The Lounge where it’s hip to be here. 249

Not a great day…my dad broke his hip this morning and he’s going to have surgery on Tuesday. After he gets out of the hospital he’s going to be living with us until he’s healed up. For the next 2-3 months I probably won’t be around much on FK so I thought I’d throw up a lounge while I do some paperwork and come up with a plan on how to make this all work.

            I left the 95.7 Orange & Black & Blue* & Green & Gold party early to go to the Hula Show, a commitment I’d made with one of my non-baseball friends three months ago when I felt that it could only be good luck to buy tickets for something else on the night of an AL World Series home game. Not only did the baseball gods not reward that sacrifice, they inspired the MC to announce the Giants win from the stage just before intermission. There were four women in front of me who were proclaiming their love for the Giants; one of them had actually been to a game. I’m not being catty, she told the other three that she’d been to a game and now understood some of the rules, which impressed her three friends who apparently had not. For example, she said, she now understood that the visiting team always got to bat first, which meant that the home team always got to bat last. “So the Giants don’t always get to bat first,” said one of her friends, making sure she understood this concept. “Yes,” said the expert, “but if they don’t get to bat first, then they get to bat last.” I was trying to decide whether to laugh or puke, but then the show started.

            *There were two Quakes fans there when the first of us arrived. One was also a Giants fan but they were nice.

                It was great! Patrick was born in the same hospital as the President, a couple of weeks later, so he was inspired to write a little ditty called “The Birth Certificate Hula”. There was a lovely dance to “Word Up” and some beautiful traditional work too.

      We saw Jonathan Lethem at a City Arts & Lectures show the other night – nice because we were mostly able to dodge the WS games. One of his comments, in response to a question about reading, said that since the original kindle moved to the fire the sales & reading of online books has flattened. The fire, like the iPad, has access to other online features so their owners don’t read as many books.

        Gonna go pick up some borax and coat the place. At least it has hardwood floors, and Roomie sprayed some anti-flea shit on the rugs, so I just have to sprinkle the furniture and wash my clothes and sheets. I was wondering why I was suddenly getting so many bites suddenly. My feet and ankles are covered in bites that I scratch at night, so now they’re all scabbed over.

                  It’s actually the scabies shit and eggs that cause the itching.

                  The rash looks a lot like chicken pox too, but the difference is that chicken pox start on the core of the body and work their way out to the arms and legs. Scabies usually starts on the arms and legs and works their way toward your core.

                  So when dad started using last year he was convinced he had scabies. Of course the difference was they were big enough to see with the naked eye, and they were organized (they would move to and from specific spots..). When we didnt know the truth we spent a long time talking about it and what it could be. Once we knew the truth it was a good laugh/cry.

    So I successfully made it from DC up to Boston this afternoon/evening, with a stupid layover at LaGuardia. But my Boston->LA flight for tomorrow afternoon is canceled, and I need to get to LA so that I can continue to Sydney, Christchurch, McMurdo, and South Pole! I’ve been on hold with American Airlines for 1:17 and counting…

      :(
      there must be some plan we can come up with that works. can you get a fight anywhere out of the eastern seaboard tonight?

      • colin Oct 28,2012 7:23 pm || Up

        I also need to pick up a lot of equipment at work tomorrow. I’m hoping to get a Monday am flight out of Boston, in which case I will basically pull an all-nighter down at lab to get everything packed up.

        • whimsical witch Oct 28,2012 7:24 pm || Up

          that sucks. monday am probably won’t work. how far is the equipment? can you get it tonight?

      • ptbnl Oct 28,2012 8:25 pm || Up

        No chance – the airlines are moving all the planes they can off the eastern seaboard tonight so as not to loose that fraction of the fleet.

          • ptbnl Oct 28,2012 8:34 pm || Up

            Good question.

            I don’t know how many are flights in being cancelled and how many are unscheduled flights out. For the latter, you’d think there would be some way to make use of them, but no airlines computers are up to scheduling that. Ideally FEMA should be able to get some public/private collaboration going, where they fill the flights and provide overnight rations/accommodation for evacuees at the destinations, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I was wheeling a flatbed loaded with DJ equipment and the wind was blowing too hard for me to hold it in place. I had to hold on to it to slow it down, and let the wind push it up against a fence.

                  I don’t think it’s all that unusual, though. Certainly, as I’ve aged (and had kids), I’ve had an increasing desire to explore my identity as a Jew, even moreso than my parents, who, although active in synagogue life, never did much at home beyond the major holidays. We do regular Friday night Shabbat dinners at home.

                  I find the exploration a good way to connect to (my past/community/my family) in a way that I can’t in my work life or in other groups in which I’m involved. It also helps me sort out why I do things how I do them based on a general connection to how previous generations in my family did them, which in some way is related to my heritage. And, thinking through that, how I can do things better.

    The funny thing about sports loyalty is that we really do “root for laundry.”

    How many of you who could bear to watch saw Scutaro coming to the plate and knew, just knew, that he would win the game?

    And not too long ago, we would have been thrilled. He was our guy. Scutaro put away a Division Series for us.

    But then decisions were made, including the one that led the Giants to acquire him from Colorado this season. At the time, I thought it was a very good acquisition for them.

    But I’m losing my point, which is that two of the big heroes for the Giants were Zito, in unlikely fashion despite his uncanny history of postseason success, and Scutaro. I should be happy for these guys. I rooted for them for years, have watched their ups and downs, feel like I know them as much as I know any major league player who is a total stranger. And yet, part of me is miffed, because the triumph of Zito and Scutaro as talented athletes will pretty much blot out their achievements while on the A’s. That’s kind of silly, but that’s my gut reaction, even though it isn’t rational and makes me feel small and churlish and overly concerned with the outcome of sports games.

    That said, good for them. Dammit.

      It feels like when you’re in high school. Your former girlfriend is now going out with the quarterback, and she just got voted prom queen.

    Wednesday parade – That’s going to be awful. I won’t be able to avoid it, and I am assuming that the crowds of bandwagoners (along with some actual fans) will be overwhelming and make getting to work in the Financial District a royal pain.

    Sorry to hear about your dad, Bed, but it’s good that you enjoy each other’s company. The aging parent thing is difficult.

    Oh, booo… :( Sorry about your dad’s hip, that’s so painful (I’ve seen, x3… have fortunately not experienced it myself). Hoping for a swift recovery — and glad he has you to help him out.

    There's a wild thing in the woolshed and it's keeping me awake at night.
