I’m really liking Chris Carter.
Another quality AB for Chris Carter.
I didn’t make the thread because mine don’t go so well for the A’s.
Don’t be skeered.
I was working on a game thread, but took too long. So I’ll just join in here.
Feel free to edit and add stuff.
I don’t have editing type privileges.
Well, damn.
I don’t either. Any longer.
HAHA! Oh, wait.
Good to see you here anyway.
[psst! why do you lie to him?]
[blinks]
[hands dmoas some eye drops]
[lubricates]
Uh. You’re not going to want those back.
you people are weird.
[Yes]
exactly.
And, as an aside, I think that muppet is the muppet representation of my brother.
Heh, my brother was just like Bert.
Rosales rewards BoMel for inserting him in the lineup by delivering a clutchy, gritty 2-out RBI hit.
Are you calling him short?
Schlong, on the other hand, is perfectly predictable.
Meh. No two are exactly alike.
But I like them all.
But our Schlong has problems rising to the occasion.
Orioles already 3 up against Sale.
I want to host the Orioles 10/5 if the Rangers don’t collapse or Seattle doesn’t go batshit insane and take the 2nd spot.
Even better, the Yankees collapse, the Rays win the east, and the Yanks don’t even go!
The Yankee fan reactions would be priceless.
BOOBIES.
Also, w00t.
Also also, why does Shelley Duncan keep getting opportunities to play in the major leagues?
I thought she was excellent in The Shining.
and so hot in 3 women.
Nepotism?
different duncan right? I thought chris was the only kid of dave?
Both are.
Nope. Brothers.
He kinda resembles a massive Brandon Inge.
CLANK!!!
Not any more.
heh
Evidently if you are in the Navy and get in trouble you can choose between KP duty or spending your shore leave in Cleveland.
You can also sail the seven seas.
You can also set your mind at ease.
In the navy!
thank you, dmoas.
you going Saturday?
Not sure. Day of sort of deal.
I see. So…no, then.
Quite unlikely.
This is why my cousin used to get the good jobs while on the Saratoga, like peeling potatoes, going out on the flight deck to pick up the mail (and narrowly missing getting chopped to pieces by spinning propeller blades), and nearly getting shot by a Marine when he wandered into the nuclear weapons storage area.
That could happen to anyone.
that’s what I said after the cops found me with my pants around my ankles.
You were in Toy R Us.
Well yeah, but he was in the adult section.
And it’s true. Anytime you drop your pants, you’re at risk.
storytime with bloomie please
Tewl us a story Bloooomieee.
[sigh]
okay, you kids tucked in?
Here we go…once upon a time, long, long ago, when people wore pajamas and lived life slow…
Apparently, I really was quite warm and the quickest, most efficient way that I could cool off was by removing my pants. Made sense then. Makes sense now.
He failed to see things from my perspective.
I feel he was being quite unreasonable. I feel like you should have peed on him and/or his patrol car in protest.
i’ve been wondering where the ocean is in cleveland…
Get dirty, Rosie.
Oops. I hate eastern games. I always forget until they’re halfway over and I’m still not able to watch… :(
[sagh]
How are you doing?
Oh yeah, I was also unable to gamethread…
I’m doing much better, thanks :) I worked at home Monday & Tuesday and went back in to office today. Can’t find comfortable sleeping position (at least nothing comfortable for more than about half an hour), but otherwise feeling better.
Glad you’re doing better!
I just had that exact same experience, but my disappointment was mitigated by teh first thing I saw on Gameday having been B.Moss’s homer.
Wait, why would the A’s need someone to play center behind Coco when rosters expand? What’s wrong with Cespedes?
Idiots forget he’s on the roster.
Ok that ball was hit hard.
He’s a Mosster!
“and he just crushesed it” —ray fosse
…from Bill Lee’s Deadspin chat
So is that Gio or Henry Rodriguez?
You’re back!
heh
Suzuki?
A 4-0 lead? We built that!
Wow, the Tigers get MIN/KC their last 13 games of the season.
What? Scheduling is stupid.
Plus 6 against Cleveland in the first half of September.
Yup. Detroit has the easiest schedule going forward. ChiSox second easiest.
Burn on, big rivah…
So was that an error or a double?
Ruled 2B, I think. Should’ve been caught though.
Stephen Drew has been getting on base a lot, no?
Stephen Drew a walk.
(4 walks & 5 hits so far)
I’m starting to want to bring him back. I don’t see them picking up his option, but maybe there’s a 2 or even 3 year extension to be reached at a modest annual salary? We have no other good SS options for the next two or three years unless Addison Russell turns out to be A-Rod.
I’d be ok if the A’s brought him back so they can use prospects to instead pursue a third baseman (Headley).
LEAVE DONALDSON ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Assuming today holds up, the A’s would be 6-1 since Drew starting playing for the team (but teh chemistry!).
I figure chemistry is like the bubonic plague or crabs. If Drew hangs out in the clubhouse enough and sits on the same couch, he’ll catch it.
Leth do it Theth!!!!
That thucked.
Theriouthly
Wtf Milone
BooYah!
That was impressive.
So was that.
I’m pretty sure the A’s had 0 opposite field HRs from rhhs from 07-11.
Say this about Carter: He’s a powerful human being.
So they changed the Chevy ‘spark’ commercial I see. I guess it was awkward to continue featuring Jemile Weeks.
I tuned in just in time to hear the chorus o’boos from Cleveland fans. Melodious!
Well check you out, Chris Carter.
I’m really liking Chris Carter.
Great time for Trogdor and Moss to get hot again.
That was an impressive echo.
12 HR in 175 PA isn’t quite his initial pace, but it’ll do. Especially since he’s looking like more than just a TTO guy.
Vince’s insistence on saying “Oh-10” is really irritating.
Okay, tha-theads: rank the following 10 A’s players by HR frequency this season (I did HRs/500 AB):
Cartere
Ceespeedees
Coco
Donaldson
Gomez
Bernie
Moss
Grizzlie
CrimRod
Thmith
— will spoil later.
Moss
Carter
Gomes
Schlong
Cespedes
Bernie
Theth
Norris
Coco
Donaldson
Mighty damclose.
Shyte — now I gotta recalc.
Vince
’s insistence on saying “Oh-10″is really irritating. As is a reply FAIL.
I can not, I will not, listen to Vince anymore. Even forgoing the game and reading about it in the paper the next day is preferable to the torture that is listening to Vince. Ugh.
Just come here and follow gameday. You’ll get the gist.
We were in the mountains last week but got the games on radio — the Vincely fellations of the Rays in general, and some reliever in particular, were just too much. Hadda turn it off.
How dare you! I had Cust in mind when I wrote “rhhs”
Well, maybe this works as a stand-alone…
6 runs in 1.1 so far for Verlander.
5 consecutive hits in the bottom of the 2nd.
Fortunately for Verlander once every 9 batters Francoeur comes to the plate – he’s made the 3rd out of both innings so far, stranding 3.
Why are the Royals still playing him
Maybe he’s the only one can procure bacon?
Because if you’re gonna lose anyway, you might as well play an outfielder whose smile IS LIKE THE SUN.
Oh, Cleveland.
Ya know, grotesque Chief Wahoo aside, I bear no ill will towards the Cleveland ballteam and city, and I kind of feel bad for their pathetic state.
But much better them than us.
Yup.
Hey. At least they have LeBron.
Ohio has Robert Pollard.
That’s good enough for me.
Agreed. Cleveland’s too pitiable to hate.
I wonder if the Indians fans have grounds to file a lawsuit.
Adam Rosales runs harder to first on walks than he does on strikeouts that get away from the catcher.
He got tagged and was being honest with his body language until he realized the umpire didn’t know he got tagged.
Straily pulled after 2 2/3 innings, 6 runs, in Sacto.
(In Colorado Springs)
Even still, I’m thinking we’re good in terms of starting pitching. I’d rather not rely on him for a pennant race. If we fall out, I wouldn’t mind him picking up a few starts, but I’d think Griffin would be first in line if we need someone.
True. It’s pretty much the first time Straily hasn’t pitched well this year in the minors, all the same.
He’s put on a lot of innings. As long as we don’t need him, I’d pencil him as a candidate for next season and avoid pushing things with him.
The A’s were rumored to have “serious interest” in Randy Wolf before he went to the O’s today. Perhaps that interest has now shifted to Bedard.
Weird. I wonder what for. I don’t mind Bedard in theory. He’s not exactly good anymore, but as insurance, that wouldn’t be too bad. If we could snag him and bring him in after the rosters expand, it’d be nice to have cannon fodder in a blow out.
I actually think Bedard could be good though. I’d rather have him start instead of Griffin/Straily/Blackley the rest of the way. At the least, he’d be good McCarthy insurance.
The way Blackley is pitching, for some reason I trust him more. If Griffin can keep up doing what he did pre-DL, I’d think he’d be a better fit. Even still, Bedard in the Coli wouldn’t be a bad fit. Certainly not against picking him up since he’d be ultra cheap.
I still think that’s a smart upside play.,
Works for me.
Drew is a huge upgrade over Pennington.
If you record a radio ad and suggest that people come to your website for more information…it might be a good idea to SPELL THE NAME OF THE WEBSITE.
(Thinking of the one where the family members are fighting about the trust; the lawyer says “Visit my website at McKeenaCambra.com”. Or something like that but damned if I can figure out what it is.)
Or buy a URL that’s easier to say on the radio than the name of your firm…
Funny, this reminds me of how I went for years and years thinking that the law firm that always sponsored NPR programs was Leafka Brasier Hyman and Bernstein.
I barely know her.
Aw, this makes me sad.
I think I would enjoy watching Godfrey try to “get even” with the A’s if the Astros run him out there as a starter next year.
Oh god, pretty please?
I guess it’s good that he’s retaining confidence in himself. Except that he probably really isn’t.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him have a few good years in relief for a shitty team eventually.
I would.
I wouldn’t count on it, but wouldn’t be surprised. He’s had some AAA success so it’s possible he can have a year or two of something other than garbage in short spurts.
Huh?
I take it he cleared waivers. I assume he’ll stay in Sacramento to help the River Cats’ playoff run. But meanwhile, if U expected someone to claim U, U get drunk and U start tweeting.
yUp
Huh.
I still like his Real World plan. Probably suited more to his talents.
Thanks to that timely cut to the bullpen, looks like Grant Balfour just got done in the bathroom.
you people are fun, but I’ve got a class to go teach now.
exactly.
You know, a room full of recently convicted drug addicts is an easier room than you’d expect.
A captive audience?
apparently. Which is evidently not true on the internet.
why don’t you call me when… you have no class.
Not bad, Tomaso.
Rollo Tomasi?
I’m not sure I’m going to make it to Target Field this trip – the only possible time is Thursday night and there’s an excessive heat warning for that day. Supposed to be at least 95F. Yuck.
It shore is purty though.
It is, pity about the team though.
Weather goes that high?
What.
Plus humidity! Fun!
That’s why the valley is alright. 105 with no humidity is way more tolerable than a humid 90.
…that and the whole damn country would starve without us!
The other reason is that it’s the geographical feature in the US that most resembles a vagina.
Arizona called …
…they disagree.
Holy shit, that’s awesome.
Then again, you can’t see it from space like you can the valley.
Sounds like a perfect day for an Izzy’s.
I see that Weaver is starting tonight for the Slegna, which should rule him out for Oakland, which is nice to see.
Woot!
Eeeeeeeeexcellent.
Speaking Excellent. Did you hear ABC green lit a Joss Whedon run S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show?
Huh. I did not. That could be neat.
what does shield stand for?
Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate.
Just giving away runs it seems.
I sorta feel bad for them.
Yeah, this is getting downright sad.
-143 run differential if the shutout holds
I will commence feeling bad for them after we finish playing them tomorrow.
(Thursday)
No one tells me when to start feeling bad!
It’s a morning game, so you can start feeling bad at lunch.
The A’s worst enemy the next couple games has to be overconfidence. This is just brutal.
Well, in the last couple nights the A’s have done just about everything except giving the Indians smallpox and syphilis.
And the series is only halfway done!
Judging from the way the Indians are playing, I wouldn’t be so sure of that.
If I’m not mistaken, we just officially eliminated the Indians from the post season.
I hope they at least leave them with the wishbone, because the A’s are feasting on everything else.
Nope, not gettin bored with all the winning yet.
#thingsIexpectedtoseein2012
Rays lose.
I have forgotten how to scoreboard watch
Can the O’s & Rangers start losing now? Please?
i’d rather the tigers and Chicagos lose
I’m okay with them losing. But I want separation from everyone above/near us.
Royals take the lead in the eighth…
Jeezus. The Royals closer with a real Kochian performance. But the Royals prevail!
wooooooooooooo
I’d rather everyone except us lose.
There was a part of me that was really hoping for the Rays to sweep the Rangers.
I feel full of sadness.
Me too.
Everyone is too clustered and playing each other to know what outcomes are best for the A’s right now. I feel like I’m just looking at other teams’ matchups and saying Go…um…somethingthatwillultimatelybegoodfortheA’s
Let the A’s keep winning and the rest will sort itself out in the end.
This-we go undefeated the rest of the way and we win the west without breaking a sweat. Hell they may make a movie abut it.
I heard John Grisham has been following the team all year in the hopes of writing his next book, Lawyerball.
Yeah, but did he predict in March that they’d finish the season over .500?
That’s the best way to do it.
Root for the games to be poignant and interesting and go our way in the long run, and let accident/will/deities/algorithms/faith sort it out.
In case you were wondering about the Aussie slang, here’s the list from All A’s:
Barbie = Barbecue
Bikkie = Cookie
Bogan = Redneck
Pash = Kiss
Fairy Floss = Cotton Candy
Thongs = Sandals
Slab = Case of Beer
Sanger = Sandwich
Dunny = Bathroom
Corker = Something Excellent or Striking
Cozzie = Swimsuit
Stubby Holder = Koozie (Blevins/Cook guessed Koozie for Cozzie and they said that’s a Stubby Holder)
This was an excellent All A’s.
The Olympic sports segment was hysterical. Poor Derek Norris’s body hair.
Yeah, that was a highlight of funny, too.
And yep, Balfour’s good with the kids.
Biccie (from biscuit) and cossie (from costume).
I’m using “slab of beer” every chance I get.
Just plain “slab” should do ya.
Kind of funny to see a photo I took of Shelley Duncan back in 2007 showing prominently on Google. The site hosting it? Well, a little scary.
And by “hosting it” I mean swiping it to show on their own place. At least they left my credit on it.
Chris Carter is a goddamn MAN.
That is all.
Thanks, and go As.
The look on the pitcher’s face after the homerun was priceless. “He hit that…there? Well, shit.”
Dammit, Trout is good.
Fk you Aceves, fk you!
They better show this ineptitude against us.
i just talked for the last 13 hours straight. missed the game too. i like the score. godamn balmore though. do they not know?
guy i was working with… he’s never seen aguirre nor fitzcarraldo. never.
people are weird.
and someone stole the front wheel off my schwinn cruiser last night. while it was locked in the side yard at home. they didn’t get the back wheel because after they managed to get one bolt off but stripped the other one. and they left the redline stem and handlebars.
people are idiots.
herringbone over houndstooth, all day every day.
rafael and mauro don’t like each other. it’d be like wac and nevermoor having contracts out on each other.
i want editing power. good night.
They do. I have both contracts. I’ll eventually get to them, but probably not until they’re both long gone.
Another reason you should come to the party Saturday.
did jeffro make the jump to FK? this NBP entry is pretty solid.
That was extremely well-written.
would love to see the same be done to SJ’s prospects. Quite frankly they aren’t great either.
Yes, that’s the bias issue in a nutshell. This level of analysis of SJ’s flaws literally never appears on that site. For instance, the concerns about private finance are exactly as murky for an SJ park as they are for Oakland. The unresolved EIR issues in SJ are real, traffic especially, and the related need to fund infrastructure improvements is probably worse in SJ.
This just reads like the same old empty lament to me. Oakland’s efforts to keep the A’s are not being developed to appease bloggers. Sorry.
Sure, but I do think it’s fair to say criticizing specific Oakland plans is different from trolling, which was the message I got from the article.
I think you might be missing the difference. The problem is selling Wolff as the owner to stay. That’s the reality Oakland faces (as unfair as that may be). SJ doesn’t need to sell Wolff. He’s already ready and willing. Whatever financial scheme that’s necessary he either has his own ducks lined up or he’s willing to take that gamble. Whether either of those things are good, bad, or ugly for SJ or anyone else besides he & MLB, none of it matters, he’s beyond willing to commit to the process and make it happen. But Oakland’s selling point continues to be “Hey, look how great the A’s could be for Oakland, build here!!!” without ever selling how Oakland can be great for the A’s.
Prediction: Wolff will not be the managing partner (ie public face of ownership) two years from now.
I’d take that bet for simple bragging rights.
Wolff has to sell the MLB which hasn’t happened and is unlikely to.
Huh?
Wolff doesn’t get to build in SJ unless he can convince the other owners not just that SJ is better (for him) than Oakland, but that Oakland is not even viable. So far he has evidently failed to do so.
Ah. Not the only course, but yes. And I’m sure he’s been doing quite a bit of that. Given their 28 individual needs, speculation on what that might be isn’t really worth the time or effort. But who knows whether he’s actually failed with that or not. I actually agree with Selig in that the situation is a lot more complicated than it has any right to be. For all we know, the votes are there and Selig just wants to be fair to both sides with the process (and make sure it won’t bite him in the ass).
Yes, this is nothing new.
i’ma pour (or sump) a lil out for NOLA and environs by rewatching the big uneasy and eyeing every word the
wetlands and river killersarmy corp of engineers utters as a cost/risk-managed lie.dammit. meant to link this.
hear hear!
i knew the sacto contingent would sympathize.
When I bought up here, I did my best to avoid a location that’s in one of the flood zones. I succeeded.
I love how chill Carter always looks.
[just standin’ here, watchin’ the pitcher]
HIT BALL HARD
RUN RUN RUN
[takes off batting gloves]
[just standin’ here, on second base]
I honestly don’t — DONALDSON!!! — know if I’ve ever been as happy as I’ve been for the progress Carter’s made.
He’s gone from clueless last year to damn near unshakable this year, SO impressed.
I still maintain the way they handled him last year was about the worst thing they could have done. I know I have the luxury of saying it since I’m not involved, but I don’t even consider last year a real chance for him. He basically got one week up here during a time the A’s were around 10 under .500 and was sent right back down until the end of September for a few more games.
Agreed, I feel that way about Brandon Allen and Michael Taylor this year.
Taylor maybe, but Allen was pretty terrible here last year and maybe they did get rid of him early, but he hasn’t even hit in Japan. Just a dozen games, though.
The Taylor thing this year was really dumbfounding.
I’m not that bothered by how they handled Carter last year. He came up and looked absolutely lost at the plate and they gave him a pretty good (and ugly) run. He went down with a much better sense of what it took to be a major leaguer and likely with quite a few things to work on. When he came back up he hadn’t quite gotten a handle on it, but improved. Same with Spring Training. By the time he came up this year, he really was prepared both physically and mentally.
For me it was more the attitude by some that this was Carter’s last chance. I just don’t think he had enough time last year for it to legitimately count, the one awful week factored in.
It’s definitely to his credit that he’s turned himself around since then.
I wonder were he’d be had they started him more frequently this year earlier in the season, I seem to remember a couple of games he’d absolutely crushed the ball only to be benched for few games…
Yeah, it’s been pretty awesome.
I just realized this is yesterday’s game thread. This is what I get for trying to watch the game and catch up on multiple posts at the same time…
Heh, yep.
Great play by Hannahan.
