Oh yes indeed it’s fun time, fun time! I am prepared to enjoy every bit of the ecstasy and to absorb any bits of the agony we encounter between now and Wednesday. We’re in a playoff push virtually no one though possible, and not just in it, but well positioned. Everyone should be thrilled and delighted and, sure, nervous. But mostly excited.
Grillaxing:
Beer: it’s not just for drinking anymore!
Don’t blame me, I voted for…wait, what was I saying?
Also, apparently the earth is quaking…
Unless I’m missing something, we’ve lost every game this week where we didn’t put up a grill before the game. Co-wince-a-dense? I think not!
I think I felt that quake, but when you’re on the fourth floor of an old building it can be hard to tell a small quake (2.7 about two miles away) from a big truck going by.
Details. I felt it here in downtown Oakland, but might have dismissed it as a door slamming shut had someone near me not said “Earthquake!”
oooh. the new USGS earthquake map is pretty neat. except the time zones. except, does it really only give two options (and are we in UTC-7)?
I think we’re UTC -7 during daylight savings time, -8 standard time.
7 now, 8 when we move the clocks back
so presumably, the USGS is in our timezone too, and they will adjust to match us? hurray for scientific cali-centrism!
System time may mean the user’s system time, which a web page can get via javascript.
ah! OK. hurray for my-computer-centrism!
The quake folks are mostly in Menlo Park.
This ought to speak for itself:

i can’t tell if this has been grilled before or… omg, flashback!!!
Could be both
Heh, missed that.
I’m going to the ballgame stag tonight and don’t have my ticket yet. Anyone else going, want to join me, have an extra, want to avoid me, etc?
i’m going to the box in about an hour to buy for wednesday… undecided about tonight because my friend’s band is playing around the corner from here. i think i’ll decide once at the box.
I’m on my way in about an hour but have a fancy Sec. 118 ticket. Pregame consumption of adult beverages would be cool.
I’ll park in the new regular lot spot (Lot A, Row 12, towards the slough, near the misleading “A8” sign). Probably be there around 5:30 or so.
I’ll recheck this thread when I get down there but that sounds about right. Also seven seven five two nine two zero eight eight seven.
In town and on my way over shortly. I was expecting “warm” but I guess they’re saving that for tomorrow and Sunday when I’ll be in the sun for day games.
You’ve given up on the Bears, or is that your day game on Saturday?
I couldn’t miss the updated Memorial Stadium in its first year, so tonight was the A’s, Saturday is Cal and Sunday is back to the Coliseum. I hoped Cal would get a night game but that didn’t work out.
Yeah, forecast was for 70 here, but the fog never lifted and I don’t think it got much above 60.
They’re still saying mid-upper 70s for tomorrow, and upper 70s-low 80s for Sunday, for whatever that’s worth.
I’m going, I have a ticket voucher to redeem so I don’t actually know where I’m sitting yet.
I believe some folks are meeting up in the WSC around 5:30 or so.
Thanks, and go As.
I would very much like to avoid you. My strategy will be to stay in San Francisco this evening.
clever
We’ll be in our usual row (um, pronounce that to rhyme with “throw,” not “how”), if you want to get a ticket either near or far from us. Alas, we have no extra…
If Mr. Poppy is able to leave work early enough, we might also be visiting with the gaggle of folk that plan to congregate in the WSC pregame.
Going but don’t have my tix yet. I’ll pick it up when I get there & likely for the rest of the homestand.
Linked before, but it’s a travesty that beer article skipped the real pioneers.
RE: Potential tiebreaker game…
Apparently, I can get my usual seats (215 – 12 – 8+9) at my usual price ($17 each) for the tiebreaker game, which will be on Thursday 10/4 if necessary, at a time TBD. Regardless of the time, I won’t be able to go, because I’m already taking Wednesday off in order to go to THAT game.
So… anyone want to buy my tiebreaker tix from me for $34/pair?
Yes. Email me.
go A’s
Careful, Brenarlo.
Wait, I’ll be banned if I don’t sell you my tickets?
That seems fair.
Phil Collins Erotic Fan Fiction. Speaks for itself, really.
I assume that’s Bed’s site.
My thoughts exactly.

The Romney campaign continues to impress in ways big and small.
Ridiculous miss-micro-targeting, as most folks who do have Lyme, don’t know it — but at least the ad raises awareness, I guess.
We’ve bored lotsa folks around here with tales of The DogMa’s treatment travails for Lyme and associated nasties. I won’t repeat those — yay — except to say the Feds could help if CDC recognized the chronic form of the disease, and the states could help it they’d quit threatening the credentials of Docs who do recognize, and treat it with LT antibiotics. Of course, the ad really doesn’t go to either of those points.
Not that I’m complaining, but doesn’t it occur to any of his supporters that Willard’s failure to run a competent campaign reflects poorly on his vaunted business savvy that’s supposed to save us all?
Do you know if the chronic form of Lyme is contagious in any manner?
There is some suspicion that it may be sexually transmitted — Sue’s Lyme literate doc (Stricker in SF) has 100 or so couples among his 600 patients; FWIW the “spirochete” bacterium is said to be similar in form to the bug for syphillis. I tested + a few years into our relationship (for Lyme(!)) and was treated, successfully we think. Now, you could as easily say that couples do similar things that expose them to ticks, like hiking, so maybe it was two independent bites, etc. There’s a whole lot of research that has yet to be done, in part because the NIH/CDC refuse to take it as seriously as advocates would prefer.
Hmm, alright. Thanks.
Just looked up that doc. Woof, those are expensive visits! And I don’t understand why they won’t accept any kind of insurance. So much for that I guess.
Sue knows more than most — if you want to discuss any of this with her, I’ll send you her cell #. tfcmail@gmail.com. There’s also a local support group that shares experiences, ‘scripts (shhhh), etc. Doc doesn’t take insurance because most insurance won’t cover chronic Lyme consultations. Sue has a helluva time getting her prescriptions filled, as well, and some of them are gawdawfully expensive.
I guess that makes sense. I know it’s not an easy process for any side. Might take you up on that though. It’s more one of those “probably should but probably won’t” kind of things for me, so we’ll see.
Ugh – this clown is running the WORST presidential campaign of my lifetime, and I was around for McGovern in ’72 and Mondull in ’84.
the thing is, there is such a rock solid floor of 190 EC, its not ever going to look like those trouncings.
what’s a 190 ec?
Electoral College votes
ah. google didn’t work on that. i momentarily thought it was an espresso machine.
And, Rmoney has an insurmountable lead in square mileage, too — over 2 million to one million, with only 400K in-play. Fortunately, despite the GOP’s best legislative efforts, vegetables and minerals can’t yet vote, directly. And the definition of ‘voter’ still extends past propertied white males of majority age, at least for now.
I really want to see a few “shocking” flips of some of those.
what about dukakis?
Based on the inability of schools all over the east and upper midwest to teach mathematics, ‘t appears we have one or two extra reg-season parking passes (will next Tu be free? Will these passes work for a potential TH tiebreaker? All confuddled).
So, if anybody wants one you can either bring the $9 face value by Sec 118/22 tonight, or call me, maybe and I’ll find you — especially if you’re in line for a beer of any variety and wanna trade one of those for it, instead. 415.307.1600.
I generally just give my extra(s) to the lot attendant at the last game I’m going to, and tell her/him to use it for the people behind me…
(And, based on the fact that the tiebreaker ticket offer I received was exactly for what my regular-season tickets are — seatwise and pricewise — I would guess that the parking passes for regular season do also apply to the tiebreaker game.)
You, Madam, are a great American. Do you do that at toll booths, too?
No, because some guy once got really mad at me when I chucked my FasTrak transponder out the sunroof for him at 40 mph.
That lazy sack of shit.
Ever the Romantic, you are!
This would be helpful for me for Sunday. 118/28 tonight so I think we can manage.
— sold — and there is free parking next Tuesday AND the reg season passes will work for the tie-breaker.
Okay, so I am kind of a dumb puppy about the tiebreaker nonsense.
1) If it doesn’t get played, do they just automatically refund your credit card, or do you have to actively do something for your refund?
2) Do season ticket prices apply?
They probably refund your credit card… and yes, season ticket prices seem to apply.
I apparently made an invisible post, above, or else no one wants two awesome seats for $34/pair.
With all the baseball-driven work flakery I’ve already planned for next week, getting out of work Thursday also is probably more than I can manage.
Excellent. :D
And I am a lone wolf, pairs of tickets are for other people that have friends.
Yes, they’re usual price – my bleacher seat was $9 and not reserved. I believe they will automatically refund your card.
Meaningful baseball! Last week of the season! I’m kind of freaking out here. In a good way. I haven’t even had time to watch the season premieres of all the TV shows that I keep up with, since I have IMPORTANT BASEBALL GAMES to keep track of every night. It’s pretty great.
Any of you have HBO on your TV service? I’m trying to figure out if they play the season 2 episodes of Game of Thrones in a fairly frequent loop. I’d subscribe for a month or two to see the most recent season before it is out on DVD.
I added HBO just recently but haven’t really looked. I can check that out for you tonight.
I would love that if you could take a look! I know some channels play the same things over and over and over, so it would actually be to my benefit if HBO is running GoT into the ground.
If you know someone with a subscription and can borrow their cable provider username/password you can access HBOGO, which has all of both seasons permanently available online.
Thanks for idea! Unfortunately I’m sort of in need for a different reason. My parents are coming into town for a week in November and we always struggle to find movies, etc. to watch that everyone can agree on. I thought since we all love GoT I could tivo the episodes as I see them and then I’d have some ammo to fend off the inevitable stress of finding something appropriate. They might balk at huddling around my laptop!
Can’t you connect the TV as a laptop display?
Um. Uh. I guess someone with A/V know-how might be able to. Is it easy to do? The technology I own doesn’t tend to be “state of the art” so I don’t know if I have the right inputs.
If you have an HDTV you can likely do it pretty easily with an HDMI or DVI cable depending on what you have on your laptop. Either way, it’s relatively easy to do.
You can do RCA cables if it’s an even older TV too
Yeah, that would be me…
It should be straightforward with the right cable … what kind of sockets do you have on the laptop and tv? Or what are the makes and models of each?
I’ll check tonight and report back for advice!
What these people said. It should be really easy. The only issue would be some laptops get a little antsy at the addition of a second monitor, so you just have to poke things for a minute or two.
I just checked, the entire first two seasons are currently on their OnDemand which means it’s likely Online accessible but it’s not looking like they have any showing soon.
:( sad panda.
But if you subscribe to them for a month wouldnt you get the ondemand and could then watch it anytime during said month?
Yup.
They do frequent marathons on one of their channels.
Wooooo!!!!!!
If you’re looking to watch them at a certain point in time and are willing to pay for HBO, you can always watch them On Demand with your subscription.

Thanks, and go As.
Ditto.

I just throw the whole thing away.

This.
still turns brown…
You just had to go there.
That joke would have killed in my house.
it was the fiber.
:)
Out of sight, out of mind, eventually out of body.
And btw: The tip I’ve heard for how, besides lemon juice, to keep guacamole from getting brown — leave the avocado pits in it — DOES NOT WORK.
Nope. So stop leaving them in the guac!
People leave the avocado pits in their guacamole?
Yep.
That’s embarrassing.
but isn’t the point that the pit lessens the exposure to air, not that “pits prevent browning”?
I’m pretty sure I heard advice HERE that I should do that…
i do that… it works… everyone that says otherwise is a fascist
I am ready to call it a week, and some FKer schedules a meeting at 3 to talk about why his people are unique snowflakes and shouldnt have to follow an established process.
It has been a really long week and I am hoping I do not find a way to get myself fired during this call.
Mute button is your friend.
My better friend was their boss got on the call. And while they are myopic managers who are seeing an individual tree, the leader was able to actually see the beautiful forest we have created for them. And one of my newer people actually added value on the call! A win-win.
I hope Disney Pooh gets put on his fat ass.
you just had to go there.
there‘s probably a comma missing, but yes, they do suck.
His grandmother was burglarized? Yes, that’s bad, but not the same thing as what he was reported yesterday to have said, that she was robbed.
Dallas is so real.
Batgirl, let me just say as we head into this weekend that I am way too elated about the A’s to be able to take the time to talk shit about the Broncos Sunday. Though I did hear that Peyton operates puppy mills in the offseason and chose Denver because the climate will make the puppies’ lives more miserable. Just what I heard.
Also, I heard he just added Michael Vick as partner and Chief Operations Officer.
Really? That’s the nicest thing I’ve evar heard about Peyton Manning.
That, and he has a noodle arm now.
I’ve heard his passes look more awkward and tentative than a 6th grader at a school dance when a slow song comes on.
Like all Raider fans, you lot are hateful, rude people. And you smell bad. Like really bad. I can smell your vile stench right through the interwebs and it sickens me to my very core.
Best wishes and go A’s!
I… agree with both sides.
Best wishes and go Niners!

Heading off to the ballpark. If anyone wants to post the new gamethread early I’d appreciate it, as phone-comments from the parking lot are easier for me in a post less populated by comment threads.
Apparently according to Politico America is a hipster now?
a stiff relic of pre-ironic america… isn’t a NKOTB teeshirt that you forgot to wash for three or five weeks and are wearing anyway.
NKOTB?
new kids on the block. don’t tell me they’re completely before your time!
Oh, they were.
boy bands are kylie’s dept
…until they start making NKOTB cardigans.
Oh snap!
but she actually (maybe) likes them. you’d be wearing it ironically.
Only wear NKOTB stuff ironically if you want the legions to descend like maenads running down from the hills after a Dionysian ritual to rend the flesh from your bones.
No one disrespects our manband.
that answers my maybe. and you’re awesome.
DFA has a lack of cultural awareness, it’s cool.
if it was important I would have been aware.
Apparently not.
OMG IT’S ALMOST WINTER IT’S ALMOST COLD ENOUGH TO WEAR MY NKOTB SCARF.
