to acquire him from Colorado this season. At the time, I thought it was a very good acquisition for them.
But I’m losing my point, which is that two of the big heroes for the Giants were Zito, in unlikely fashion despite his uncanny history of postseason success, and Scutaro. I should be happy for these guys. I rooted for them for years, have watched their ups and downs, feel like I know them as much as I know any major league player who is a total stranger. And yet, part of me is miffed, because the triumph of Zito and Scutaro as talented athletes will pretty much blot out their achievements while on the A’s. That’s kind of silly, but that’s my gut reaction, even though it isn’t rational and makes me feel small and churlish and overly concerned with the outcome of sports games.
That said, good for them. Dammit.
and i say…YAY! IT’S OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It feels like when you’re in high school. Your former girlfriend is now going out with the quarterback, and she just got voted prom queen.
So, there must be some kind of traffice jam in the mission judging from all the horns. and fire crackers. and gun shots
i really wish this helicopter would stop flying over my house
Go outside and wave it away with a gun in your hand. And no pants.
honestly id love a shoulder SAM right about now.
And… this Lounge is now being read by Homeland Security.
Get out there and occu-pie.
mmmmm…pie….
also cheesecake!
Thanks, and go As.
yes please!!!
Wednesday parade – That’s going to be awful. I won’t be able to avoid it, and I am assuming that the crowds of bandwagoners (along with some actual fans) will be overwhelming and make getting to work in the Financial District a royal pain.
Sorry to hear about your dad, Bed, but it’s good that you enjoy each other’s company. The aging parent thing is difficult.
Oh, booo… :( Sorry about your dad’s hip, that’s so painful (I’ve seen, x3… have fortunately not experienced it myself). Hoping for a swift recovery — and glad he has you to help him out.
