The A’s are looking like a pretty good bet to make the playoffs, the Giants are already in. The 49ers laid the smackdown on the Jets and the Raiders…well, the Raiders have really cool uniforms.

Lounge away if you like…

                  Yeah, nobody posted a video (too obvious I guess), but even if there were no other pink bands, just Pink Floyd alone would make it a strong contender.

                1.8 WAR in 111 innings, and he made 4.275M according to Cots.

                Assuming he doesn’t get bonked in the head again and miss time, and he recovers completely, there’s no real reason he shouldn’t be a 2-3 WAR pitcher again next year.

                Also, he’s only 28. I’d give him a 3 year deal for 15M and not even blink an eye.

                  Yeah, I agree. Odds are that he’s good for 150+ innings, and they’ll be VERY good innings. Five mil/yr would be a steal. Plus, you won’t find a cheaper decent option in the free agent market, and there just isn’t enough healthy talent in the system to replace him.

        • 5Aces Oct 1,2012 10:26 am || Up

          I know that the regression will be true, and that I am a victim of the fan problem (thinking everyone who did good will continue and those who did bad will improve). But when we talk about that I keep thinking could the middle infield be WORSE than it was for most of the year? What about catcher? I would expect some of the pitchers to fall off a bit, but I also think that is the one area we can get some help in either from the farm or in picking people up. And I dont think it is unreasonable to get a similar performance from Reddick and Cespedes. Coco and 1B I would expect to see some regression on, but we also had a huge hole of suck at 1B for the first couple of months.

          The earlier point is still the best. These will be great conversations in Dec and Jan, for now lets win ourselves another 14-15 games.

              I think it’s certainly reasonable, but it’s also just as possible that, with the offseson and Spring Training to work on things, the coaching staff may help him make some adjustments to get around his current ragey-pressing situation. I think he’s certainly worth making a gamble on keeping.

              • colin Oct 1,2012 12:28 pm || Up

                Oh yeah, keep him for sure. He’s still pre-arb, so he’s pretty useful even when he sucks. I’m just saying that it would be foolish to assume that his production next year will match this year (when he has been the best player on the team).

                • Kylianna Oct 1,2012 12:59 pm || Up

                  Oh yeah, definitely – I think it’s incredibly hard to pin the production for most of these guys for next year (except Cespedes, I firmly believe he’s only gonna trend upwards). I do believe in Reddick, though, even if he won’t be as epic as the first half, I do think maybe he’ll be a little more consistant and fall somwhere in between first half and second half Josh. Which is someone I still HELLA want in RF.

              Maybe, Yes, No.

              If Donaldson is for real, that’s not unpossible. From Inge/Sizemore, though, I doubt it.

                  Carter’s Power and short swing are 100% real. Whether he’s Dunn, Matt Stairs, or early-Giambi is tbd. That said, he’s probably a DH.

                  Pitching is a whole different can of worms, since it’s really hard to project rookies with a great first season, and also impossible to project Anderson/McCarthy/Braden, and also impossible to know what Colon’s deal is.

                  No, just driving too fast and over-swerving to get out of the way of an SUV that took a corner too wide coming toward him. I think he made the right choice, considering how much more badly he would have lost the fight with the SUV that was barreling toward him (vs. the one he actually hit that was parked).

    If the A’s win tomorrow, thus clinching a wild card spot, the players will:

    a) high five perhaps a little more vigorously than usual, but keep it all business with the division still in reach

                  I don’t think a lot of people realize what we were watching while (alliteration!) Chavez was banging out gold gloves year in and year out. I know the last one, maybe two were reputation awards, but for a few years he was really one of the best defensive 3B of this generation.

                  I was so spoiled when I was a kid and getting into sports…

                  Every year it seemed like the Niners either went 14-2 or 12-4, except for that one season they went 10-6 and missed the playoffs in 1991. The Raiders were in LA so SF was the only game in town, and I got to watch the best coach ever, the best QB ever, one of the best safeties ever, the best WR and maybe overall player ever, and another HOF quarterback following up Montana. I mean how could I not have been a Niner fan.

                  The A’s went to the World Series 3 times in a row and had the ROY like every season, Stewart Welch and Mike Moore took turns being awesome every year, etc.

                  The mid 80s to the mid 90s were just awesome to grow up in as a sports fan in the bay area.

                  Those 49ers teams were so loaded and oddly many of them ended up on the Raiders eventually…Lott, Rice, Craig, Rathman…I loved Ronnie Lott, he was great.

          At the two games I saw at the Coliseum the crowds weren’t huge but the energy level in the stands was impressive. The Cal football game on Saturday drew almost as many as the total of the three A’s-Mariners games but the atmosphere was somnolent (except when it got angry a few times).

    A 1-watt laser is an extremely dangerous thing. It’s not just powerful enough to blind you—it’s capable of burning skin and setting things on fire. Obviously, they’re not legal for consumer purchase in the US.

          I heard a talk from someone who works on the lunar laser ranging project. One problem that they had is that their telescope in New Mexico is near an Air Force base. So they got in touch with the Air Force guys and said “Look, a couple of nights a month, we are going to be focusing a powerful laser through a 2.5 meter telescope and shining it at the moon. We don’t want to blind any pilots, so just let us know when you are flying by and we will turn it off.” But the Air Force guys said they couldn’t tell them flight plans because it’s top secret. So instead, whenever they run the experiment, they have to put a guy up on the telescope with binoculars to look out for top secret Air Force planes.

          • AV Oct 1,2012 10:10 am || Up

            that’s too kind. would the enemy have a guy with binoculars looking out for top secret air force jets?
